We should probably spin this off, because this might be kind of a derail.
Why go through these mental gymnastics?
I have a natural tendency to overthink things.
Part of it is a desire to future proof though: I'd rather do the thinking now so that if an
actual nuanced case comes up in the future, I'll have already some mental framework. It's like playing an RTS game--you preferably build ten barracks
before the Zerg Rush happens.
which you already know for a fact both doesn't exist and wouldn't be warranted nowadays even if it did.
I disagree on the "wouldn't be warranted" part. Human beings are not computers, we can forget things, have brainfarts, and generally fuck up. Heck, I myself have dabbled in being a writer and since I like colorful things, have at times had characters with, say, rainbow-themed clothing... completely forgetting that this is now associated with the gayness.
sorry if that counts as a powerlevel but it probably explains why I'm a bit touchy on this subject. Between stances like yours and SJWs, its basically a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
It's very hard to ignore it in Celeste's case, just scroll down to the reviews on Steam and see.
I'm gonna keep this short (like the size of Madeline's dick after she cut it off) but.... you and me have different definitions of "very hard to ignore."
If its not in the game itself, and in fact is on a website you have to specifically seek out (in fact, in a section you have to specifically opt to look at)... its not hard to ignore at all. In fact I myself have never even been to Celeste's steam page.
Its first stage won't be cherished like Mario's 1-1, Sonic's Green Hill Zone, or Mega Man X's Highway Stage. It's just some nondescript, generic little room with nothing interesting to look at or do, except stare at some unsightly meat blob.
I've never played Super Meat Boy. I looked into it because I heard it was similar to Celeste but... honestly, just from screenshots and videos I basically agree with your criticisms of its aesthetics.
I don't normally like these kinds of superhard platformers, Celeste works for me because of its appealing visuals and overall positive/encouraging nature (that it never really mocks you for failing, for example). Super Meat Boy though, reeks of edgelord cynicism and mean-spiritedness, which coupled with it being a game meant to test your patience, would probably just piss me the fuck off.
