Been gaming since the 90s, if not the 80s. Every time, the winner of a generation or two would get egotistical and try to dictate terms to the customer, then get slapped down. We saw it was the PS2 > PS3. Xbox 360 > Xbone. And yes, Nintendo > Nintendo multiple times. One of the DS consoles flopped until a price cut and direction change. The WiiU was a disaster after the mega success of the Wii. Now Switch > Switch 2.It just seems like they've completely lost steam as far as being the powerhouse they used to be. I don't understand why Nintendo and the Japs in general have gotten so bad at making games/gaming now what the hell happened.
Exactly. It also runs the risk of a Sonic style split fanbase. The "gen x" fanbase who grew up with Link to the Past, Mario World, Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time as "the greatest games ever". Then there's the "zoomer" generation who grew up on Wii and 3DS. For them, Zelda is Breath of the Wild, Mario is Odyssey and 3D World.I do see Nintendo is on a bit of a ticking clock. The hardcore fans are skewing older and older and kids are more attracted to PC gaming based on watching streamers. Their characters and IP are still iconic and recognizable though and I see them trying to leverage that with the mario and zelda movies but all the nintendo fanboys are chasing a dragon from when they were ten year olds. If the next crop of kids arent getting hooked on mario and zelda early then they will probably move on to other stuff.
So while they're mostly on the same page. I think we're slowly starting to see a split with games like Bayonetta having a mixed reaction from Nintendo fans (though that's in part because of the lack of exclusivity for some games). I doubt younger generations are going to care about F-zero or Starfox since they're basically dead franchises.
