I've always maintained that if nintendo ever had some soul. it died with Satoru Iwata, but lol this is just flooring the gas towards the endgame. Let's have another Susan Wojnicki-type as president and add a sales guy as ceo. Cannot wait for the fireworks.

Honestly, Sakurai is the only person who's still has any personality left when it comes to the company's presentations. Since everything else is either an blatantly obvious cash grab or the standard 7 minute presentation.

But even then, Smash is gradually turning into shit for one reason or another.

Yoshiaki Koizumi is great every time.

It's burnout. He legit doesn't want to make Smash anymore after exhausting all the things he can do with the franchise past slapping some more characters into the roster.

Which he has every right to feel that way. After the nightmare of getting specific characters like Cloud and Sora, I'd fucking bounce too. If there's one thing that can ruin someone's passion and ideas is some dickhead suit in corporate making it very hard to negotiate, regardless of all the legalities that come with licensing out a character for only one game. The -VERY- rabid fanbase being the other thing that can kill any motivation and enthusiasm you had left. With something like this, you're never going to please everyone on the entire planet.

Hell, is there even still a market for Smash-like games? Haven't all the clones that came out from WB to Nick died out after the hype?

Like the rest of their franchises, Nintendo fans are fans of Nintendo, not their games, as every Smash-like, Zelda-like, kart game, and basically everything else getting poor sales on the platform shows.

It'd be interesting if they made a real bare bones, back to the basics Smash game with just 10 or 12 characters, a dozen or so items and a dozen or so stages and just made it like, really, really refined and balanced. Maybe put a robust single player adventure in there to pad it out. The community would probably reject it, though.

Aside from the shovelware that quickly died off, there's really isn't. Well, aside groin the stuff that the other companies shit out; but those technically aren't an Smash clone. But even then, it's just at least three different series.

That would require a competent fighting game developer, which Sakurai has proven over and over that he is not.

The WB game killed itself with microtransactions and never had a legit plan beyond "ultra instinct shaggy" memes.
The first Rivals of Aether was successful and has a thriving workshop.

He doesn’t like sequels in general. If he had it his way, his Smash career would have ended at Melee. Brawl feels like the perfect final with him being able to create the big Smash title that time restrictions impacted Melee from being.

You can tell with Smash 4 he was losing steam beyond wacky characters. He mostly just continued on because Iwata kept thrusting him into development hell, often times with Nintendo announcing Smash before even consulting him then just dropping it on him afterwards.

There is, big issue though is that every Smash-like is just a Melee dick-riding session which kills off casual players. The constant need to pander to the vocal minority is exactly why they fail, and arguably why Sakurai tells them to fuck off. The games lack that soul Smash had, the extra content that made it a full package and gave reason to play beyond “get good.” Smash was never meant to be a real fighter, something none of the clones understand.

Personally, I stand by the best clone being Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL. It was the only one to truly go the extra mile and have fun side content like a Subspace mode.
