Looks like the only service that makes the shithole formerly known as Twitter usable is dead once again, and this time no workarounds are to be seen. The instances that use actual accounts instead of guest tokens (to access NSFW content, for example) are still working, but expect them to be rate limited 95% of time unless accounts they use get detected and banned.

This coincides with attempted aggressive scraping reported by graf:

If Josh keeps using xitter while it keeps spitting on face of people who actually try to access it, I don't know what else to say.

God fucking dammit. No wonder why it won't load again like usual, even with other alternative instances.

Note that you can still setup your own private instances with user accounts. I may be releasing my script to mass-register twitter accounts at some point also.

It is sad to see nitter dying if you wanted to read certain information or do research on lolcows. RIP Nitter

This becomes a good reason to ditch social media and do something less anxiety-inducing.

I begin to wonder if Lucas and/or LFJ have sent their personnal army to take care of Nitter?
Doubt it. Since Musk bought it, they’ve been working to make the official website and clients the only way to access Twitter.

Third-party applications went a while back when Twitter hugely increased the API fees, then the login requirement broke Nitter the first time, now guest accounts have gone too (which to begin with was a weird Twitter for Android oddity).

Twitter has always been a shithole website that also ruined the majority of the western civilization, as well as the world over

ive seen people upthread saying it still works on their machines, is this a regional thing?

sotwe.com at least still seems to be up and working. It doesn’t quite have the same functionality as Nitter but lets you still view tweets and replies by any account that isn’t protected or whatever. It doesn’t appear to suffer from rate limiting but it has pop-ups out the ass.

Not as far as I understand it (from the discussion in the GitHub issue):
  • Guest account tokens last for 30 days.
  • Such tokens are no longer being issued.
  • Tokens that are rate-limited (due to eg automated scraping) are liable to be revoked entirely.
  • Once an instance is out of its current tokens it’s dead.

I fucking hate websites that lock you out from seeing basically everything unless you make an account and log in.

The 2 Nitter instances I used the most were working when this thread was started, but are now both dead.

Hopefully another solution is found at some point.

According to this user, there's a Nitter fork where you can use a personal account for the tokens. He has a private instance and uses it behind a VPN. I'm not sure how well the privacy features work with you using your own tokens, but I honestly just use Nitter for the lack of Javascript and for getting rid of the infinite scroll. I'll have to see if I can get this running on my Pi.
