It makes me wonder if Game Freak did this intentionally, just as a way to proven that an open-world Pokémon game doesn't work, and thus they can use that as an excuse to revert back to the old closed-maps in older games. It also makes me think that EA did with The Sims 3 being an unoptimized mess, just so that they could use that as an excuse to ditch the open-world in The Sims 4, citing "improving performance". Which turned out to be bullshit in the end, given that TS4's code is a literal spaghetti monster, and the lack of talent at EA doesn't help either.
Both were just cases of hugely rushed development (Sims 4 was originally going to be an MMO- a mobile one, if I remember right- and they had to patchwork all the work they'd done for that into a singleplayer framework after the SimCity disaster. Which was only a year earlier), but I'll at least give you some leeway for GameFreak considering how they handled shit like BW2's Difficulty modes and BDSP.
BDSP especially really felt like GF just going "we don't care about this so we won't even try", seeing as they shipped the work off to a mobile game dev and gave them like 11 months to do a remake, whereas BW2's selectable difficulties were:
  • exclusive to each game (W2 unlocked Easy, B2 unlocked Hard)
  • required trading with another game to get both difficulties
  • required beating the entire game on Normal first (even for Easy) and then resetting that save file you beat it with to play the new difficulty
  • barely changed anything save for increasing levels slightly and distributing more items across important boss fights
so i'm more open to thinking this might be GF sabotaging themselves to have an easier time of development lol

Weren't there rumors floating around about a 3D Donkey Kong game being in the works?
Specifically what kind of 3D game? A platformer? Or is it gonna be a 2.5D platformer with 3D graphics?

ARMS is pure second-tier and it is great!
it was also 6 years ago and kind of flopped
I wish there was more stuff like it but I think the closest we have by this point is like
Brain vs Brain (Academy) or indies :(
I remember there was a lot more of it near the Switch's launch- stuff like Snipperclips, Ring Fit, and (as you said) ARMS. Probably because it was a new system and they wanted to test out wacky shit with it. I really hope any Switch 2 that comes out prompts more development of these types of games...

Don't know yet, but if the rumor is to be believed, it's being worked on by the Mario Odyssey team.
(double-posting because I didn't see this until now and it's a different topic)
hasn't this rumor been floating around, totally unconfirmed, for something like 3 years now? I wouldn't count on it whatsoever, especially this close to the Switch's sunset. Would count on Prime 4 happening sooner, tbh

So with Zelda more or less out and the next big game being Metroid, what are the second-tier games we want to fill the void?

And why is it ARMS 2?
Pikmin 4, no?

Wouldn't be susprised if we got Switch 2 news around October again, like it happened for Switch (inb4 SwitchForce, Supermetaldave and Player Essence quote me as an insider)
