my god, Detective Pikachu 2 looks like a 2000s Gamecube, DS or Wii game, it screams outdated.
Fun fact: that's because Detective Pikachu is made by Creatures, the 3D modelling guys who've been using the same damn models since 2013. You can tell from the trailer that these ones don't even have SV's updated textures, so these are literally the exact same 3D models from ten years ago upscaled and slapped onto a Switch in HD.

I forgot to mention, this is the first Direct in years that didn't open with a fucking COVID disclaimer. Finally.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is living up to the name for me, I'm so happy that we're finally getting a return to the more cartoony aesthetic for Mario. Being that the series is so heavily inspired by Dr. Slump, it really feels like it's going back to the roots of the franchise.
What?

That new 2D Mario is actually pretty interesting. Pikmin 4 looks great, but it's more or less them cashing in on how the first two games worked

Trailer for both Pikmin 1 and 2 on Switch is out
You can get both for 50 bucks in a bundle or buy each one separately for 30 bucks each
HD rereleases, no updates to textures or models.

IT'S ABOUT GODDAMN TIME YOU JAP-NIGGERS PUT SOME RESPECT ON MY GIRL DAISY'S NAME.

*A-hem* The Super Mario RPG remake and Penny's Big Breakaway were cool too, but that's about it for things that peaked my interest. Mid, as always.

Still a damn sight better than both SoyStation and Hexbox, lol.

So I can press the "upscale to 1080p" button in Dolphin and get the same effect. Hopefully they'll at least add both traditional and motion controls since the Wii ports only had motion.

Fucking WILD to know that SMRPG is getting a remake cuz I saw a bit of this video of a romhack of the game just before I went to sleep.
Call it unsuspectedly wishing upon a star because holy shit I did not see this coming.

Lmao, they had to retexture the battery because they couldn't bother to renew the rights to have product placements in the game.

hold on

is that the only updated texture in the game
is the only change going to be that there is less product placement

MGS collection, only 1/2/3, 4 is never leaving the ps3, also not the gamecube remake or the psp game
This is only "Vol. 1" of the MGS collection. Presumably, there will be a volume 2, so they are probably saving 4 and the PSP titles for that.

As for the rest of the Direct, it was okay. As has been said, if it was just any other direct it would be fine, but for being essentially their E3 level showcase, this was unimpressive. If anything, this direct probably just confirms that Switch is nearing the end of its life, and game development for it is slowing down. Nintendo just hasn't had much to show for all the work they've been doing. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Prime 4 is pushed back to the whatever the Switch's successor is, or, at the very least, is a cross-platform releases.

Honestly, Direct was pretty bad. I didn't outright hate anything, but it felt like they had nothing big to show. The best announcement was sadly Batman to me. I am surprised that Arkham Knight is running on the thing as that game still has better graphics than most titles today.

As for the actual announcements:
  • Super Mario RPG - Don't care personally, guess Geno fans get a win.
  • Peach Title - Could be interesting, though was disappointed as I thought they would transition to Donkey Kong.
  • Luigi's Mansion 2 - Why? It ain't even a loved game. I have no issues with it, but it feels like a waste of Next Level's talent (if working on it).
  • Mario Kart 8 DLC - Fantastic. Going to assume Diddy will be the last character added.
  • Mario Wonder - Disappointment. Odyssey came out in 2017 and yet no new 3D Mario (No counting Fury). I like Daisy's inclusion, and am going to assume Rosalina will join, but why?
  • WarioWare - Surprised the Switch is getting 2 entries, looks good.
  • Pikmin 4 - Looks fine, not a big Pikmin fan, but will probably get.
  • Penny - Interested!
  • Head Bangers - Battle Royal Garbage! 🤮
  • Mario + Rabbids - Should have shown Rayman
  • Sonic - Interested!
  • Persona 5 Tactica - Looks interesting
  • The rest... honestly who cares?

I kind of hope it ends up being cross-platform since that could really help sales...

Well, it's an given that Dragon Quest would go all in on collecting monsters.

The Battle Royal stuff is hardly anything new

But who would want to play an farming simulator that's entirely online and it's for an console that's on the verge of being replaced?

ftfy
seriously, has anyone given a shit about a single new farming game since Stardew Valley? All I've heard from people who can play these games without falling asleep half an hour in is that there's no point in playing anything else in the genre, Stardew Valley is the best game on offer and every single new game that's come out since has basically just been a shitty clone of it. The only thing anyone's actually looking forward to is that Chocolatier game ConcernedApe's doing next.

I think farming sims are also starting to catch onto this, because something like half of the ones I see coming soon are now hybrids with other genres. It's why I said the genre was already "creatively bankrupt" and getting desperate beforehand. Because "mash genre with other genre" is a telltale sign of oversaturation and decline- funnily enough, that which is typically caused by an indie game coming out that ends up being so good that it destroys any other indie dev's attempt at the genre (or just sheer fucking incompetence if referring to the Monster Catching genre)- as can be seen with Open World Survival Craft schlock, roguelikes, deck-building/card games, "le quirky indie RPG"s...

I assume less because they couldn't be assed to renew 20 year old IRL brand designs from way back when, so it'll just be easier to phone in fake brand textures instead. Kinda sucks from a worldbuilding standpoint but understandable I guess. They bothered to retexture the products but couldn't make a "HD" retexture of the whole games, geg

I'm glad that SMRPG is getting recognition but it has the typical cursed remake issues including the rubbishy redone score which is always a bugbear of mine.

Penny's Big Breakaway has a really pleasing arty-style ...except for the main character. Her eyes (and face in general) are just *wrong*. It's like if they mixed Goemon with an Egyptian deity.

The new Mario game looks kinda interesting but I really don't like those flowers that won't shut up. It feels like a cheap way to try and capture the livestreamer audience with ingame commentary instead of someone in the corner.

It's an Akira Toriyama manga that's obscure in the west but seriously influenced Mario, Sonic and probably tons of other crap that nobody knows about because nobody reads comics about little girls over here.

Going into this Direct, I thought about what Nintendo could announce and came to the realization that they've basically used up all of their "once per console" games. Every Mario sport has been used up except baseball (unless they wanted to do another Sports Mix), they just did a second 3D Zelda, Prime 4 is in development hell, Game Freak constantly shits out new Pokemon, two new mainline Kirbys plus a remaster, nearly every worthwhile port-able Wii U game has already been ported, we've been getting Gamecube/Wii "remasters" out the ass, etc etc.

They're even doubling up on series that usually only get one new entry per generation (WarioWare, 2D Mario, arguably Xenoblade), so what's left? A new Rhythm Heaven before Nintendo finally moves on? Super-secret F-Zero and Star Fox revivals? My Switch 2 speculation isn't even wishful thinking; I genuinely don't know what else they could do to extend the Switch's life without retreading old ground, but at the same time it's still selling gangbusters, so I can't imagine they're in any rush to move away from it. The earliest a Switch 2 could even release would be... what, a summer 2024 reveal with a winter release date?

Because it's popular, sells well, and the last new one (excluding Mario Maker) was about 10 years ago?

Mario has a lot of things taken from Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump. Mario's movement in 64 was inspired by the main character Arale.

Many aspects like the tanuki suit, Mario running with his arms stretched out, and the wing cap can be traced back to it.
