There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

That headline had me thinking they were shooting at the dude defecting. Which in all honesty is still safer than living in Best Korea.

It's getting bad enough that soon making a run for the border might actually be a little more logical than just sitting and waiting to see what Kim Jong-un is going to do to you next.

The problem isn't about you getting killed trying to escape, it's what happens to the three generations of your family that you leave behind.

They were going to end up dead one way or another.

The total number of North Koreans who directly defected to the South has also risen to 15 this year, compared to five last year, according to official figures reported by Yonhap news agency.

Hundreds more defect through China, before making their way to the South.

It sounds like Rocket boi is doing another Stalinistic purge. Can't have agenda-upsetting mistakes or disgruntlement in the ranks!

That last paragraph explains why China suddenly started building refugee camps.

Because people are now watching?

Normally China sends any refugees it catches back to the North.

There've been a bunch of war novels where the Norks wait until right around Christmas and attack south then. The thinking is that the rice paddies have frozen solid enough for tanks and the Americans in Korea are caught at a lower state of readiness. I don't know how realistic that is now though. I doubt they have the fuel for an armoured attack.

True, but with the amount of defectors this year, and how the South seems to be more accepting of them lately. I'd expect more to keep coming during the next year.

I doubt his army's going to take much more without rebelling against the tubby tyrant.
Stalin did similar antics and all it did was cause no one to come to his aid when he collapsed from a stroke for fear of being accused of causing it.

It takes some mammoth sized balls to openly rebel against someone who could have you erased by artillery at the drop of a hat.

One of the strikes that tubby has going against him is that people know he was never the first choice for successor for Kim Jung Il. Unlike previous dictators, opinion on him was never high to begin with. He's a waddling inferiority complex.
Not just that, but how own father hated him too.

I guess father issues does make a tyrannical dictator.

That's suicide and I imagine most of their brass know it. They are outclassed in everything except numbers.

At best I see some kind of limited engagement border scuffle kind of thing to raise tensions to get the military leadership in line. Like when they sunk the ROKS Cheonan and shelled the shit out of that island in 2010 shortly after Kim Jong-Il rearranged the senior military leaders to pave the way for Fatboy to take charge.

Do you honestly believe the Souks will tolerate another Cheonan?

They are still a rather infantry heavy force, and tanks are rather easy to target from the air. I'm not sure that the Norks would go for the whole "attack down the Uijongbu Corridor" thing which that scenario assumes. I'd imagine the attack would fail pretty quickly. The thing I'd be worried about is them sending shit loads of light infantry down the east coast. Thats mountain country, it wont be easy to deal with infantry in that.

In any event I'm not sure they even have enough ammo to last more than a few weeks. Despite that Seoul would be wrecked, along with at least half a dozen other South Korean cities along the border.
