RE Majora's Mask 3DS: as someone who didn't play it when it was new the new baby game options from the remaster like the Reverse Song of Time and being able to save mid cycle were a godsend for making the game more accessible. Also modern dual stick camera controls. I do think there should have been an accurate remake mode that disabled these though, that's not too much to ask. Understand why it's so controversial after OoT 3D ended up the best way to play the game.

I was hoping for ports of OoT 3D and Majora's Mask 3D for the Zelda 35th anniversary, maybe paired with the emulated N64 versions, but instead we got an underwhelming handheld with a couple of NES and Gameboy games instead. Oh well, I have Citra.

RE Mario 64: there really needs to be a definitive remake of the game. The original still is one of the best controlling platformers to this day, but the camera is terrible even for the time. Meanwhile the DS remake has 4 characters to play as (but you can still just play as Mario mostly), controllable camera, a camera center button, more and better stars to collect, and everything uses 3D models. But then the controls are absolutely terrible, either having to use the touchscreen as an analog stick or weird interpolated D-Pad controls. It joins Majora's Mask and a bunch of older Final Fantasy games where there's not an outright best version of the game to play.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=RWrWuXE6RHwWhat is this? Some new game? It looks kinda weird but fun and colorful. And why is Microsoft releasing games on Switch?? That screen at the end said Microsoft.

  • a trailer
  • for a 1997 game
  • with no improvements over the 1997 original
  • by itself; Banjo-Tooie not included
  • requires an expensive paid yearly subscription to access; cannot be purchased outright
  • an HD remaster was released in 2008, can still be purchased outright to this day, and physical copies were produced in 2015 via Rare Replay
  • but the remaster was exclusive to Xbox 360
  • it's 12 years since that remaster, and it did not get ported to the Switch
  • Nintendo finally rereleases Banjo-Kazooie, via emulation, after numerous reports about the Switch's N64 emulator having all sorts of major problems, like bad input lag in Zelda OoT and outright crashing and wiping saves in Paper Mario

Man, these people are such stereotypes

So why are guys bitching about shit from over 20 years ago, again?

Did you expect anything less from Nintendo's fanbase?
Shadman_Super_Soyan.jpg

I certainly was expecting the typical "mental health" cope.

THAT'S NOT WHAT I SAID YOU FUCKING RAPE FAGGOT.

I said Nintendo's GameCube-era (and DS-era) music is not as good as what they produced before and after. There was a very generic malaise over a lot of it. Some tracks were good, but for every Luigi's Mansion you had stuff like Double-Dash, Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros. et cetera. And contrasted against stuff like Metroid Prime, the deficiency in Nintendo's music production of that era is severely lacking.

It is strange because some of their best games also came out in that era, but also some of their most plain games. I think some of that was a result of Hiroshi Yamauchi's long shadow still working its way out of Nintendo as a whole.

Sonic has always had great music. It's just the gameplay, mechanics, story, characters, setting, graphics and themes that suck.
I couldn't disagree more.

Wind Waker
Double Dash
Pokemon Colosseum
Mega Man Battle Network
DBZ Budokai 2

That's just a few games I remember having some great music. A few were worse than I remember though, like Billy Hatcher. For some reason I remember it having good music but, uh, it doesn't.

I can't find the OST for LotR: The Third Age (just GBA comes up) but IIRC, it had pretty good music too.

Ahhh!! Double-Dash music makes me want to drill my ears out. So bland... so blah...

Wind Waker's OST was one of the few bright spots from Nintendo. Retro did good though!

Retro definitely is a highlight of the system, especially considering the darker atmosphere they brought wasn't too common otherwise.

But did you check out that DBZ soundtrack? It kicks a lot of ass, especially the song I linked to. After I submitted that post a few more came to mind, like Tales of Symphonia, F-Zero, and Smash Melee (Melee has one of the greatest opening themes, but the rest are mostly remixes and stuff, so that one feels a bit like cheating).

I don't deny that the GameCube had good OSTs. My issue is that Nintendo specifically was not at the top of their game in terms of soundtracks during that time period and I can't really figure out why.

Let me tell you about F-Zero GX. F-Zero GX is hard.

Hm, there's actually a lot of Nintendo games I skipped on NGC (Custom Robo, Animal Crossing, Chibi-Robo, Doshin the Giant, Pikmin 2, etc), so maybe you're right overall.

I stand by most of the ones I played though (Sunshine, Wind Waker, Star Fox Adventures, Paper Mario, and yes, even Double Dash).

About F-Zero GX, I'm a fake shitty babbie gamer, plz gimme easier modes in a remaster thx (I still like it though)

I would be happy for a remaster of F-Zero GX with a normie mode difficulty and all the arcade content in the game.

Having to not only subscribe but then only able to play with an internet connection of an emulation is just......a big mistake.

Anyway, in regards to Star Fox Adventures, the history of that is a mess. It was supposed to be a Dino Crisis game turned into something created and oromoted as Dinosaur Planet but then shenanigans turned the entire game into StarFox?

That's what these big shots want.

Quite a mess.

I forgot there was an arcade version, adding whatever that had would be a great bonus.
The AX cup is already in the GameCube version. You just have to beat every GP on master difficulty and buy the tracks with tickets in the shop. Come on get good. Or get an Action Replay.

It is a painful game. Green Plant Spiral cost me a Wavebird back in the day. Green Plant in general... those levels suck. If it isn't the obstacles it is the random fuck you hump near the end of the lap that launches you into retirement.

Animal Crossing doesn't really count since it's just ported from the N64, but my god is Chibi-Robo's soundtrack fantastic. Taniguchi really hit it out of the park, and I'm surprised more people don't talk about his music.

Beyond 3DS ports, I'd like to see new remasters of the games for the Switch, that would have been an obvious thing to do for their 20th anniversaries.

Of course for me personally while that would be cool, the N64 graphics of those games hold a lot of charm for me.

I also think it would be cool if they pulled a Link Between Worlds and actually gave us a third game in the OOT/MM style.

Star Fox Adventures really bums me out, it's such a beautiful LOOKING game, even today, but when I tried to go back and played the whole thing in 2017 I was reminded why I never finished it in 2002, it's just such a fundamentally BORING game to actually play.

One thing that struck me about the game in 2017 was just how incredibly 90s the whole game's vibe is, despite being from 2002, maybe that's holdover from the original version of the game but I feel like that also says a lot of things about 2002.

You’re misremembering it a bit. It never had any connection to Dino Crisis. It was developed as a N64 title called Dinosaur Planet, which was supposed to be the pinnacle of what Rare could achieve on the system, but it was subsequently moved over to the GameCube and rebranded into a Star Fox title. There’s some contention regarding how much Rare was forced into this. Some liked that they would have the publicity of having a beloved property attached to their system launch title (SFA was announced as a launch title when it was formally unveiled as a Star Fox game, but got delayed to the following year).

I wish there was a mode to play with original song and save functionality. Because the changes you brought up absolutely destroy the game's sense of urgency and immersion.
