I was right about the message ending.
Also, damn, Luffy Conqueror's Haki'd the Five Elders (or their projections) away.
Finally, that robot flashback was cute.

It wasn't Luffy. Joyboy apparently had the ability to seal his Haki within others (or at least in this case, Emeth, the iron giant.) Emeth had the ability to unseal it to save either himself or someone else in an emergency.

Upon further reflection, @Focken Kiwi and @Kazuma, you are correct. How did I not notice the lines before the Haki unleashing were from the robot?

Nope, it's not his--dammit ninja'd.

Also lol Emeth's words here just makes me think of something a kid would say:

"Aw man, that doesn't sound all that great! What a bummer! :("

But God, that's... that hits hard, man. "You go, I'll stay", essentially. But holy hell, Joy Boy's haki had to have been absolutely terrifying back in the day if even Imu was feeling it. I wonder if others around the world have, too.

I took a closer look at that knot that Emeth is pulling on. It looks like the rope is attached to a straw hat. That hat was probably the vessel for Joyboy's haki.

Seems like my prediction of Vegapunk’s speech being shifted into Whitebeard’s declaration was on the money.

Seeing Coby again was dope, and I think it’s being set up to see him as the new Garp to Luffy’s Roger. Him or Smoker Hope that dynamic isn’t changed because I picked up on it, which means one of Oda’s Japanese readers probably can as well.

Seeing Imu forced down by the Haki blast makes me wonder if Imu’s deal is just “Joy Boy, but…evil” a la Blackbeard’s dynamic with Luffy.

If this ends Egghead, I can’t complain. Also, WSJ is on break next week, so no new chapter next week.

And now it seems Imu has that hat now.

Happy 400 pages.

A real fight between Coby and Luffy as equals would be an amazing start or end to the final battle.

Shit if we are building to Coby vs Luffy being the last big fight I would be chill with that, it would be a good version of Naruto vs Sauske.

I don’t think it’s a final battle thing. At most, it’ll probably a hurdle for Luffy to face before taking on the Gorosei (again) and Imu.

But it would be endgame. My idea of a setup would be that Luffy faces the Marines because he learns the Gorosei are going after Vivi, probably in a repeat of Enies Lobby. And Coby is standing in his way because his job description is “stop pirates from achieving their goals”.

My analysis of this scenario is mainly because Luffy is a dense, simple minded, dimwit, I can’t see how he can be painted as Whitebeard’s proverbial “man carrying the weight of history on his shoulders, who will challenge the world to a fight.”

The problem with your analysis is that Luffy..really isn't that stupid. He is book dumb, but alot of his "dumb" aspects are just him not caring about shit because..it just doesn't matter.

See: Alabasta when Vivi was fucking around about going to see Koza and Luffy called her out on the fact that without taking out Crocodile none of that shit matters.
Or when Big Mom was gonna start shit over Fishman Island not paying it's Tribute he knew that the best way to diffuse it was to give up his giant pile of food.
And the time where he treated Momo like an adult when everyone else including Kinemon was ignoring him.

Luffy bearing the Weight of History on his Shoulders will be entirely reliant on if Luffy gives a shit about that history. All that history might not matter to him, but Imu going after Vivi will..which Imu will do because of whatever History is going on with the Cobra family and Imu, do remember when Kinemon asked Luffy to carry Wano on his shoulders Luffy instantly said yes.

I guess that’s a better way to put it, but we seem to agree on the same thing: whatever big, grand defining moment folks like Whitebeard and the Gorosei think will happen to change the world…is happening because some guy is trying to help somebody he likes. Or somebody who gave him food.

You say that “Luffy carrying the weight of history on his shoulders will only matter if he gives a shit about that history”. And I say that Marineford, something mentioned as “going down in the pages of history”, only went the way it did because Luffy was like “Ace is in trouble! I have to save him!” Or when Zoro declared he’d never lose again, he went “Is that okay, king of the pirates?!”, and Luffy just smiles and says yes like Zoro just asked him if he wanted a beer. (Also, IIRC, they made that whole thing more dramatic in the live action series to make Luffy realize that being a pirate isn’t all fun and games, which is also why they revealed the Luffy and Garp relationship so damn early).

When I call Luffy a dense simple minded dimwit, I’m not saying he’s so stupid he has to be told not to eat Elmer’s glue. What I AM saying is that any great changes that happen to the world, including what can happen surrounding The One Piece, is in spite of Luffy’s motivations to do what he does, not because of them. Most of the time.

Also, I still believe the reason the WG and the Gorosei are so focused on Luffy is because they see him as an agent of chaos that’s destroying the delicate balance that they’ve worked for ages to maintain.

What a treat of a chapter

This page went so hard

Aside from that, our first "look" at Joyboy. I'm also wondering how the Gorosei work, I assume the "devil summon" was dispelled by the haki blast which is why all of them got sent back to base except for Saturn who was physically there. I'm also wondering if there is a range limit to the devil summon since bird man was clearly chilling for a while in base. Also, did we ever get any confirmation about how they deal with water? I'm pretty sure they don't give a shit but we haven't seen any clear cut confirmation, right?

I think the devil summon/projection and the constant regeneration are Imu's power.
You know, that makes a lot of sense. The treasure of Mary Geoise is probably the means to use that power or how the Gorosei pick their specific forms. And The One Piece is something to counter those forms. And altogether, they make the original Devil Fruits (or their prototype).

The "funny story" is Joy Boy explaining how he got that method of transformation (or whatever the treasure is) to Laugh Tale and out of the clutches of the World Government.

‘Ages and ages I hope I don’t get lonely.
Don’t worry that won’t be forever’

Yet again more things indicate to me that Imu was Joy Boy and got his mind and body swapped or something. Or Joy Boy failed Imu so hard that he’s hated them forever.

So you’ve essentialy got someone stuck in a castle that can’t die and can’t leave, whose likely only company may be shadow beings of their own creation.

That could make one very loney.

Or perhaps his crew failed him, he ‘died’ and then his friends making him immortal has just made him twisted. And Imu just snapped.

Or maybe he is just a big Kaido and is doing all of this because someone told him that if he did Joy Boy would return.

Regardless all these flashbacks and what we are learning will lead back to Imu directly.

Hope you’re ready to wait for a while. Also, I don’t think Imu is meant to be the most sympathetic person in the world. Maybe not as bad as Blackbeard, but an Imu death will most likely elicit reactions of “Press S to spit on grave”.

I’m not saying Imu will be sympathetic. I’m saying who Imu was before all this seems like they are being set up to be. Oda is very much ‘it makes sense why you are the way you are but that does not excuse or forgive that’

Orochi was completely justified in everything he did, he wasn’t forgiven.

Also remember, Enel got to live his dream and sail off into the sunset.

And Kaido got his memorable defeat

At worst Imu might be set up to almost get that and then be subverted by Blackbeard.
