This whole thing kinda sounds weird to me, because wasn't the abandoned GBA game already reworked into being Risky's Revenge? So aren't they essentially making the same game twice?
I’m no expert on Shantae, but I think Risky’s Revenge takes place after what would have been (and now will be) the second game.
Bad character/world design and art style, boring, repetitive "die until you get it right via muscle memory" gameplay, shitty level design (perhaps technically sound but these stages don't feel like actual organic locations)... It was certainly the shit.
You can just say you were bad at it, we won’t judge you.

As it is with Celeste, if you don't know anything about the author's twitter (and lets face it, most people don't ever look up outside information on game they've played, movies they've watched, etc) then you have no reason to think there's any faggery gaggery in the game at all.
It's very hard to ignore it in Celeste's case, just scroll down to the reviews on Steam and see.

I'm bad at most video games, but I can still recognize them as good or bad. I value visuals a lot, and I can't stomach the ugly, edgy middle scholar's notepad-type doodles the game uses.

That stage layouts don't feel memorable in any way. You think of Sonic 2's Chemical Plant Zone, what comes to mind is a believable setting (in relative terms). It feels like Sonic is moving through actual locations in his world. Super Meat Boy has this "built in a level editor" look and feel, and nothing about it is memorable.

Its first stage won't be cherished like Mario's 1-1, Sonic's Green Hill Zone, or Mega Man X's Highway Stage. It's just some nondescript, generic little room with nothing interesting to look at or do, except stare at some unsightly meat blob.

We should probably spin this off, because this might be kind of a derail.

Why go through these mental gymnastics?
I have a natural tendency to overthink things.

Part of it is a desire to future proof though: I'd rather do the thinking now so that if an actual nuanced case comes up in the future, I'll have already some mental framework. It's like playing an RTS game--you preferably build ten barracks before the Zerg Rush happens.

which you already know for a fact both doesn't exist and wouldn't be warranted nowadays even if it did.
I disagree on the "wouldn't be warranted" part. Human beings are not computers, we can forget things, have brainfarts, and generally fuck up. Heck, I myself have dabbled in being a writer and since I like colorful things, have at times had characters with, say, rainbow-themed clothing... completely forgetting that this is now associated with the gayness.

sorry if that counts as a powerlevel but it probably explains why I'm a bit touchy on this subject. Between stances like yours and SJWs, its basically a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

I'm gonna keep this short (like the size of Madeline's dick after she cut it off) but.... you and me have different definitions of "very hard to ignore."

If its not in the game itself, and in fact is on a website you have to specifically seek out (in fact, in a section you have to specifically opt to look at)... its not hard to ignore at all. In fact I myself have never even been to Celeste's steam page.

I've never played Super Meat Boy. I looked into it because I heard it was similar to Celeste but... honestly, just from screenshots and videos I basically agree with your criticisms of its aesthetics.

I don't normally like these kinds of superhard platformers, Celeste works for me because of its appealing visuals and overall positive/encouraging nature (that it never really mocks you for failing, for example). Super Meat Boy though, reeks of edgelord cynicism and mean-spiritedness, which coupled with it being a game meant to test your patience, would probably just piss me the fuck off.

That's why I mentioned intent, it's not impossible to parse meanings and intent, especially when considering external factors from the work itself, such as the author's political leanings. Even if we wanted to for some reason pretend there's a shadow of a doubt that the rainbow flag you mentioned is fag propaganda, we know the creator is a faggot and that goes out the window.

Not really, stances like mine are just "Marxist agitprop is bad, m'kay".

I'm glad someone agrees, usually I get bewildered responses with that criticism. I mean it could be worse, but it's definitely not appealing.

Celeste certainly looks much better, still not my cup of tea, but it looks okay. You're right about SMB, and I'm also not usually a fan of these kinds of hardcore precision platformers either. 1001 Spikes is the only one I liked, and I still eventually dropped it because at a certain point the frustration overshadows the fun.

There was apparently another interesting game that was showcased in the Indie Direct for only five seconds, and I only discovered it through a Famitsu article:

You shut your whore mouth, Super Meat Boy was the shit. At least the original was. Everything after it is just regular shit, from what I’ve seen. And the Wii U/PS4/Vita port has a new soundtrack that’s mostly by Ridiculon, aka “the guys who followed up multiple Danny Baranowsky soundtracks and are significantly worse every single time”.
My annoyance is that the Nintendo Switch port of this game also has the downgraded soundtrack sadly, DannyB's tracks, on the original PC release, were the kind of music that did slap no matter how much you had to retry a level. I never bought the game ever again on other platforms specifically because of this.

Opened the Indie showcase and am instantly subjected to scottish tranny with squeaky voice
Your description instantly made Mrs Doubtfire's voice pop into my head.

Also reminds me of of tuning into the Disney Dreamlight Valley showcase to see everyone has their pronouns listed next to their names when they appear onscreen for the first time. They were all regular chicks and dudes and were all he/him and she/her so it was utterly pointless.

re: WayForward/Shantae
The Shantae games are pretty good platforming games for kids and talking about them with any sort of depth is the same as being an adult autist complaining that the Mario games aren't hard enough. They're overrated because of their adult coomer audience that WayForward actively promotes. They also use the scam site Limited Run for everything so never buy anything from them and just pirate.

Japan got its own Indie Direct the day after, and I always find funny how these streams actually have better presentation than the american counterparts, by showing in detail the gameplay. No clips of devs saying useless commentary to pad out the Direct either.

The Gecko Gods looks cute, might buy it during a bargin sale on the eshop. Same for Little Kitty, Big City which looks to be a nice gift for a family relative.
Assuming it's not expensive, I could get Toasterball as something silly to play between irl friends.

Most American and European gamers have precisely zero interest in anything remotely approaching "gameplay".

Should I get Splatoon 3 or Galactic Civilizations IV?

Yep, the original was cancelled 20-ish years ago and now they’re picking up where they left off, same dev tools and everything. The GBA version will even have link cable multiplayer, which makes me wonder how they’ll handle that in the Switch version. Wireless only, or all on one console?
what irks me about this was is that they could have done this at any virtually any time after they , especially with when they ported the original GBC game to switch with emulation because the fact they could have sold it on bringing the original game to modern consoles and a finished version of what would have been the original sequel to it could have convinced a lot of people, especially the actual fans of the games to pick it up, even if it's the latter they were buying it for.

complaining that the Mario games aren't hard enough
Which is not really even true. On a first playthrough they're a decent enough challenge to make you pay attention and try, which is what good balance strives to achieve. And often the games are tough to 100% or get a high score, which are what conditions constitute optional higher challenges.

People who want to turn Mario into a gruelling Dark Souls-esque platformer so they can satisfy their gaming masochism are the type to suck the fun out of games.

Which is not really even true.
It's pretty true for the NSMB games. Outside some turbosperg challenges, they're pretty piss easy and that's not including the easy basically a cheat items or the characters you can't die with. They just have power ups everywhere, low enemy density in places and less enemies that will just fuck you up if you're not careful. It's not a bad thing for kids and all but they are kind of just not fun to play as an adult. The mainline games during their time were fine; the NSMB games just needed to be less special ed kid games.
