I'm torn, on one hand it's a bit of an asspull but on the other it's the One Piece setting. Luffy being able to break it into being even more cartoonlike than it already was is not that much of a change.

Literally just hit me today and I think this is something worth keeping in mind as the fanbase processes this.

I think this is this generation of Shonen Jump's "Goku is an alien" bomb drop. Which is sad because then newcomers will already know the twist, but it may hopefully make the journey that much more fun.

I haven't seen this theory anywhere yet but it can explain that Oda always planned for something like this since Wano was planned from the beginning.

Luffy's new power may be based on Kamishibai , people who would go around during the depression/post WW2 and tell stories with papercraft characters. There were a lot of orphans who would enjoy the stories (Tama, Momo, Toko for examples) and they would even give out or sell candy.
Apparently after WW2[ the cartoons were more western inspired by disney and looney tunes.
Also, I remember hearing that the story of Momotaro was one of the more popular ones told.

Ever since I saw Gear 2 from its inception, I always considered it to be the Kaioken for Luffy. I thought Gear 4 would be the Super Saiyan, but I was wrong, it was the Oozaru equivalent. THIS is the Super Saiyan form!
Also in the biggest sense of meta irony, because a WHITE SUIT LOOKING CP0 that inconspicuous look like Frieza tried to kill Luffy, Luffy got a new form not by anger but by laughter.

My only issue with Nika Luffy is how he comically pulled up the ground to bounce Kaido's fireball back. I'm totally fine with Luffy being even more of a joke, it's fitting and it's a good message with a smile and laugh changing the world more than anything else, but it starts to feel less Oda planned and more Western Bugs Bunny plot power.

This isn't new to Luffy, but with Doflamingo's everything is string awakening it felt more like Oda wanted to ramp up his level of scary. Plus awakening in general is one of the more obvious things in the whole series where it doesn't feel like Oda actually planned for it and got blindsided.

/a/ has been having an autistic shitfit over Luffy's awakening. I think the power of the awakening perfectly suits his character. My only complaint with the twist is how weird and sudden Luffy being a mythical zoan is. Naive goofball who has always fought in a sillyway, all the way back to when he would use his innovative and ridiculous ways to deal with situations, like how he swallowed a bunch of water to fight crocodile. Some anons are autistically comparing it to AoT's ending. With Luffy being the Joyboy, I wonder if the butthurt in a portion of the fandom is part of the "smiles" that Nika brings :^)

The enlightenment thing was a joke to cover for the fact the normal Human-Human Fruit has no effect (besides no swimming) if a human eats it.
I think the other forms are a possibility, but we'll have to see if they appear.

A thought occurs there. What if "enlightenment" is Oda talking about the Voice Of All? We haven't yet got an explanation for why Luffy has that and while it might be a standard unexplained superpower it might be an explanation.

Alternatively enlightenment might link more into the fact that Luffy has a more flexible version of what Chopper does with the Rumble ball. He doesn't have fixed forms he creates them himself occasionally on the fly.

And the idea that the same power he has also makes him subject to cartoon slapstick seems entirely plausible.

I don't think it'd be the only way of gaining it. But Oda being the troll he can be at times making that be the reason why Luffy can use it after the enlightenment comment seems like the sort of thing he might do.

Everything with Blackbeard at this point it's usually fair to assume it's part of a plan rather than random. He might have been after Wapol given the guy's devil fruit. Between some of the stuff we've seen of how Big Mom got her fruit and Blackbeard and his crew claimed others I think it's possible to steal devil fruits by eating part of the user's body or possibly digging the fruit out of them to eat. If so Wapol's fruit might have had some added uses for Blackbeard's crew.
