Also helps further vindicate my feelings on Skypeia being an amazing arc from the get-go when I first saw it. Bet Skypeia haters feel pretty silly for thinking it sucks now.

Logging this here that I have introduced One Piece to my fiancé. Said he's enjoying it so far (four episodes) even with the weird quips he was making, and is willing to watch every day.

This'll also be my first time rewatching the series from the beginning. Gonna be fun to look back on these earlier arcs with the knowledge we have now of the lore.

PT-BR translator for the latest chapter wrote a whole article on the latest chapter's translation, and he had a lot to bring up, but this one part in particular should be pointed out.

According to Shurtz (quote from the article): "Rubber Hose cartoons exist both literally and figuratively in a "plastic" world. This means that the style can create and be anything that can potentially be molded and take shape" (our emphasis) - which is EXACTLY the powers of Luffy's new gear.

Basically this is what the awakened Nika fruit does: anything he touches can be 'plastified' to be shaken, stretched, or molded. I can see one of his new attacks squish someone like Wile E. being flattened by an ACME anvil.

I'm fucking crossing my fingers that Luffy rubber-fies Kaido's club, causing a Tom & Jerry moment where Kaido smacks himself in the face with his own CoC charged attack.
 
Retconning the Gum-gum fruit into a mythical Human-human fruit just seems kinda wierd to me, when (with what’s been revealed so far) the concept totally works if kept as a paramecia. It’s a very meta take on what a “world of rubber” would look like, and given that we haven’t seen many awakened Devil Fruits it woudlnt be too inconsistent for this one seemingly insignificant fruit to have these basically reality-warping powers - for all we know, ANY mundane Devil Fruit can reach a similar power level when awakened.

And just in general, I think it’s more interesting if the Gum Gum fruit literally IS just some random-ass fruit that’s special not for what it is, but for how it’s been used in the past, and by whom. It’s like whoever said above, it’s cool how Luffy was able to make use of a relatively shitty power by coming up with creative applications. Making it a super special fruit all along feels like it kinda takes away from that.
 
My theory on Laugh Tale and why Roger and his crew laughed.

Roger was supposed to be the Joy Boy of his era. Unfortunately, maybe because Roger was like Luffy, and he was a stubborn moron who thought he didn't need no DF, never sought out the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika. In turn, the fruit, because it has such a volatile and cartoonish will, thought it'd be funny to troll Roger, and because it was 'too early'. He arrived at the island, and when he read that he actually needed the fruit, he and his crew realized they were punked for the entire way. All the work, the blood and sweat they spilled, the places they've been to, the friends and enemies they made, only to find out their journey amounted to nothing.

He took it in stride, and it inspired him along with Oden to make preparations to ensure that the next Joy Boy comes. He might have ordered Shanks to find the fruit, but we can't be too sure about that since the fruit might have let itself be found when Shanks stole it from Who's Who. It's because the fruit was with the very last people it wanted to be.

Even the way Luffy ate the fruit 'by accident' makes it funny since Shanks thought he'd have to find the actual Joy Boy, only for this kid in some podunk town to eat the fruit he spent years searching for.

I don't think puppet master bullshit fits the aforementioned characters or the tone of One Piece's story.
