Skypiea is very very okay
I keep trying to reread Skypiea, but I can't. Its just too boring and shitty.
Skypiea? More like Sky-peak-a.

It's the last bastion of the type of story Oda was trying to tell (with the sole exception of the Davy Back Fight). It's also the only Grand Line arc where the driving force is adventure, and it's still the only arc that's actually a complete story after almost thirty fucking years! Shit's great, the weakest characters are Hotori and Kotori and they still fulfill their narrative roles really well. Everything gets tied up with a neat little bow and catharsis abounds for every non-antagonist introduced.

I feel like Buggy will die being named 2nd, but the shortest lived King of the Pirates. Then in the Epilogue it’ll be revealed he lived.

He’s a joke character, but he’s literally the first major antagonist. He’s going to have a big damn hero moment.

Man, Big Mom gets more fucked up the more you think about her. Makes your typical BPD/NPD ho look more stable.

Skypiea is very very okay. It's lore is talked up to great praises but how it's presented and the characters with it, felt it could have been written more interesting.
Skypiea's in that weird realm now because of Nika. It's tough to reread because you're trying to see how hard Goda was foreskinning way back when (God help you if you were spoiled). It all takes away from the location, its beauty and worldbuilding, and comedy that the arc showcases when you read it for the first time.

I love that "torturer" is a legitimate pirate role and Roger wasn't above having that. :story:

Also I'm happy Oda has said he makes the same expressions when he draws them. That's something real artists do, and it's just nice to get that confirmation.

Nika is gay.

Man I wish the arc would have been 80% as good as you are imagining it in your head to be. Like almost fans of skypiea, they overelevate things like the gold and the battle between the civilizations. I remember Bellamy’s crew mates before I remember wyper, Laki and Pagaya.

Luffy’s shadow on the clouds alone elevates it to top-tier among One Piece arcs. But it isn’t singular elements or moments that make it good but that it becomes more than the sum of its parts, an issue endemic to shonen writing that even One Piece has not been immune to. If you don’t get it you don’t get it.

Skypeia is bad because you can cut like 70% of it out and you get the same story. The fucking around on Skypeia and the fight in the woods take up too much time. It sets stuff up. The Merry having a spirit, the old man getting closure that his ancestor wasn’t a liar, and Roger’s crew leaving a message are neat.

It’s a bloated mess. I pray that when Enel comes back as Head-Wigger-In-Charge though. Peak antagonist.

So the Los Angeles Dodgers had a One Piece Night.

An appearance by Emily Rudd (Live Action Nami)

A drone show after the game.

Big Mom is a whole bunch of the most negative female stereotypes rolled into a single character: a womanchild not used to hearing "no"; a washed-up ho who fucked half the Grand Line, yet failed to keep even a single man; a mentally unstable tyrannical granny who abuses her family for the hell of it. And all that multiplied by power of a demigod.

While skypeia definitely feels dragged out at strange parts, I'd say the Luffy vs Enel fight being a great example, the arcs biggest weakness is a lack of good sub-villians. Until Enel shows up all you really have are the 4 priest guys who are all pretty forgettable.

That part was because she does not want to share power. They did not leave her, they were made to stay away.
Wow a woman pushing his kid's father out of the picture in order to maintain control of the children. Crazy stuff like that is how you remember One Piece is fantasy.
