There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

It has always been a private theory of mine that the Norks developed nuclear weapons to deter the Chinese, not America. The US and Worst Korea are both democratic nations, and the Norks have at all times a massive amount of artillery pointed at Seoul to make aggressive action a electoral catastrophe. No plan is even close to guaranteed success even with the great risks, to say nothing of the Nork's strengths in guerrilla warfare and the potential refugee disaster. Nuclear weapons would only encourage the west to seek economic solutions.

The Chinese are different. While so far Best Korea has been an excellent smoke screen for China's maritime adventures, Beijing would prefer a more pliable puppet. They have the capability to destroy Kim's tinpot regime at all times, through trade alone, to say nothing of more devious strategies of regime change impossible in a open society. Only the potential refugee's deterred them; a devastated Seoul is meaningless to an authoritarian regime that can simply purge scapegoats until trade relations normalize, and the Nork's entire defense rests upon an attack from the south. They could even rightfully claim they were trying to dismantle a rogue state.

Suddenly, Rocket Man has nuclear missiles. While they may not be able to reach the U.S, they are more than capable of striking the densely populated Chinese cities. The fallout from a failed regime change turns literal, making even the actual millions of refugee's pouring across the border pale in comparison. Even at the best of times this would be a massive disaster, and China is not a stable country. Not only are revolutions an cultural phenomena, but the Chinese have to dedicate quite a bit of resources to monitoring and quelling the mob of billions connected through mobiles and the internet. Read more on Chinese internet vigilantes if you want to learn more. That energy can easily topple the regime, and they know it. North Korean convention artillery is already focused permanently on Seoul. I would bet big bucks on the hidden missile sites being pointed to the north.
I'd never really thought of this since the Norks have been a crucial puppet to keep NATO off its borders. I highly doubt Un purging Pyongyang of high ranking military and government officials who were close to Beijing went over very well. I was surprised to see them openly speak out against the Norks either earlier this year or last year, I forget. And, this year they actually started complying with trade sanctions whereas before they merely paid them lip service. A regime change to a more compliant partner would be right up the Chinese ally. They seem to be dumping Fatty, that's for sure. It's interesting to ponder.

Nah I still think the nukes are to stave off a Western invasion. Fatboy has seen Gaddafi give up his nukes, and get toppled. Saddam didn't have nukes and got toppled. They're a radioactive security blanket to Pyongyang.

That was their intent, and I still think primary purpose, but I think Un is also watching north after this recent drop in support.

Naturally! The current batch of nukes being made is likely reserved for Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. But I don't think China is target number one. Fatboy has said it's LA (go for San Francisco or Portland you tard!) but until he can show that they could reliably go that distance I actually think he'll hit Tokyo first unless shit has really hit the fan. Then he won't give a fuck about Fallout and what have you, he'll nuke Seoul out of spite.

I always thought that the nukes were to intimidate all their enemies, not just one country or another. To him, not only are they are good deterrent against America and its allies in the South. But also to embarass Xi and his rule given how several of his past tests took place during conferences being held in China.

The only reason he doesn't threaten China more is because they (and Russia and Iran) keep giving them shit like oil, something that'll likely change given the most recent sanctions China and Russia helped to back. And who knows whether Iran has its own ulterior motives for budding up with the Norks or not.

My money is on Guam and/or Okinawa. Okinawa is one of the biggest concentrations of US military outside the US and is basically what is supposed to keep the Status Quo in East Asia.
the most recent sanctions China and Russia helped to back.
While I applaud their actions to finally hit Kimmy with a shitton of sanctions, the cycnic in me assumes that this mainly means they will sell stuff secretly for a hugely inflated price.

I agree. The guns that are supposed to level Seoul were built in the 70's with 50's-60's commie-bloc tech. They are beyond obsolete and they have been there so long everybody knows where they are sited and what their capabilities are.

In the meantime, the ROK (not wanting their capital leveled) has built countermeasures with their beefed up their economic and military capabilities. They have built themselves many first-rate artillery pieces and fire-finder radar systems along with modern AA and ABM tech. The move has been countered.

The Norks cannot credibly threaten to destroy Seoul with conventional weapons anymore. If they had to go to war their Koksan museum pieces would be wiped out by counter-battery fire before they did significant damage and they know it. Because of that they need another way to flop their dick out. The nukes are it.

If they got enough artillery pieces, even one salvo could cause rather horrific civilian casaulities. Especially since I'm sure the Norks have no ethical problems about making hospitals and schools prime targets.

A few salvos before the batteries are silenced is an entirely different animal than shelling with impunity over weeks/months/years until movement on the frontline pushed the cannons away leaving a decimated city.

Shit is different now in a big way.

Kim Jong Un must fear North Korean Resident's Fury : Op Ed
This pretty much sums up a whole lot of why and what Fatty is doing atm. He dragged his fat ass up Mt Baekdu the other day for some reason and he's been busy in the past few days praising the body of his father at Kumsusan.

Something is obviously needling the fat tard, otherwise he wouldn't be waddling around in public so much. I say that his supposed new bombs are infact hollow. Or just don't work. Either or.

Also, don't be shocked to hear that he's installing his sister as "Next Best Kim". There's been lots of noise about her lately taking more and more roles, but as of yet, nothing's been official.

I feel as if he's grooming her to be the next leader of North Korea as soon as he is because something's wrong with him health-wise.

And I don't just mean mentally, either.

I say that his supposed new bombs are infact hollow.
He has them and they generally work. How many and what capacity to deliver them are the questions. Estimates for the number of nukes he has come from the amount of material he can get from the reactors and how often they shut down to extract it and likely switched to refining it. If anybody knows for sure how many actual warheads, that info isn't getting to the public. Either the CIA, or DIA I forget, confirmed that a test warhead from one of the recent launches only broke up upon reentry because of the trajectory. If it had been a warhead on a track to a target, it would have been fine. It's universally agreed that the last nuke test was a hydrogen bomb due to its measured size. The Norks claimed the one before that was as well, but experts believe that only the initial nuke stage went off if it was indeed a thermonuclear device. The first stage of a hydrogen bomb is a traditional nuke. I've read different opinions on whether or not they can miniturize a warhead to put on a missile and the reliability/accuracy of the new longer range systems are questionable. Recent progression, especially in solid fuel design, is happening quickly, but they are still very behind in rocket technology. You won't hear about failed launches on the news.

The problem isn't that their guns are top notch, the problem is that they have several tens of thousands of them.
Also, there hasn't really been a significant improvement in the design of artillery guns since ww2. Sure, there's now fancy new technologies that help with artillery fire like improved targeting, spotting or gadgets like MRSI-capability, but all this stuff is not needed when you just aim at a large metropolis like Seoul, not caring what you're going to hit.

No matter what Seoul can field, their defenses will not be strong or numerous enough to take out these batteries quickly or prevent a significant number of shells from hitting within their capital city.

And said Nork batteries are hidden all across a large mountain area and dug in. So even when the worst Korean army inevitably starts whittling down their numbers, it will take its time.

Also, don't be shocked to hear that he's installing his sister as "Next Best Kim". There's been lots of noise about her lately taking more and more roles, but as of yet, nothing's been official.
So, how long until he uses her as a bullet sponge?
