I still want to know what derangement that group of people had. "It would be cool if I could shrink other people and put them inside my body!"
Maybe that was never the original idea that sparked the birth of that particular fruit. Remember, even Luffy wasn't using his Devil Fruit "correctly," but who is to say how each fruit should be used? The power of each fruit is supposed to be determined by the creativity of the user.

That would actually be kind of great, the fruits gain new powers..purely based on the user thinking "Hey people live in a castle so I should be able to make people live inside of me if i am a castle human"

Law : "I am going to remove hearts of two people and trade them around, this will make them switch bodies"
Ope Ope Fruit: "I'll allow it"

I think the fruit powers are more stemmed from a rough idea/desire rather than a specific description of the powers. As an earlier poster already said the coat one stemming from a desire to help someone else makes a very One Piece apt backstory. In the case of Bege if you saw it from his perspective his fruit stems from the mindset of someone who both is the fortress that secures his followers and is also defended by those same followers so the fruit provides the capacity for them to fortify him through those same powers. It makes him into a literal bastion for his organisation rather than merely a figurative one as the leader.

I think the reason why Luffy's fruit is a bit of an odder one is it doesn't stem from one particular desire but more an overall wish for freedom. It's a devil fruit that has a more loosely defined objective.

In contrast Blackbeard's might be a fruit whose desire is to crush the desires of others, hence why it's both vulnerable to devil fruits and strong against them. It has to be a fruit that is willing to take everything from others so damage is exaggerated but in turn it can therefore nullify at the same time.

Of course it's worth noting that even Vegapunk admits that this whole thing is just a theory.

Oh, and Mole Pistol is an awesome move.

Really hitting me hard that the reveal that Devil Fruits are the collective wishes of people means Gol D. Roger becoming Pirate King was such a fucking badass move. And this possibly also means that all of his badass quotes about dreams and the strong desire for freedom strewn about the series are all post-clarity after he had found Laugh Tale.

Perhaps that is why he laughed.

Alright since we're sharing theories a bit.
I think Roger wasn't laughing because it was funny I think he was laughing from a very sad story. My evidence is what Bluejam says.

Now who is Bluejam telling this to? Roger's son Ace. I don't think that was coincidental. I think Roger learned the true story of the world and he realized he couldn't do anything to fix things and so he began to laugh. Plus it would be off for a One Piece flashback to be happy. What's going to be different though from Roger is that when Luffy sees it, he won't laugh. It will be the day Luffy doesn't smile and sets his sight to fight the World Government, or free the world, or honor Joyboy or something.

I kind of agree with this.

I think Gol Laughed because he got to the last island and couldn't do anything with the information because he was already dying. Him turning himself in and announcing that One Piece exists was his way of continuing the fight by making sure that the World Government couldn't erase the last island again.

I'm still inclined to believe that all DFs are sentient spirits or parts of spirits that were believed into existence as guardian deities hence why all dfs have wills of their own and why both Luffy and Lucci have the same flaming hair and smokey magical ribbon around their shoulders when fully awakened. Them being trapped in DFs could still be explained as being caused by the ancient kingdom's science to keep these spirits from causing havoc.

Had a thought.

We all know Luffy wants to be free and inhereted JoyBoy’s will.

And I realised something.

Because Luffy wants to be free and not tied down every major arc where he saves a place ends with someone else taking the credit, usually because they have no choice or out of friendship.

I think Imu might be in the position they are in specifically because JoyBoy, or at least the Nika Fruit, did not want it.

I think rither they took up the role JoyBoy did not want or they were JoyBoy and gave up the fruit.

I picked this up a while back and still chugging through (just torrented the first third of S6).

With the manga on its last stretch, I just hope I don't get too invested for some bullshit finale that makes the entire story pointless.

I don't think it will, most of the major reveals have been

"Wait what? That...actually makes sense even if it is kind of insane"
