I'm not sure why its layed out like a political fight

You're damn right it's political! Sean Murray should be rotting in jail for having lied his ass off about every feature in the game, in live TV, game conventions and so on. Instead he gets to walk away with all of the fools' money and even get support from some of them! Stockholm syndrome much?

I have no gripes with you man. I admit that I knowingly used you as an example when I did get you point. Anyway, I believe both of us can agree the game isn't worth $15 - even if you feel like it's not a total waste of money either.

Bumping this two years later. No Man's Sky still exists, it had some updates that added base building, ground vehicles, an actual story line that isn't shit, and now they're adding VR and multiplayer to the game.

How this game managed to survive this long and not get shafted after its abysmal release is something of a surprise to me.

Because a small team made an enormous amount of money at release. The more surprising thing that they didn't fuck off with the money and are actually trying finish their totally-not-early-access game.

I play NMS a lot, easily 30+ hours a week. As a survival game it simplistic enough to be accessible and easy enough to learn but also has enough depth to be engrossing.

Plus it is just a gorgeous game.

it looks like a ps2 game remastered for the ps3 and not very well

Actual multiplayer next update!!!!!
Finally other people will be able to see my exotic ship which looks like a dildo!

Let's see you make a game that renders an entire planet with plants, animals, floating robots, ships, atmospheric effects, water, weather, etc and land top tier graphics in the process.
nigga that's some bullshit right there, just because I can't cook doesn't mean I can't say if something tastes like shit

mind you I do like NMS' visuals although they get kinda samey

Lack of variety is NMS' biggest issue imo.

1.5 Update trailer:
1.5 leaked footage of a oceanic blizzard world:
Anyways the next update (aptly called NEXT) is coming out this following Tuesday, here is what is known so far via released change notes, trailer, and people who got a copy early and leaked stuff:

  • You can build a base anywhere now, underground, underwater, on the side of a mountain etc. with multiple bases per planet if you wish.
  • Resource system was redone, there's refineries and things you can build now.
  • More variety in base building, 20,000 base part limit.
  • Multiplayer, 4 person per party but multiple parties can interact, so there's an unknown maximum to how many people you can see. You can collaborate and build with people in your party.
  • Customizable skins/bodies for your character.
  • Graphics have been overhauled to make things look prettier and realistic, not as plastic looking as it once was. There's some more stuff added to the procedural generation so there's more variety in animals, plants, trees.
  • Animal AI overhauled, herd behavior, predator stalking.
  • Ringed planets, it's just a graphical thing, nothing special with the rings yet.
  • selectable 3rd person view.
  • You can create space fleets now, up to 50 ships can be added to your fleet, there's also frigates which can be upgraded and apparently multi-crewed. The fleets can be sent off by themselves to other systems to do special missions for you.
If anything this seems like sort of a soft relaunch. It certainly looks better IMO and I might give it another chance.

Another interesting thing is that Sean Murray made a statement apologizing for the shitty launch, lack of communication and explanation of that. They're wanting to do weekly updates now after this patch releases.

Here is the mentioned Galactic Atlas, which shows points of interest uploaded by the players, with a description of the place, pictures, and portal address (think Star Gate).
