I think Nintendo 64 games in general have aged really poorly. I played Zelda on my N64 for the first time in about 15 years back around 2018, and the game being locked at 20 frames a second was pretty jarring until I adjusted and got used to it again after a couple hours. I find many games on SNES and Genesis more playable today than N64 games due to things like muddy textures, the short draw distance and framerate issues.
Yeah, terrible draw distance is the last thing you need in a flight sim.

But the devs worked with what they had and people liked it because they weren't any better alternatives, at the time.

The Switch pro is looking less like a mid generation upgrade and it's looking more like a mandatory upgrade, they're apparently not keeping the same card slot and the guts are entirely different. They've released a patch where the dock can upgrade firmware, but that may be linked to a possible console only version for the west. I mean Portable mode fucking sucks for RPGs, I've only been averaging 8-10 hunts in Monster Hunter before the battery shits itself and it needs to be charged, it's nigh useless. Xenoblade I didn't even bother taking it off the dock.

I wonder if it's going to have the same effect as the wii-u where everyone thought it was an upgrade instead of a brand new console?

And you know Breath of the Wild 2 is going to be a launch title.

goddamnit

i mean sure i'll still try to grab it and save up for it, but ffs.

My fear is the new card slot is like the one the Upgraded 3ds had but only like 3 games ever used it, and you didn't need it in the end. They're saying 2022 which would put at at BOTW2's supposed release date.

The problem with the switch is that it has a ton of bullshit hardware decisions, so it's looking like they're really streamlining shit for the next one.

man i hope the next switch doesn't fuckin become totally incompatible with the standard current switch carts

Where have you heard about his? I'm not doubting it I'm just curious.

There's a bunch of different takes you can find in videos and articles like on Spawnwave and other daily uploads but it's sounding like the new switch is going to significantly up the power because they want it comparable to the competition. I don't think actual 4k is going to be possible but they're just going to scale it up and call it 4k. The fact that they have to consider both docked and portable mode may wind up being an issue because you're going to need one hell of cooling system. We already know that there are new joycons in the works so them making the system bigger isn't out of the question because it already can't fit into a pocket and needs it's own bag.

The switch already has issues with last gen stuff taking eons to port due to it being non-standard and it has the worst storage out of any of the systems, so the new switch is really going to have to fix a lot of hardware stuff all in one go as well as upping the base performance. The dock firmware patches are the interesting thing because it may allow it to have storage in the future.

We're 4 years in on Switch. Wouldn't it be really dumb to only release an upgrade at this point?

We're definitely looking at brand new system time
When stuff is reaching 10 fps because a moderate amount of enemies appear on screen, it's really showing just how weak the hardware is.

Stuff like Metroid Prime 4, Bayonetta 3, BOTW2, all of those will likely be launch year titles. Looking at this year's line up it's incredibly weak which usually means next year's won't have anything until the new console launches.

Trade in your older Switch for a beefier Switch. I would hope that's the case.

People hyping up the hypothetical Pro model aren't the average Nintendo fan who will just play Nintendo games regardless of the technical prowess or the weeb rapefugees from the old pre-California Playstation. The rumors have been going since 2018 or 2019 and you cannot help but become sceptikal when it's always the same of refrain of "it's really happening this time!".

And I'm pretty much confident that Nintendo is going to milk the Switch for another 3 or 4 years down the line. 2020 was the console's strongest year (mainly thanks to corona-chan) and 2021 has been predicted to be even stronger than that (with more software releases backing it up).

Considering that it's still the port machine, it could really use an upgrade. Just look at the framerate for Republic Commando.
No amount of upgrade would essentially fix a broken port by Aspyr (Republic Commando) and any lazy port from a western company meant to be just a quick cash-in. It's just a small band-aid over a bigger problem within the industry.

The Switch pretty much proved it can even handle PS4 titles as long as the dev team behind the port make the actual effort to optimize the software, like it's the case for Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Densha de Go!, Dragon Quest 11 S, Dragonball Fighter Z, etc. There is also the example of MH Rise which proves that a engine tailored for a specific hardware will do absolute wonders.

That said, nobody should get a console, even less so a handheld, if screen resolution and framerate speeds are one's highest priorities. A gaming PC is for those needs instead.

I'm kind of hoping the Switch pro has a perma docked console version much like how the switch lite was portable only and cheaper.

portable mode blows and I can never concentrate on games in public settings because shit is always going on around you and you could get stabbed if you're not paying attention.
I never got stabbed or anything even though I sometimes played Minecraft on my laptop in public. And I played various games countless times in public on my phone. I guess that's a benefit of living somewhere without rapefugees on the loose. Do you live in a place that's infested with rapefugees?

Only Gamestop ever did that.

Nintendo never ran a promotion like that themselves.
I recall how back in 2001 or so you could trade in your gameboy color for a gameboy advance, I always thought that was a promotion nintendo themselves were running, Guess it was just that chain of toy stores.

This, I am really tired of people blaming ports that run like dogshit on the hardware. Companies are lazy and don't optimize their shit anymore, if you develop with the switch or any console in mind you can get good performance, problem is they develop the games for ps4/xbox1 then port from those doing the bare minimum. And 10 fps? Damn they really need to get harsher with their quality control.

Never gonna happen. Companies these days have a good scam going in the fact that anyone buying games/consoles brand-spanking new as soon as come out are basically free beta testers for said companies. It's why online demos for fighting games exist (see SFV and the new guilty gear). Why pay professionals that have been in the scene for a long time and know wtf they are doing and what to look out for when you can just have a bajlillion players play your broken shit and report it to you? The problem with this is that half the players are casuals that will go "oh this game/console is DA BESTEST!!!" even though it might have one or more MAJOR game-breaking glitches or issues.

Four years would be a really short lifecycle for a console. Even the Wii U got five years before Switch came out and it was selling like shit. Something closer to six or seven years is a normal lifecycle in our current era, though Nintendo is all fucked up because Switch was kind of released in the middle of the competition's lifecycle.

*Edit* I thought about it though, and besides the Wii which got an extra year, Nintendo has released a home console in North America every five years like clockwork since the SNES. SNES and N64 kind of came late and Wii U came early compared to the other consoles in their respective generations. Maybe they will have something new out the door by next year.

That still leaves 99% of ports being pieces of shit and if they're reliant on SSD to unfuck the load times, get ready for 5 minute clip shows where you're not sure if the game froze or not. They'll milk the switch by maybe having the new one be Backwards compatible, but you have to pay the $400 tax to fund Shiggy's retirement fund if you want a year of new games.

Were people finally expecting Koei a company with studios with a decades long history of cutting corners to finally turn over a new leaf because Nintendo released a system that wasn't absolute ass? Games aren't expensive enough to demand competency, just buy the zelda themed dynasty warriors, and maybe next time you'll get the GOOD Korean team.

maybe

not to mention Koei is known for games that flood the screen with moving enemies and whatnot.

That's literally the only thing they do at this point. And you can pay 75 bucks in DLC to have even more enemies flood the screen once you're done with the main game.
