I've bought the OLED model a month ago (to replace my older v2 model which will also serve as a gift for a family relative) and my personal impressions are that it's actually a pretty good upgrade for someone like me who uses the handheld functions of the console 3/4th of the time.

+ Screen is absolutely gorgeous, as expected from an OLED. It doesn't have the weird green splash when displaying dark colors as I remember on the first Playstation Vita model. Also less useless bezels with the screen size getting larger.

+ An actual kickstand instead of the sorry excuse present in the original/v2 model that was unstable and just easily snapped off. The kickstand of the OLED model runs the entire width of the console's main body and can be set to a wide range of angles. I've been using tablet mode a lot more as a result, and it's possible to make the console stands up vertically for shmup games without an additional accessory.

+ The speakers are located on the bottom edge of the console and they give better sound overall, which is a definite plus in handheld usage. Even more for the rhythm games I play regularly (Taiko no Tatsujin, Deemo, Muse Dash, etc.)

+ There is a noticeable increase of the battery life on the OLED model, compared to the v2's, when the screen brightness is set at 50% or higher, something I no longer have to worry about. But otherwise, it's essentially the same as the v2 (around 5 hours in average use).

- I highly doubt the build quality of the joycons were improved much. I accumulated over 700 hours with my v2 model within one year and I've encountered two random instances of drift that were fixed by just putting the console to sleep and resuming right after. And that's with properly taking care of my belongings, like putting the console inside a case when I'm not using it to prevent dust. I might get the same experience with the new ones in the future.

- Literally no benefits of the new model for anyone who plays Switch games mainly docked in

I can’t wait to buy this game tomorrow after waiting for two years to get it. This will be a fun early Christmas gift for sure.
One of my favorite games I've played this year.

What other big releases do they even have for December? Nothing from Nintendo themselves.
There aren't a lot of notable Switch releases for this month to be fair:
-Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain (mainly a family party game)
-Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (western release got delayed to January 28th but the japanese version is multi-language for those who are impatient)
-Deathsmiles I & II (japan-only for now but contains english text support)
-Cotton Rock 'n Roll (another nippon release but also supports english language. It'll be called as "Cotton Fantasy" in the west later this winter)

Who the fuck cares about the difficulty? If it's a fun game it's a fun game.

Speaking of which, they've got Mortal Kombat 11 on sale. But Mortal Kombat 11 Ultiamte is not on sale. However I can get Mortal Kombat 11 and the Ultimate Add-On pack for significantly less than Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. So I should do that, right? I think maybe one or two skins aren't included? See this is the problem with games that go wild with DLC. I have no idea what to buy in order to feel like I got all the stuff.

I was thinking of buying Wonderful 101.

AssChain is also on the list but I feel like it'll be too weird and difficult.
As someone who has played both, my opinion is that they're equally difficult in different ways.

One thing worth forewarning is the difference in their concept of 'chapter'. That is to say, The Wonderful 101 uses the same setup as Viewtiful Joe, where the big action pieces are broken by quick breaks where you can spend the stuff you collected in the chapter to buy new abilities and customize your character, before jumping right back in for a series of high tension action sequences, which can go as far as epic boss battles where the rules are changed on you and you have to do so much stuff.

Astral Chain doesn't do that.

Each chapter has two halves, one in the police station and one in the field. The police station segments don't really have that much action going on since you're mostly reporting for duty and reacting to what the latest story beat is, with plenty of sidequests you can fulfill at the time. The field segments are where most of your action is going to happen, since this is where you eventually fight enemies and what-not.

This doesn't make it a bad game, just something you should probably take into account for buying either.

I got my switch for a very generous Christmas grift played Mario Odyssey and Hollow Knight on it and then rarely touched it again. Until No More heroes 3 where I then bought that from the eshop, which ended up being such a disappointment as a Suda fan that I promptly decided to jail break my switch and now I love it. Being able to play a lot of exclusives, ports, and emulation on the go is a big plus as a college student. My joycons got switch drift so I bought a hori split pad (I mostly play in portable mode so the lack of internal batteries is no issue). If you have an older switch model I cannot recommend jail breaking it enough a tech newbie like me could do it with just a paperclip, laptop, usb-c chord, and a micro sd card.

W101 is weird as shit.
To me The W101 is the most intuitive kamiya game. The universal combos across each weapon were a lot easier to wrap my head around then the dozens upon dozens of Bayo 1 combos that all do seemingly the same thing (not saying bayo 1 is bad just that it doesn't grab me like the W101.)

I'm not particularly good in action games (as in, not pulling off long telegraphed combos and have the best reaction time) but Astral Chain was actually pretty simple to play but it still gives enough options if you want to get crazy. It's also paced well enough to enjoy the police investigations & side-jobs (like apprehending criminals on the run), platforming/puzzles sections in the dimensional alien grid or stealth stages in-between the action moments.

I personally recommend Xmorph Defense (Complete Edition is at 3€ with all the DLCs) and The Talos Principle Deluxe Edition (6€) if you guys are looking for something really cheap on the eshop. I assume there might be more titles in sale tomorrow.

The game doesn't offer any challenge at all except for one single area (and no, its not the ending boss.) It would have been more fun if the pinball areas (its a pinball-vania game) took a little more skill/thinking and couldn't be brute forced by just flipping randomly. Thats also why I complained about the bad physics, fwiw.

I have no idea if The Wonderful 101 is a good game or not, since the only people who cared about it were Wii U apologists that insisted it was a hidden gem, but those are the same people that insist everything exclusive to a Nintendo console is a hidden gem and flip the fuck out at anyone criticizing their favorite games

But then it got a remaster last year, and nobody seemed to care

Its a score attack game where most of the "fun" is replaying the few levels you get to try for new high scores. Just as a warning...
