According to a possible leaked plot synopsis, it starts out in a relatively more realistic setting with the pre-SMB games like Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew before gradually working its way to the Mushroom Kingdom.
 
I think he looks fine, "he just looks off" is code for "I can't find anything bad to say about it but I still don't like it because I'm too cool to like things".

Eyes could be a touch bigger, that's really my only complaint. Do like the shirt collar, they should work that into his real design. Nice little touch.

What about mine? That he looks like Alfred E. Neuman?
 
OK. Mario Movie trailer just finished. Some quick thoughts:

1. The movie looks incredible.
2. The penguins were a cute touch.
3. The worst-case scenario for Mario's voice is true. He just sounds like Chris' character from The LEGO Movie. Everyone else's voice is....surprisingly decent. Even Keegan as Toad, which is a shocker.
4. Just the one Power Star? Although this could be like the Sonic movie, like it's a Grand Star or something.

Overall, actually better than expected (again, aside from Mario's voice).

Most of the gags felt like they had built in laugh/applause timings, but since they weren't funny enough it felt overly slow, particularly the Bowser/penguins scene. Like a good comedy film just keeps going, it doesn't wait .5 seconds for you to get the reference or go "ahh HEEELLL naw."
 
Generic and safe with the exception of the slightly uncanny Mario design and lack of original voices. It's okay though. Expected worse, hoped for better.
 
It was about as good as I expected, which is saying something. I like everything about how Bowser is portrayed, though Kamek’s voice will take some getting used to. The humor wasn’t laugh-out-loud funny, but good enough for a teaser. No complaints about Toad, and the last scene with Luigi looks promising.

As for Mario himself… I didn’t like the voice at first, but it’s grown on me. Especially in the last bit of dialogue, you can definitely hear a bit of a Brooklyn accent, just not as exaggerated as the cartoons. I still don’t like Mario’s baby face though. The facial proportions need to be a bit bigger, and the eyes a bit more oval-shaped.

It’s probably multiple stars to give it a 64/Galaxy connection. I can’t imagine the weak-ass penguins were guarding the one and only power star.
