Not sure how the hell Smash fans view PG partnering with Nintendo in an official capacity as "the thing that saves the competitive smash community". Nintendo has a long track record of going to competitive communities and saying "hey, why don't you stop that and we'll officially partner?", only to then drop their end of the deal or create an alternative so shitty that it's basically sabotaging itself. I bet they'll do that again here. The partnership will go nowhere and if they're lucky, PG will eat all of the blame for it.
It's Smash, the autism will always be prevalent in that community.
Can confirm. Smash community is absolutely fucked to the core. I've been involved to an extent since I do genuinely enjoy high-level competitive play and all of the stuff that goes into it. But that familiarity with the community really just made the issues all the more prevalent to me. I also have a lot of takes that half of the smash community fucking hates so I must be doing something right.
The issue with the smash community is the parasocial relationships, the nepotism, and how all of the big names are impulsive and immature. It's not uncommon for top players, tournament organisers, streamers and general figureheads to all be friends with eachother, and to cover eachother's asses. The smash community itself idolises top players too, with many of them becoming egocentric (the most infamous being ESAM, I'll provide more info if others are interested). Whenever a big controversy comes out, it's more of a witch hunt than just deciding "how was this allowed to happen" and working for constructive change.
They also
fucking hate Technicals, who they view as taking advantage of the stuff going on for clout, and being a dishonest actor. His content has a total ban on the big smash subs (though responses to his content is fine). He's a bit of a dramacow admittedly, but he's exposed some big stuff. Including how the community just casually let Nairo off the hook for having sex with a minor. Like or hate him, he's bringing info to the table, and I can't stand it when people just dismiss perfectly fine info because it came from the wrong person.
To end on a bit more of a funny note. If you type "go boxing ring" into ESAM's chat, you'll get instabanned. He's one of those types that are trying to be hyper-woke to atone for their edgy past, and the phrase is a reference to a previous stream where he said "nigga go boxing ring faggot" back in his edgy days.
