Genuine question for this thread. I really liked Nier Automata and am currently grabbing games for the PS3, should I grab Drakengard 3, or is it extremely different?

Drakengard is a lot different from Nier, and they’re only loosely connected. There are some references to Drakengard in Nier though. The Watchers are mentioned, or at least shown in Nier Automata. It’s a fun game though and I recommend it.

I'd say you should emulate, mostly because drakengard 3 on the ps3 is an unoptimized mess afaik and sometimes can run at single digit fps, which you can avoid if you have a good enough PC.
As for gameplay, yeah, its vastly different. Drakengard is more of a musou like game divided in levels where you fight huge groups of enemies with the occasional midboss and boss, as well as some rare shooter sections similar to starfox.
Also the devs made some really important prologue DLC that lets you play and know more about the intoners, so if you don't wanna pay for that theres another reason to play it on PC if you can run it.

Drakengard 3's ground combat is just your average budget hack and slash. It's fun at times. Remember to turn off blood splatters. The aerial sections are fun when they aren't running at 1 frame per second. Seconding the suggestion to emulate the game. Playing it on original hardware isn't a great experience.

The DLC is even less optimized. Remember one of them having a ground dragon section that ran below 10 FPS. This game is so unoptimized, it has to be performance art. My boy Decadus gives it a "Ooooh yes~ Such terrible nausea~" out of 10.

If there's any game that's in desperate need for a remaster, it's the original Drakengard.

Definitely. Like a lot of games of that era it’s hard to play today. Drakengard 3 is very easy to get, but the first two aren’t.

Even if it wasn't hard to play, it's fucking terrible to play. You can tell from the gameplay and mechanics that it's definitely a relic of its time and of inexperienced game developers (Yoko Taro himself mentioned how amateurish the game was due to Cavia's novelty). This is ignoring the grinding too, which is on MMO levels of bad. A remaster, or better yet, a remake can turn a really good story and a horrendous game into a really good rerelease.

Remaking the originals to be playable will ruin them. It's like an accidental piece of art where the awful combat only enhances the message of how war isn't glorious, and you are just bullying creatures weaker than you.

With the fact that Caim is meant to be a sadistic character, I think a combat improvement could help the game quite a bit.

Although make ending E even more frustrating just to troll newfags. It’d be like the final song on steroids.

I am gonna get the switch version because those Japanese outfits look absolutely fantastic.

Youtube recommended me a video essay about Cavia and for some reason I watched it

Hopefully Squeenix remakes Drakengard 3 at one point to look and play more like final fantasy. DG3 is a guilty pleasure for me, but it’s absolute dogshit. Maybe if they made the game look like the intro which all the budget went to.

So I was going to start a new topic but the forum software informed me that one already exists.

Basically, all I know about the series is I've seen Weird Video Games videos on the original Drakengard.

It's the longest WVG episode yet, coming in at two hours (most of his videos are thirty minutes or less).

Part One
Part Two

Basically it sounded like this is the reason I don't like Square-Enix games or modern Japanese storytelling most of the time, but there are things I'm curious about. And since most of the NieR and Drakengard series is on hardware I've never had access to.... yeah... does the series continue being this insane?

Also, what exactly ARE the Watchers? This video briefly mentions them but like, they're kinda glossed over. All I remember is you're not allowed to sculpt them.

Nier and Nier Automata are two of my favorite games because they do a lot of really interesting, experimental things with gameplay and story and because the soundtracks are some of the best video game music I've ever heard. In Automata, there is an entire 8-bit version of the soundtrack that plays when you hack into machines, which involves a little twin stick shooter mini game. The games are very loosely connected so you can start with the latest. And none of the games were developed by Square Enix, they were just the publisher but since you aren't a fan you may be interested in knowing that the Square Enix CEO is a boss in Automata.

I’d recommend playing Nier Automata and Nier Replicant but the Drakengard games are really, really fucking bad. I’ll admit that I’ve had a bit of Stockholm syndrome but the Drakengard games are objectively awful games, while the Nier games are very well made and polished.

I'd like to see a Drakengard 3 remaster because man is that game ever a technical mess. It runs at an average 15 fps capping at around 20 and has draw distance so low that giant fucking castles don't pop in until they are five feet away.

And this is on the fucking PS3.

Drakengard 3 is a game about killing Zero's sisters. Each sister has a fetish and a male sex slave disciple. Except Three. Three is a psychotic asexual. Four is a virgin. Her disciple spends the entire game moaning suggestively over anything related to pain.

The disciples are actually doves. The sisters are Zero's children. The flower in her eye made them after she attempted suicide. One doesn't have a disciple, so her brother(also named One) took on that role.

I DID say all I knew about the series was that video I linked, right?

Cuz you're acting like I know who "Zero" is. My first thought was actually that you meant the red guy from Megaman X, and I was like "he had sisters?"
