So I noticed Nier didn’t have a general thread, only individual threads for replicant and automata. Oh and how that disappointed me as a fan of this franchise! This is where you can discuss the Nier games, along with the parent series, Drakengard.

Drakengard/Drag-on Dragoon could probably stand for a remake if they bothered fixing a bunch of shit. Final Boss fight for 3 is awful because it has a huge music based QTE where the screen blacks out at the last note just to fuck with you and you have zero visual queues when to press. And if you miss you have to do it all again.

1 and 2 are kind of rough even back when they were released. They were not ranked high on the PS2 in terms of quality, especially since the PS2 had a shitload of stellar rpgs.

Now Original Nier be it either Papa Nier or Brother Nier was rough in many palces but it was a far more better game than any of the Drakengard games. Battles were more focused in terms of mechanics and while you did have a switching of camera perspectives to 2D you didn't really have the sudden introduction of strange new mechanics and gameplay type changes. However it had tedium out the wazoo for specific things like rare drops.

Neir Automata further fixed what was established in Nier and streamlined a ton of things while also improving the combat, the quests were better than the first game and you were given more means of traversal instead of just needing to roll everywhere. I didn't care for the shmup shit personally but that's just a slight blemish on a pretty good game.

The Nier remaster is probably the best version of the original game. Did they change some of the visual shit? Yes, but the new weapon types added helped to mix things up and reduced the grinds that were present in the original. Visually it's missing those rough edges that the original had and seems to take itself more seriously since Nier is now a popular thing.

In Automata, I remember getting to the point of the final battle for endings C/D and being blithely unaware that this was in fact the final battle and not a midway point.

I've meant to get the original Nier game over a decade ago but not even two years after it was released it became a cult hit and was already impossible to find physical copies for, and I don't know if it's available digitally on 360 or PS3

Are the changes in the Nier remaster significant enough to make it worth buying if I already own a copy of the original?

The DLC if you never played it is now part of the base game.
The new weapons can make things easier
Everything has a new coat of paint so everything has had it's level of detail increased

But other than that it's the same game.

A new ending was also added (ending E ) that better connects the game with nier automata. Reaching that ending will also allow you to play a new piece of story that was not in the original game, and that kinda change the gameplay (i don't want to spoil but it is really worth it).
There are also new characters, new side quests and a new chapter (that leads to a new boss fight which has it is absolutely stunning music).

Other than an added new ending and content, replicant had a lot of technical improvements too. The gameplay is vastly better and feels smoother.

I think Drakengard 2 was underrated. It had gameplay that wasn't complete shit like the original and the plot had some cool ideas that will never be explored in modern gaming.
I haven’t played DG2, but I think a lot of people hate it just because it wasn’t made by Yoko Taro. Kinda like how there’s a lot of metal gear fans that hate any MG game not made by Kojima just because it’s not made by Kojima. Not saying DG2 is even a good game, but DG1 can’t be much better, right?

Although Taro fanboyism is kind of. Akey factor as to why DG2 is looked down upon, i think what makes most people dislike it is how safe and generic it feels to the first game. While I don't think 2's plot is as bad as most people make it out to be (save for some dumb moments like Nowe not telling his childhood friend the evil general guy poisoned him for example) there was something unique about the risks the 1st game took, like having the main characters be a bunch of awful people, an ending that is a jab at those incest harem games, or an ending that's just an evangelion rip off. Granted, unique doesn't always mean good, which is why i understand the people that like 2's more coherent but boring plot, and speaking of the gameplay, although it is a direct upgrade from the 1st game, it still isn't anything to write home about, which isn't a good thing considering all the great action games the PS2 had.

Aside from everything else that's been mentioned, the OST for the remake is worse than the original, and there's no way to revert to the original OST, in case that's a dealbreaker for you.
What's next for the Nier franchise?
The JAV Yoko Taro always wanted to make. Being serious, he said NIER was done, so I hope his next game is Drakengard 4.

I never thought we would get to this point from an edgy hack and slash made by a guy who wanted to mock RPG cliches.

Part of the issue was they wanted to originally make it about aerial dragon combat but they saw how successful Dynasty Warriors was and wanted in on it; the team was also inexperienced and more so in the action department.

They were told to tone everything down because he original was so bleak and edgy that it almost didn't get approved. They nixed the style of the first game's soundtrack because of negative feedback, a shame because I liked how bizarre it was.

Is that what he meant because I heard that he's just not interested in making direct sequels.

I just bought the Nier remake and I read you could revert the soundtrack to the original after getting ending A.
