Reggie is actually very funny and is the pure definition of a team leader when it came to being the head honcho for Nintendo at one point. Him and Satoru Iwata’s friendship was very awesome and special.

In fact, I did not even know he wrote a book this year, I’m tempted to actually check it out.
 
As far as I can see the only thing he did was make Wii Sports a pack in title (genuinely genius move) but beyond that what made him so great?

I genuinely don't understand what Reggie even did besides memery.
He became the face of the company for the English-speaking world and blazed the trail for a new generation of down-to-earth media executives in the Internet-era. He is an expert salesman and was instrumental in helping Nintendo market its weird-looking Nintendo DS and Wii to Western audiences through television and online appearances. Reggie talked the talk, walked the walk and he played the games. After all, his name is Reggie and he's about kicking ass and taking names.

Nihon Falcom is one of Japan's premier RPG developers, and has been making games since 1982. The company is most famous for the Ys series, debuting in 1987 with Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished, and also later creating The Legend of Heroes series in 1989 with Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes.

And it seems like Nihon Falcom's president, Toshihiro Kondo, wants to do something with its large back catalogue. In the latest issue of Famitsu, Kondo has revealed that there are already "plans" to bring more titles to the Nintendo Switch. Perhaps not too surprising, given last year the company created an in-house development team for the Switch, but still exciting!
These comments were posted on ryokutya2089 and translated by Kazuma Hashimoto at Siliconera. Kondo does say that retro titles may need to be digital as there are more difficulties in creating physical releases (let alone more cost), but he's very positive about the system and wants to bring more games to it:
" The Nintendo Switch is a console that is very familiar to me, as my children often play it. Additionally, there is a wide range of people from various age groups because of the convenience of it being a handheld console. Once we had released titles on the PSP, we had a wider variety of different age groups playing our games, and we expect releasing titles on the Nintendo Switch will have the same effect. "

However, on the issue of releasing “retro” Nihon Falcom titles for the Switch, Kondo states that these titles will potentially appear as downloads. The reason for this is that releasing these titles as physical versions is more difficult.

When asked about Nihon Falcom titles outside of the announced The Legend of Natuya: Ad Astra appearing on the Nintendo Switch, Kondo states that there is already a plan in mind. However, he can’t provide details just yet and will share more information about this in the future.
 
He sure did a great job of that, Wii U turned out great. And 3DS, what a launch. Guy really knew his stuff.
I don't think there was anything anyone could have done to save the Wii U. It was a perfect storm of bad timing, naming and gimmick. I know there's the argument of better marketing so people didn't think it was a peripheral, but I'm not convinced that many people really never figured it out.

And for the 3DS...I actually forgot that it was launched at 250 bucks which is absurd when thinking how the Switch was 300 at launch.

I have a soft spot for Reggie at the end of the day simply because I like to believe he refused to okay a Mother 3 localization simply because he thought the fanbase was so annoying.

They changed the name of systems in the west before, otherwise we'd have got the "Family Computer" instead of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Not just the west either, the Game Boy was called the ComBoy Mini in Korea. I see no reason that abysmal name couldn't have been changed.

Aside from that, I don't think it ever received a permanent, significant price cut, nor did it get many particularly good bundles IIRC. Marketing could have been better in general.

I'm not saying Wii U could have been salvaged, by the way, I just think it could have performed better with some common sense. Why do a price cut and Ambassador Program for 3DS but dig your heels in on Wii U? Slash that fucking price, throw a bunch of games at people to sweeten the deal, that's what salvaged 3DS.

And speaking of Mother 3, localize that shit for Wii U, it'll help push systems too probably. I honestly can't think of a single thing they did to even try improving the situation. I know this is armchairing, but I honestly believe people overestimate the abilities of people running companies. Reggie was mostly a meme.

I've always wondered exactly how much say Nintendo of America gets when it comes to the names of the consoles, especially after the turn of the millennium.

Everything about Wii U was so stubborn I could see it being a set in stone directive from Japan, but at the same time I could see the idea of it being great marketing to keep the "Wii" name being the hubris and stupidity of the NoA marketing.

Well, it's a smaller change but our XL systems (DS/3DS) are called LL in Japan, I think it's because LL signifies "extra large" to them like XL does for us. Still, it's a change.

I think it wasn't Japan's fault because Canada did get a price cut. Also, I don't believe Wii Mini even launched in Japan, maybe they mandated it but I feel like it was the western branches that came up with it (don't quote me on that though). Canada got that first too, so I feel like they're just more proactive in the business than America is these days.

None of that was really his fault. Ultimately, post Hiroshi Yamauchi/Howard Lincoln era Nintendo of America were just yesmen to the Japanese HQ. That why Satoru Iwata was CEO of Nintendo of America, while Reggie was only COO; his job was to be the corporate face and run day to day operations, not guide Nintendo of America's corporate strategy or decisions. He could only influence them, not make them.

Those two were probably destined to fail regardless. Both were outdated hardware by the time they came out, had confusing names, played to long dead trends, and had shit launch titles. Imagine having to sell the general public on Pilot Wings or New Super Mario Bros. U as the must have titles. Nintendo’s head was super far up there own ass with these systems as the consoles lacked any ambitious titles outside of niche franchises like Fire Emblem. The company was basically coasting on memberberries throughout the 8th gen and the Mario, Pokémon, and Smash series suffered because of it.

I never got the appeal of buying so many physical games for the switch, especially if you use it portably. seems kinda inconvenient to have to carry around a lot of game cards with you, i rather just buy one game card and keep it in the switch forever and then just buy all other games digitally
You must be a young fag.

Playing a portable gaming system means carrying around stuff, especially different game cartridges, not to mention extra batteries and in some cases, chargers. It's part of the gamer lifestyle if you are a portable system fag.

Shit back in the 90s people were carrying entire PCs + 40 pound monitors around to do LAN gaming. Modern gamers know nothing of the struggle.
