As a nice contrast to file sizes getting bigger and bigger, Xenoblade Chronicles X DE is only 15GB, down from the Wii U original’s 23. Neat. I guess when there’s a will to cut costs by squeezing everything into a 16GB cartridge, there’s a way.

a lot of the filesize in the Wii U version was from downloadable content packs to speed up loading speed, I think without them, so whats on the disc, is still around 14gb

I did some more research into the possibility of Switch cartridges dying from being NAND-based storage instead of mask ROM (this is true as far as I can tell) and decided to put all my 30+ of my physical games in the system to “recharge” them. One of them gave an error saying the cartridge couldn’t be read, and continued to do that for a few more attempts. Another cartridge did the same thing once or twice, then started being read. I put that first cartridge in again and it now consistently works. A third game loaded the first time but took a couple seconds to load. These were all games I hadn’t played since probably 2018.

The most common answer I see is that the Wii U eShop version (which you’d think would be the most space-efficient while maximizing load speed) was 22.7 GB, though I can’t find a clear-cut answer.

Since the Wii U had a hard drive, it sped up load by duplicating files across multiple locations. I believe that's what Call of Duty does and that's why its half a terabyte now. The download packs improve LODs and texture pop in as well, so the digital download including it by default makes sense, since its not bound by disc size. The Wii U discs were a weird dual layer DVD, not a Blu-ray, so the storage size on them was not very big and they likely ran out of space.

Xenoblade 2 was 12gb and 14gb after all the DLC and updates, and Xenoblade 3 was 15gb, so Xenoblade X being 15gb while also having even more content and improved graphics is still quite impressive, and it will likely load much faster because of the flash storage as well.

When I upgraded to a Switch OLED I put ~200 physical games in to force the patches to download since they didn't transfer on upgrade (btw this sucked).

The slot is kinda picky sometimes and just doesn't want to read, it seems to be more down to how the pins are seated than anything else.

I'm not worried about NAND carts dying. The articles you read online are very poorly researched. Most will reference rated lifespan of the chip which is how long the manufacturer _guarantees_ the product will last, meaning they are liable to compensate partners if the product does not. It's like if you read the shelf life on a can of beans and it says 2028... you know it will probably last forever in there, but there must be a date stamped on the packaging.

You will see similar fearmongering about CD lifespan, which are based on rated lifespans for CD-Rs, and even then if stored properly (not kept in a hot car for 20 years) even the oldest CD-Rs that exist work just fine. You could also take a USB flash drive or SD card that hasn't been used in many, many years and it will likely be readable without issue.

Under normal conditions we're probably fine for many decades to come.

On Baidu, the Chinese leaker who posted CAD models of the Switch 2 posted a screenshot of a conversation he had with a black market seller who claims to have a Switch 2 unit in his store. The seller also claims he will have Switch 2 Pro Controllers in stock next week, and is charging $40,000 for the console, dock, and a controller. The post was deleted, but some trannyfaggot reuploaded it to Famiboards

Wow $40,000 for something that looks marginally different to the Switch 1 and includes bog-standard hardware.

Some dented Nintendo fan will obviously pay for it though.

This is so utterly retarded. The concept of cooming and genuinely wanting to buy something you literally already know you will get for a fraction of the price within the year is rage inducing. What actually makes it the worst is the fact Nintendo has all but confirmed the Switch 2 is functionally the same bells and whistles but a little upgraded.

I also remember that being the running theory for why they came back and slapped Ryujinx after it was clear Yuzu emulator only got raped for making money. It would've probably taken minimal effort for the devs to have updated those emulators for Switch 2 games.

People bought PS3s for $599 US Dollars back when the dollar was worth something.
The only ones who did were die-hard Playstation fans willing to wait a year rather than buy an xbox, and those who wanted the cheapest and best blu-ray player on the market.
People bought Laser Discs back in the 80s and they cost a fortune.

The price is not reflective of the economy at the time.

$40,000 sounds like a lot but remember, there 100% some Nintendie who would pay that price to play a Switch 2 with 0 actual Switch 2 games available for it

or perhaps they expect a gamejourno website to buy it for the exclusivity.
Even then I doubt nowadays a gamejourno website would actually cut a profit if it had "exclusive access" to the Switch 2. It's a total minor upgrade/variation and has super generic hardware.

It's like trying to get someone to pay $40k for the iPhone 18. No one cares, the iPhone 17 is literally the same fucking thing.

A $300 or $400 console is a LOT cheaper than say a car. And in a down economy perversely it's entertainment that tends to do well, people want a distraction from their problems.

But I can't see them getting away with making the cost of new games even more expensive.
Inflation and currency debasement is a bitch. That 350$ dollar console now when the dollar isn't worth anything is probably closer to 599 than some would think. Games are already at 70, and who thought they'd go there growing up with N64? Inevitably, before this economic bullshit is through, we'll more than likely go higher than that.

Not to mention that it's likely to be either counterfeit or bricked until launch day.

The $40k is probably so some Chinese guy can figure out the exact specifications the earliest to make knock off joycons and other parts to sell on alibaba or whatever.
