but do you think the hyper compression means some stuff will be cut entirely or be rewritten? For example if the writing is better than Cowboy Bebop's we might get some nods to cut/offscreen stuff in a line or two of dialogue, just as IYKYK sort of thing?
Oh I 100% think they are gonna cut shit, and 90% sure that they are gonna cut something that is going to end up being super important.

Edit : See that time 4 Kids cut Little Garden..which became important later in Eneis Lobby..and will probably be super important again soon.

Devil's advocate: I don't think 4KIDS knew at the time how important things would get later down the line (don't know if someone researched that enough). Laboon for sure at the time was something no one knew was actually very crucial to a future Straw Hat.

Nowadays, there's no excuse to cut out stuff that has long been proven to be important to the story. Maybe that's one reason why it is Oda needed to be a consultant, it'd help numb the pain.

Holy shit I forgot about the Little Garden fuck-up. At what point did 4kids stop messing up the storyline?

NGL because of that, watching the 4kids was confusing as hell as a kid and part of the reason I didn't get into One Piece until a couple of years ago. Talk about a gaping narrative hole.

On the unaware note: Didn't the anime revamp the "friendly pirates" designs into the Rumbar Pirates once Laboon was revealed to be really important to Brook? I feel like they looked different between the two seasons and the fact they were a ship of musicians didn't get mentioned until Thriller Bark, almost as if they were a throw-away idea to begin with that Oda revisited and fleshed out.

Well it wasn't just Laboon (I actually wasn't completely sure if that got cut) but Broggy and Dory mattering later with the Giant Guard was also a thing that 4Kids would have to write around if they got to that point.

Drum Island, they skipped a bunch because they wanted to get to Chopper faster because Ironically "He is the team pet"

Honestly, the Giants thing wouldn't have been hard to write around:
Oimo/Kashi: THEY HAVE OUR CAPTIANS
Ussop: THEY'RE LYING I LIE A LOT SO I KNOW WHAT IM NOT LYING TO YOU ABOUT
Omio/Hashi: WHY THOSE LIARS

Even the Laboon thing is salvageable-- just introduce him there as an end goal and don't reference the crew meeting him. Like, have Brook be promised passage off Thriller Bark to be able to meet him on the seas again or something.

The real trouble (had 4Kids been able to get to that point) might have been in Sabaody and onwards (at least visually).

Interestingly, this is also where death stopped being jumped around (the references weren't explicit but they were present now).

I think they're going to be relying heavily on the OVA whose name escapes me that concludes at Arlong Park for the Netflix stuff. Which was a shock to the system when I first saw clips from it having only ever seen the original anime as I realised just how much animation had changed a decade or so later.

Episode of East Blue was the title. Basically the abridged 1st saga.

No one knew. The Japanese staff might have been told somethings like 'this dude is really important' but as we see with young Silvers back then looks nothing like he does in his old age. To the point it's really hard to tell they are the same person. 4Kids absolutely would not have been told 'very crucial, don't cut'.

Not to mention it's known that a lot of the cuts and changes to the shows were not down by them, rather the network mandating. Most dubs did it back then.

The biggest reason 4kids went so weird with OP is that they didn’t even want it. Toei was desperate to get it in the west, so they tacked it on with another series (Shaman King, maybe).

It was Ojamajo Doremi. Xebec did Shaman King.

The thing with Brook and Laboon is that it's what really motivates the SH pirates into helping Brook. Up until then he was just a funny skeleton but since Luffy made a promise to Laboon that coincided with Brooks it was then settled that he was joining.
I'm more curious how they would have handled the slave trade, Boas backstory, and Im wiping out civilizations

See: Crocus and the comment he makes at the end of his debut.

The same 4Kids that did all this:
Anime was not on the same level as American made stuff. I think maybe Zatch Bell was the last thing I ever saw where it was done like this.

Even before this they were shopping around and test dubs were made:
And stuck it on 4Kids because of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! (somehow missing that both shows were boosting/boosted by merchandise)

Probably the same way they handled Shanks's arm, Zeff's leg and Bell-mere dying in a dungeon: no way around it so just run with it (and maybe downplay some of the more gruesome parts).
I bet more would've come around on it once they saw 4kids chopping up the filler from the later episodes and speeding up the pacing a bit.

Also this:
Take it with a grain of salt but the claims boil down to "it was Al Kahn and the Jewpanese execs at Toei that bungled errything"

I don't think we'll ever get the full story behind 4KIDS' production of the dub, but Toei had to sign off on everything. They could've refused or said "No, do it this way instead" or whatever (and maybe that did happen), but they decided to approve some really silly shit and look at what happened to One Piece's reputation in the West. It almost killed interest over here.

Toei is overprotective of One Piece now because of what they had personally allowed to happen. The Dragon Ball franchise almost has the same coddling treatment, but DBZ was flexible enough that it could survive anything that happened to it, and there's a lot of fan interest in its bizarre localizations. Sailor Moon and Digimon also, to an extent. I don't know if One Piece could've survived any of that stuff had 4KIDS kept it even six months longer.
