Nintendo pledges "action" over inappropriate use of its characters so players "not made to feel uncomfortable"
Nintendo has responded to concern over the inappropriate use of its characters online and said it would take "appropriate action" against anything that would make some players "feel uncomfortable".

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was recently questioned by a shareholder who said they had "come across cases on social media where Nintendo IP and games are used inappropriately". This "inappropriate" use of Nintendo's characters "poses the risk of damaging" the company's brand, the question continued - so what was Nintendo planning to do about it?

In response, Furukawa said Nintendo's management policy was to "bring smiles through entertainment" (but presumably not the kind of smiles generated by "inappropriate" use).

"I will refrain from commenting on individual cases, but we believe that appropriate action must be taken against any behaviour that undermines this policy," Furukawa continued, without specifying what that action might entail.

"Our goal is to create an environment where everyone can enjoy playing games. We will continue to make every effort to ensure that our consumers are not made to feel uncomfortable, not only in our games but also anywhere they come into contact with our IP."

Of course, fans have been using Nintendo characters for "inappropriate" reasons for a very, very long time. The most high-profile example of this in recent memory was a certain Bowsette - a spicy fan mash-up of Peach and Bowser that Nintendo initially refused to comment on when it went viral and trended on social media worldwide, and then later ruled as non-canon.

Few creators address the use of their characters by fans for less-than-appropriate reasons. Why? Well, I'm reminded of when Ken Levine once asked reddit to stop drawing naughty pictures of Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite. Simply put, it doesn't work.

People will always be horny, especially Nintendo fans.

But perhaps it's worth remembering - Nintendo is watching.

You should have been aware for a while that the quality of English text translations never exactly mattered to Japanese devs, simply because it's beyond their scope. Also this is a QA of a shareholder's meeting, there were similarly loaded questions in the past (like how there weren't enough women working in the company iirc) so acting like a politician is the key.

Now this is interesting. They are trying to cater to the troons but fail to realise that they are the most porn/fanfic addicted demographic. How long until their efforts are deemed transphobic?

Also, do not fight the audience. You will lose. Honestly, they should make an official version of Bowsette that is Bowser 's sister or something. Monetise the engagement rather than fight it.

If you like Prime the sequel is also very good, the art design goes to 11, same with Corruption. Note that the remaster subtly changes some of the text in the scans, specifically about the Chozo, and it takes a little something away from their relationship with Samus. In the GC version they refer to Samus as a "hatchling", which for a race of bird aliens really cements the fact that she is considered to be one of their own.

Bowsette is retarded zoomer garbage, but I agree. I remember being a kid and thinking it was epic pwnage when video games did that sort of thing. Their audience would love it. It lets fans know that they're paying attention to what we're talking about.

Even if it's just a throwaway line where Bowser talks about his sister back in Bowserland or whatever, it's a solid gesture of good will.

Nintendo is going to have a tough time because if I draw Yoshi inflation fetish porn and only post it to my blog, that is covered under fair use as it is transformative, non-commercial, and you'd be hard pressed to argue it has affected the commercial value of their work.

It's rarely about the legality of it, but rather how much litigation you can afford before going broke. Nintendo has deep, full coffers. How much do you have?

They should just make a version of Bowsette that is Bowser 's sister (as opposed to a gender bender) and make gangbusters. Always take the option that sells The Waifu Merch! Sex Sells!
