  • And we finally learn what Devil Fruits really are, literally dreams and wishes like The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen (Trilogy of Imagination) or MtG's Theros setting and some other shit that's not coming to mind right now because the world is a fantastical place according to Vegapunk as anything that gets wished for can exist someday, hence why I guess Usopp's lies keep coming true. Although Nika is a special being because even though he's been forgotten and his name was erased from history, he will keep coming back as long as the world needs him or something.

Why they take the forms of fruit instead of actual beings is anyone's guess. But I guess all of this harkens back to a line from way back at the start of the Skypeia arc.

My biggest takeaway from the spoilers is that

Kizaru is heading to Egghead, which means Luffy may get his first chance to fight a Logia user with the Haki he developed in the new world. If Kizaru is defeated by Luffy, shit is gonna get real.
 
I can't fucking believe I am saying it but The Devil Fruits kind of make sense

Okay so we have Haki, where a single person's will can influence the world around them so we know that pure Will and Ambition can manifest itself. Devil Fruits are akin to that but it is a collective will that manifests itself as the Fruit.
 
But now the question is how did the collective will get collected into all of these Devil Fruits? Does this mean they can still be created if you wish upon a star hard enough, or is there a reason why SMILE had to start making artificial Devil Fruits because the technology/ability was lost in the Void Century?

And does this also mean that Devil Fruits kinda actually choose their host because the host has/had dreams it can make come true?

Luffy vs Kizaru is going to end with Luffy unleashing the Gomu Gomu Reflect thing at the speed of light kick.

I think it was mentioned before that devil fruits, or at least zoans, have wills of their own, so they probably do pick those who would want those abilities the most or those who the fruit might see as beneficial to their own desires, like Nika and Luffy. It would also explain why Alabasta and Wano both conveniently had a large number of fruits specifically centered around their native animals and cultural themes show up there since the people there would most want such island-specific powers. Although DFs seeking those who might most want their powers probably isn't universal as seen with Kaku and a few others.

As for why they only appear as fruits, considering Lucci's awakened form looks like Nika and Sengoku's is a daibutsu, maybe all devil fruits were also spirits like Nika who were just sealed into fruit forms to stop them from causing damage by someone or the sea itself. Even though the new OP movie isn't canon, Tot Musica's connection to Uta's fruit feels like it fits with this a bit and Daifuku also makes a good case for it not being exclusive to zoans too since his devil fruit is a paramecia that gives him a spirit. Considering the sea seems to have a will of its own, the sea/Powers that Be is probably the reason why these wishes are stuck as fruits, like if a strong enough wish/spirit is too unnatural it just gets confined to a fruit form to keep it from upsetting the balance of nature, while less crazy wishes like Usopp's stories and other less crazy dreams still exist without being limited to devil fruits because they wouldn't upset nature too much, either that or Usopp had future-seeing haki. I guess we'll see if the author makes good use of this explanation later on.

You laugh now, but wait until Oda writes a three chapter flashback where two orphan children are slowly freezing to death on the streets of a winter island. The older child wishes he could provide warmth for his younger brother during one particularly cold night and thus the coat-coat fruit is born.

Maybe the Devil Fruit powers are "Monkey's Paw" wishes and not just wishes taken at face value. Also, I think it's fitting CP0 is back for this arc just because Kaku loves giraffes.
