SNES & N64 could've done it
Dude, they had different pinouts. It would have required an add-on device to emulate it (the Sega solution) or some sort of double-pack system. Neither would have been financially viable. Discs were the big leap that helped make BC an expectation instead of a surprise.

Apparently Nintendo was seriously considering it, the Super Famicom even debuted with the "Famicom Adapter", so financial viability may be up for debate but I think it's reasonable to assume it would have been.

I figure that the determining factor was greed, financial viability aside they probably figured they'd just make even more money not offering a solution for backwards compatibility at all.

Source? I have never heard of this before and googling gives me nothing. I am well aware of the story about them wanting it but not being able to pull it off due to time/money/tech constraints though.

Here's what I found, the info seems legit. I can see why they dropped this adapter idea, the implementation seems odd.

That "adapter" sure looks like a standalone to me. Probably became the "NES 2"/"New Famicom".

edit: Reading the article, it was a standalone NES that connected to the SNES to use its improved RGB out. A niche of a niche of a niche.... yeah no wonder it didn't make it.

*chuckles in Master System versions*
That's my point. Game Gear versions of (almost) all the games were nothing more than the master system versions shrunken to a handheld with a smaller resolution with the zoom in like 150-200 percent. Your reflexes and optical senses had to be more tighter and stronger if you wanted to actually beat the game.

Also SMB Deluxe had the option to move the camera with up, down, AND select, so you could see where you were going. Couldn't do that with Game Gear unless your name was Sonic, and even then it was just up and down.

In other words, Nintendo held your hand, while sega kicked you off and went "FLY, BITCH!!!"

Yeah, thing is I don't believe Deluxe was ever ported to anything else so unfortunately that version of SMB is trapped with its screen crunch.

Not being able to see where the fuck you're going is core Sonic gameplay though
True enough, and it's my main complaint too.

This honestly hurts but I fully expect the fandom to make their own damn servers just like they did for the DS.
Way ahead of you, though it’s not done yet.
"Hey, we know we axed the nationaldex, and some past gen moves as well, but we'll still keeping the service that only works on those past gen games that are obsolite now because... 🤷‍♂️"
Can’t you import from Pokemon Bank to Home?
