I still wonder if this is leading to Momo dealing with some sort of crisis in the near future, especially considering his stated intent to keep Wano closed, however temporarily, and basically return to the status quo from 40 years prior. A major point in the Oden flashback is that Wano’s keeps out not only enemies, but allies as well. Oden didn’t get news about Wano being in crisis when he was out at sea, Wano gets no news at all, his retainers and father in Wano couldn’t contact him, and Wano had no outside contacts to reach out to when Kaido arrived. If Momo’s intends to keep Wano closed, would that also mean cutting ties with most of the alliance that helped him get to this point when they all inevitably leave? Or would this be a half-assed sort of closed where Momo gets to keep in touch with Luffy while the rest of the nation has to stay isolated?

Hell, what about Yamato? She gave a whole speech about liberating Wano by opening the country and unleashing the samurai upon the world, and that she’d disgrace Oden’s name if she didn’t. Is she really going to be content leaving Wano that way, thus proving Kaido right when he said she‘d never open Wano, just because at least she might still get a chance to leave?

Like I said, considering the importance of taking risks is a major theme of Wano, Momo’s choice feels a little against the grain.
As of now, it's a pretty big fucking risk to open Wano's borders, not least because everyone just escaped a fight with two of the Four Emperors alive and is too tired to fight, and the ones not part of that battle are explicit noncombatants.

There's still the matter of the World Government ships heading to Wano to annex it (and they're no doubt doubling down on it, whether by intel from CP0 or seeing Kaido and Big Mom's bodies splash in front of them). Failure however it may happen will probably cause the WG higher-ups to become a wee bit unhinged.

There's also the chaos happening in the world right now:
-The Seven Warlords of the Sea have been disbanded and the Navy sicced something after them, something they were confident enough would replace them while tilting the balance of power in their favor.
-The World Government may/may not have fucked up Alabasta or its heads of state, at the orders of the secret ruler of the world.
-The Revolutionaries' top brass are at large and their leader has no idea what is up
-Blackbeard is on the loose and we still don't know if his raid on Baltigo succeeded; it sent Dragon and his group packing but the reason they even went was to loot their cache of weapons.

Oh, and since Wano's about to close we're about to get that "good idea" of what the One Piece is. The Final War is literally on the horizon.

Agreed, the fact that she is explicitly referring to herself as “Kozuki Oden” feels like there’s still a lot of unresolved baggage there regardless which way that pendulum ends up swinging.

Though slight correction: Luffy doesn’t say he won’t have an Oden on the crew; Yamato says something like “Speaking as Oden, the proper logic dictates that you being Ace’s brother means that I should join you” and Luffy cuts her off to say that it’s fucked up of her to run around LARPing as a nation’s dead hero - especially when there are people who knew and loved the original. So he never actually comments on her wanting to join, and it’s hard to tell what Luffy’s opinion on the matter is between the lack of interactions they have and Luffy giving her a nickname similar to Law or Bartolmeo.

I’m also wondering if Luffy (or Zoro) is even conscious for this. I would hope not just because it’d be rather disappointing, and would diminish the Kaido fight if Oda just hand-waves all those references about it taking a toll on Luffy to just say he’s fine now. I’ve also noticed that Yamato in my re-reads that she’ll tell people she’s joining Luffy when Luffy isn’t around to actually speak for himself, so if that’s the case here as well then I’m sensing a pattern.

I’m more interested in the developments with Momo. Momo giving a whole speech that ends with him declaring that he’ll be the greatest shogun ever just screams “something is about to go wrong.”
Imagine if Luffy finally wakes up on the Sunny and eventually double-takes at seeing her on the ship.

Me and my friends were debating a few days ago about the possibility of Yamato joining as a crew. Two of his points were her position on the ship, and her goal. The first point aside, with Yamato still claiming she is Oden, that might be used for her character development as a crew....that said I really hope Yamato join the crew, don't give me false hope Oda

She is literally a contrast to Luffy and their relationship is a parallel to Roger and Oden.
Yamato = self proclaimed Oden
Luffy = given name Joyboy
While Luffy wont accept that name. Yamato is obsessed by it.
Her dad is Kaido who can turn into a Dragon.
Luffy's father is a guy actually named Dragon.
They both mythical Zoan users.
They both like adventure.
They both inherited wills of past characters Roger/Oden. It's a rehearsal, all over again. I can see from a mile Oda pulling up next chapter:
>Yamato: I'm Oden!! I'm gonna join you!
>Luffy: no, you are not gonna join like this
>Yamato runs off, flashback, development and end of Yamato-Oden-Kaido act. Break next week.
>new chapter, third page in: "now that you are Yamato, you can join us!" says Luffy.

Classic Oda and usual one piece.

I want Yamato to join, but she needs to start being Yamato, not Oden. The majority of the Arc was the denial of the true self for better or worse. Momo wouldn't be tortured if he denied his name.

That was kind of my point though: in an arc where the big players who were playing things the safest, particularly on the antagonis’s side, are the ones that have also been getting fucked over the hardest (Orochi, Basil Hawkins, CP0, arguably X Drake, etc.) and every other instance of choosing to avoid any risk has been consistently framed as something to avoid - particularly in Momo’s arc - it strikes me as incredibly odd that the single most important decision in the entire arc that’s been given 200+ chapters of buildup, and is the central linchpin to at least 10 other characters’ arcs, would be the one exemption in this story.

The World Government’s intentions to annex Wano could potentially serve as a stress test for both Momo as a freshly minted shogun and Wano‘s continued closure. Again, it’s been mentioned multiple times throughout the arc that Wano being closed means that they have no allies to depend on, and being closed wasn’t actually an obstacle when enemies like Kaido were dead set on taking over. It raises the question if they’re even capable of maintaining their independence and a closed nation when they needed so much outside help to fix things.

I think what really hurts Yamato’s characterization in regards to mimicking Oden is how narrow the scope of her interest has been framed so far. Every scene with her in regards to showcasing what she admires most about Oden has only been about the future of Wano he outlined in his journals. In the flashback between Yamato and the surviving daimyo, Yamato says that the reason behind her desire to sail out to sea is so she can come back to Wano stronger for the war in 20 years that she read about. When she bonds with Ace, she’s shown asking him about the new up and coming pirates because Oden described the rise of a powerful new generation coming to the new world and figure out if any were the Joy Boy Oden was waiting for; but she doesn’t ask about any of the places Oden described or any of Ace’s own adventures, seemingly because those things aren’t related to the journal’s predictions. There’s also an interesting contrast between Yamato and Oden in the most recent chapter: while Oden was shown to approach things that were strange and different with enthusiastic interest similar to Luffy, Yamato‘s approach is to awkwardly point out the Straw Hat’s oddness, almost as though she‘s a little put off by their strangeness. The contrast is likely intentional, but I think it also highlights how Yamato’s desire for nondescript adventures falls flat for some people when she doesn’t appear to have internalized any of the reasons why Oden wanted adventure.

So some autistic thinking about things.

There being 11 Strawhats makes sense, I watched the scene of Rodger Finding Laugh Tale again (and double checked the manga version too) and including himself, The Official Rodger crew is 10 + Oden (who Gol stated he was Borrowing From Whitebeard Originally) so The Straw Hats ending at 10 + Yamato(Oden) and I think that Yamato being a crew member and having the chance to develop as a character may be a good counter weight to Jinbe who will ultimately not need character development.

As for Yamato's motivations, I kind of think they fit within one of the major themes of the setting. Inherited (not by Family or Destiny, but influence Generation to Generation. Luffy isn't some destined one brought forth by fate...he is just carrying on the torch that Gol threw down and he seems to be doing it for the purist of reasons, he awakened Joy Boy Powers not because he is born special but because he is too stupid and autistic to give a shit about anything except that.

Yamato also has a similar if much stranger line of will. Yamato's line of Inheritance goes through Whitebeard(who Called Oden Brother) to Ace to Her, She isn't Oden because she thinks she is Oden..she is Oden because she is the White Beard Pirate that will tag along and because Momo will be too busy to really be active until the actual final conflict (when everyone shows up to support Luffy)

If Yamato sticks around I imagine she will get some Oden-like moments where she goes nuts over some shit she couldn't have imagined existing and realizing that the world is bigger than what the journal covers, also I am starting to Unironically think Yamato gets to beat the shit out of Sakazuki while Sabo fights Fujitora, he was the one who killed Ace and if Yamato is carrying Ace's will her getting that fight is more appropriate...minus Luffy of course.

In that case I think we get Sabo vs Fujitora in the final conflict, that pair having a fight over their conflicting ideals and the concept of Saftey at the expense of Freedom vs the Idea of Freedom at the expense of safety would be a good place for them to end up.

Also funny note about that whole inherited will thing, You know how..Usopp is used as a foreshadowing device fairly often? What did..the little kids he played with do when he left?

They continued his wolf calls about pirates, because Usopp inspired the next Generation. This Manga is going to be very interesting to reread after the end to see exactly how much shit we missed catching as important.

NOW GIMME THOSE SWEET PUZZLE PIECES YOU NAVY DOGS.

The official crew had at least 28 members (Oda sketched the most important ones and showed them off in the Volume 96 SBS) and there were more than 10 in the entire part of the flashback where he traveled with Roger.
The only way Yamato can develop as a character is if she cuts her shit, and not just with the Oden RPing. She's also saying she's joining the crew while both its captain and his number two are out for the count, so they can't voice their opinion on the matter.

As for Yamato's motivations, I kind of think they fit within one of the major themes of the setting. Inherited (not by Family or Destiny, but influence Generation to Generation. She didn't really inherit any will though. She spent most of her life on an island outside of Wano mainland training and dreaming, never breaking free of her restraints even when it was later revealed that she always had the power to do so. She only started acting like she was Oden because she was shocked by what Shinobu revealed about him at his execution and by how he conducted himself but she never did anything that actually emulated his dreams or intentions. (Dalton wanted to save Drum Island because he was inspired to rebel by Dr. Hiriluk's arrival at an obvious trap due to fearing the worst, Iceburg united all the shipwrights into the Galley-La Company and outlined plans that would enable Water 7 survive no matter what because that was the purpose for which Tom constructed the Sea Train, Sabo was an amnesiac parallel to Ace, who thought the entire world his enemy because it represented "the opposite of freedom" that had killed Sabo to begin with,)

Yamato, in spite of being trapped her entire life in one place as Oden felt he did, doesn't seem to want to leave so that she can feel freedom beyond where she's allowed to go, because she's unsatisfied with how things are done and always have been done in her homeland, but because she only wants to do so because that's what someone else did.
Yamato has no line to Whitebeard whatsoever. When she met Ace, he was still leader of the Spade Pirates, and out for Whitebeard's head. They didn't assimilate until long after leaving Wano. (She technically didn't even exist when this was all established. Izo and Marco have a stronger argument for being here if this happens.)

She probably already knows the world contains more than what's in Oden's logbook, given that when she met Ace, he launched an offensive against the Animal Kingdom Pirates only to learn (from her) that the top brass were on a big expedition. She could probably figure out for herself what was going on whether or not the rank and file talked to her or around her.
In that case I think we get Sabo vs Fujitora in the final conflict, that pair having a fight over their conflicting ideals and the concept of Saftey at the expense of Freedom vs the Idea of Freedom at the expense of safety would be a good place for them to end up.
Sabo & Fujitora already fought in Dressrosa though, and there isn't anything else for them to debate; Fujitora's whole thing was his belief that the WG had no business dictating how one of their countries conducted themselves (after being freed by subjugation by a Warlord of the Sea, his argument with Akainu) and Sabo mostly fought him to keep him of Luffy's back during his fight with Doflamingo. Their ideals don't really seem to come in conflict with one another (unless Sabo turns out to be a psycho obsessed with removing the power no matter the cost, but that's unlikely to be a thing.)
Also funny note about that whole inherited will thing, You know how..Usopp is used as a foreshadowing device fairly often? What did..the little kids he played with do when he left?
they got molested by Merry the goat butler for 2 years

That shit only caught on because the villagers themselves wondered what the fuck was up when Usopp wasn't around-- his antics turned out to be part of their daily routine, he was just some part of their world they got used to.

God Tama's quick little sad flashback to selling hats hits hard with her eyes trying to hold tears when no one buys her hats, and chibi Komachiyo ❤️ .

It's a credit to Oda how consistently he makes the boys be these brash little punks who are annoying but you like because you were the same, and the girls all have these sad stories where dad protecc mode goes into overdrive.

New Dub episodes are out :3 This time we get up to Luffy defeating Cracker.

Oh and by the way, this is off topic, but I just ordered for my birthday a Blu Ray set from Brazil “Choujinki Metalder”, because I absolutely have to write this off my bucket list soon. I am mentioning this because this Japanese Drama makes me cry so hard and I love the lore and Japanese themes used. But for One Piece? I need that shit in English.

Tokusatsu in Japanese audio and subtitles is one thing. So much of the Drama is told in action. And while that’s still true in One Piece, it’s not as easy for me to relate to animated characters speaking in a foreign language.

That said, 1052 Spoilers have been out for about 12 hours

Enter Green Bull

RIP Ashura and Izou :(

Figured they died fighting, they felled in such gruesome ways that it's why they never showed up at the end to welcome in Momonosuke. Characters were going to die, that it's them may have been up to chance. I was coming to like Ashura, so that's a shame.

That said, about time we see Green Bull. Maybe he has a kickass design.

I just started watching one piece and this Crocodile guy sure is strong!
