There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

I'm surprised China and Russia still think negotiations are something to be had with this country refusing to talk with anyone (allies included) about backing down.
I always got the feeling that for Russia and China a significant reason to support North Korea was to piss off America by showing off their political ability to do so. Well, that and some superfluous idea of formerly communist countries sticking up for each other on a matter of principle.

It certainly does help that North Korea has some rare earths and particularly cheap labour to throw into the bargain.

Still, I doubt Un wants his closest neighbors/"allies" near them too. At least not directly, and certainly not China. Especially considering what he plans to do in the coming week.

Not to mention the fact that both countries have repeatedly sided with the US in both sanctions and in decrying the Norks' use of missiles. Un is either that exceptional not to see how bad it is with his allies, or they're not giving much of a shit despite how many times neither side , North Korea in particular, want to talk to one another.

China sometimes blocked sanctions, if I'm not mistaken. But they, too, slowly grow weary of the chubby chancellor and his stupid antics.
2 Months ago, when KJU fired his long range missiles for the first time, a supposed expert from Germany said on TV these missiles might be of russian origin, though he did not state what made him think that... While I could see Russia selling missiles to KJU, without any kind of argument to support that claim, I am not inclined to put much faith into it.

I'm wondering if KJU will actually do something to threaten China next week, cause it would be the dumbest thing possible and it does reek of desperation. A dog that's starting to lash out to everyone isn't healthy.

The political situation of North Korea in Asia was always interesting, but with the recent developements, it's becoming more and more fascinating to watch.

I'm not denying that China's blocked sanctions, just that they were willing to agree with these two recent ones. Russia as well. Even if they were dulled down from the original plan.

As for the event, I doubt Kim will miss it. The last time China held a conference, he launched a H-Bomb underground and caused a 6.3 earthquake. And it's probably easier to fire off against their supposed ally to teach them where they stand in the relationship. And if a few of them do wind up hitting Chinese cities, even if unintentionally, I wouldn't be surprised if China just cut ties outright than keep holding onto that frayed leash.

Because Xi hates Tubby, and only keeps him around because he doesn't want the US hanging around 24/7. But if this show of force backfires, Un's steadily declining relationship with them will be over. And he knows it. The man's fighting an increasingly losing battle with both ally and enemy alike. But he'll never admit it.

For Russia, maybe. China has a vital national interest in not having a U.S. proxy state right on its border. If the situation with China deteriorates because of Trump's bellowing and inarticulate grunting, that's about the only way it could end up in a serious war. With any luck, the generals can restrain him. And hey, maybe there actually is some four dimensional chess, or at least checkers, involving the appearance of a lunatic at the helm while the situation is actually being orchestrated behind the scenes. Yeah, :optimistic:

Depends. Trump's being completely vague about the whole thing aside from things like "calm before the storm" and "you'll just have to see".

And honestly, I'm not too keen about that, because it just raises even more questions. I understand if it's because they don't want more info leaked out to North Korea. Yet if it isn't, there's no reason to be so secretive.

But do they have enough of a grid for it to be worth it?

You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? This really shows just how far behind it's neighbors the Norks really are. Without context you could mistake them for another body of water, they're a literal deadzone is a sea of light.

I wouldn't really cite The Star, it's probably the most sensationalist paper out there after the Sunday Sport, but if this is true, things are about to get very interesting.

Right now, they're the only source mentioning it, but I wouldn't be surprised if he went 3 for 3 against China regardless.

Damn, that is dark. Really does show how much Un gives a shit about his people and his country.

It is sad really, those people deserve better than to be toyed around by a tart.

EDIT: I think a good example was this video clip from a joint exchange concert held during the "Sunshine Policy" with several K-pop groups performing to an audience composed of top officials from the workers' party.

What I'm interested in is what and where things are being smuggled out of the country in case things go to shit. You know the ruling family members and other top 1% of 1% aren't going to allow themselves to be captured or blown up, or live without the mediocre wealth they've spent decades starving their countrymen to acquire.

As far as I know, the Chinese still get their seafood smuggled in from the North.

UPDATE: Some more shit going down.

Firstly, another close ally of the Norks is coming to their senses:

And another small Earthquake near their testing site:

The fact that Un's not considering the potential environmental damage his missiles are doing to his land makes me wonder if he really does care for the potential damage it could do to his people. Even if they move (or as the article implies, do an above-ground test), they'll still be screwing up the mountains they're taking the tests in.

Korean outlets are reporting that fatty has damaged his launching area. Rather, these two clowns below have done that.

N.Korea's Key 'Rocket Men' Absent from Major Events
  • By Kim Myong-song

Two key officials in charge of North Korea's missile development were absent at recent major events, a mass rally in Pyongyang on Saturday and the Workers Party anniversary on Tuesday.

Neither Ri Man-gon, who oversees the party's department in charge of nuclear weapons and missile development, nor Kim Rak-gyom, the head of the Strategic Rocket Forces who is in charge of ballistic missile launches, showed up.

That has given rise to speculation that they are busy somewhere else preparing for a fresh missile launch.

"Ri and Kim were not seen in the footage and images released by North Korean state media of a full session of the party's committee last Saturday," a government source here said Tuesday.

"There's little chance that Ri and Kim have been dismissed or purged because they've been praised for major achievements recently," a staffer of a government-funded think tank here said. "It's highly likely that they were absent because they'd been given an important assignment."

Either way, I'm certain that Lee Man-Gon and Kim Rak-Gyeom were mentioned a while back as being the wind beneath fatty's rocket wings.
A few years back KJU was influenced to change the organisation of the WKP's government regime. So basically the idea was less influence from military and more from "officials". This was said to be due to wanting to build up the economy and downgrade the military. So fatty did just that. This upset the military greatly, as they had whatever minor funds they were getting, cut considerably and wealthy elites were flooding positions of power.
Anyone with any sort of East Asian or Korean history knowledge knows that this is a step back in time to where Yangban (the ruling class) had all the positions of power and were soft, pale and made bad choices.

So, after fatty depleted the military spend and culled military leaders from positions of power - a huge step away from his father's ideas - fatty then got ass hurt over his foreign money being cut and people turning their back on him.
And who and what does fatty need now? A well funded military.

Ergo, you have Man-gon and Rak-Gyeom blowing up their own launch facilities because fatty listened to people he's probably killed off and de-funded his military. Who now also hate him. This means "Top quarity bombs made in DPRK!".

I wish the media would report this more, because fact is way more hilarious than the hyperbole and fear mongering. The dumb fatty says his hand is closer to the trigger to bomb Guam. I'd say his hand is closer to a cheese wheel and some YSL cigarettes right now.

Accidentally blowing the lid off your underground nuclear test site and creating a giant geyser of radioactive waste, it's not just for rural Mississippi anymore. Congrats, Kim! You will soon reach a 1964 atomic hillbilly level of fuckup.
