I just wonder how affordable a show like this is long-term. Since its still the early area of One Piece, there's only a few ships, and a few characters etc compared to say, the arc with Ace's excecution, and all the ships and many, many pirate crews, along with all the navy ships. They go on about how they have actually built the ships for this series, but I highly doubt that is affordable down the line. The CGI budget alone would skyrocket once reach the more fantastical places and characters (and I still wonder how they will portray Chopper that won't look like some absolute nightmare fuel).

Imagine how expensive the CGI would be for Logias..or Katakuri..or Gear 5.

Looking at what they did to Merry if I thought they would get to Chopper I might never sleep again.

As it is I will doze like a baby until 00:00 when I will sit bolt upright, sob blood and scream "the devourer has come!" Assuming the live action will go on as soon as 31/08 arrives.

I can at least respect their mindset, especially compared to other adaptations.

It's the tone they're going for. You can almost hear in a lot of what's shown in the trailers someone muttering, "we're dark, we're gritty, we're serious."

That’s good. Everything I’ve seen of the guy makes it look like he’s a huge Luffy fan, so it’s good to hear he pulls it off so well.
 
Beginning a very slow initial watch.

Execution scene. Weird touch I noticed is not that Mihawk is there, that I'm kind of fine with since the alternative is a flashback showing he was, but that his boat is in the docks. Which either suggests he's kept the same boat for 22 years or he really loves that design.
Some of the oh so Netflix lines (the "mutiny" one seen in the trailer and "oh man, it's my first day" as the boat goes down) grate. The shot of Inaki emptying the barrel out as he is stood over it looked incredibly like Luffy though.
Alvida being fixated on being the most powerful rather than fairest. Dull decision with no real need. One Piece personalities are demented and she is far from the biggest narcissist we will run into.
Ugh. Don't like the Koby stuff. He's lacking in his own initiative and given the Alvida stuff was meant to be him finding his backbone and deciding to pursue his dream. In this he's basically being hauled along by Luffy. I do wonder if they're planning more for him based on stuff later but it's an iffy start.
Decent Zorro and Nami into, not hating the moment all three are finally in a bar together since some of the stuff at the Marine base in Shells Town is in a different order. Similar set of events and I don't dislike Axe-Hand so far.
Why do we Helmeppo posing naked? This scene feels like someone going "just like Game of Thrones" as they wrote it. For those who care, ass shot only.
Okay, Morgan's sculptures and paintings are pretty on target. Shame the Den-Den-Mushi looks inanimate.
And the flaws of bringing in Nami into the fight scene show. Guess who gets to handle the majority of the Marines while it takes both Luffy and Zorro to handle Axe-Hand.
Garp getting called in at the end of the episode (with an animated Den-Den at least). I'm leery about this since that should be well below him, even if it is a map to the Grand Line.
And a look at Buggy at the end. Of course they're hamming it up like he's the Joker.

Could be worse but they did not even wrap up Luffy's flasback in this episode while speed-running Shell Town

Buggy's crew are randomly capturing people then dicking with them. Kind of in character especially the imprisoning of the townfolk as a captive audience but Buggy mincing in as a prima donna was a bit jarring. Not a terrible Buggy, very different though and not what I wanted. Japanese sub improves it a lot.
No lion. No dog. Screw you Netflix.
Buggy keeps calling his crew freaks, tying into the stupid "outcast" theme they're trying to do this episode.
Zorro's starting to turn into a paper tiger. Gets dragged off by a pair of Buggy's underlings like a standard issue victim after trying to threaten the clown's crew with his reputation. Not even throwing a punch seems fairly pathetic.
Attempting to torture Luffy using a rack. Sure. At least he makes it clear it isn't painful but still. I give credit that making the town mayor twist the rack rather than see one his constituents go on is a nice touch.
Buggy ranting about Shanks but no flashbacks.
Revel of Buggy's power is Luffy punching his head off. Not bad. But like with stretching powers the live action does not get even close to the effects animation can do.
Apparently Zoro killed Cabaji's brother. Not really relevant since Cabaji tortures him a little then Nami saves Zoro by kicking Cabaji into his reach
Whiel all of this is going on Garp and Coby's stuff is slowly proceeding. Coby's enlisted in Morgan's service (fuck's sake) but Garp swiftly picks up that Morgan is an issue. Garp interrogates Coby and finds out a bit more of the truth about the new recruit's backstory.
A bit more of Luffy's flashback, namely the bandits returning for their ass kicking.
Buggy's shoved Luffy in a slowly filling tank of seawater. For some reason he tries to claim Luffy's crew have abandoned him which makes zero sense since they're captives just like him and he knows that. Buggy losing his patience and hurting himself punching the tank is a very Buggy like reaction, immediately followed by more of the "join me, you're an outcast" nonsense.
Luffy flashback again, Sea King time. Not an awful effect but Shank's dismissal of it is fairly underwhelming. I think the biggest issue is it goes from Shanks to the Sea King then back to young Luffy for some reason before it retreats. The shot of the child was unneeded.
Zoro and Nami beat the clown crew entirely off screen and come to save Luffy.
At this point I'm starting to get a bad feeling because while Cabaji has become irrelevant Buggy fights all three of the main cast so far on his own. It's not a bad fight scene but it's the same thing as Morgan and it kind of feels off. Oh and remember how Nami had the idea to tie down Buggy's body parts in the manga? In this it's nearby crates they use and it's Luffy's idea. Also the profanity is creepy up and it's starting to feel childish.
We get mini Buggy. It's not as good.
Oh and Zorro would have left the entire town shackled up and left. Which is kind of not his character. He's a dick but even last episode of this show he's not that callous.
Harp gives a little speech after revealing the captive Morgan. It's iffy, I could see manga Garp explaining how they need to crush the dreams of pirates to properly but that's mostly a speech he'd give because the Marines needed to hear it rather than something that feels like him. It's not terrible but it does feel a bit off.
Shanks passing the hat in the flashback. In the present Nami fixes that hat after Buggy damages it.
Nami has a mini Den-Den Mushi, presumably to get in touch with Arlong.

It did, I worded that wrong and more meant bringing her into that fight. It's still early enough that we have not seen the other two excel in their chosen area and the manga did that in that encounter. As is while I am not counting I think Nami was handling the Marines as easily as Luffy in that scene
 
Finally finished ep 1.
It had to cram together the first 3 arcs together. Overall I say "It works".
A lot of the changes seem to be out of necessity. Some odd choices, to be fair, but it works.

The casting is really good. Like, It's easily the strongest point of the show so far.
Luffy is perfect. Like shit.
Zoro is fine. He does his job.
Nami is probably the most Netflix'd out of the group. More Snarky, but they're letting Nami be...enough of Nami. I'm counting my blessings here. We'll see how she ends up.
Koby got left in the dust in episode 1, unfortunately, but he seems he's gonna be through the season, so we'll see.

Also, Luffy's stretching CG is handled well.
Also again, I'm going through episode 2, Lovin' Buggy.

Netflix's audience doesn't understand nuance. It'll most likely be a jarring 180 after Arlong Park if they don't keep the Netflix stronk wahmens cringe throughout.

I don't know when I'm going to be watching it and I don't want to watch it alone, and my brothers want to check it out but our schedules aren't synced up until Sunday, at the earliest. I'll just have to take everyone else's word for it.
