Amid repeated protests during the playing of the national anthem over the past two seasons, the NFL on Wednesday passed a revised policy that mandates players and team personnel present on the sideline “shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.”

The revision, which was unanimously agreed to, allows players who would not wish to stand to remain in the locker room. Also under the revision, each franchise will have the power to issue their own policies, which could include fines for players protesting the anthem, under the conduct detrimental provision of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The league also now has the power to fine any franchise that has personnel that does not stand or "show respect" while present on the sideline for the anthem.

The policy was passed Wednesday in Atlanta at the spring league meeting.

The NFL Players Association has already taken issue with the policy, which was reached without the union present.

The new policy reads in full below:

POLICY STATEMENT

The 32 member clubs of the National Football League have reaffirmed their strong commitment to work alongside our players to strengthen our communities and advance social justice. The unique platform that we have created is unprecedented in its scope, and will provide extraordinary resources in support of programs to promote positive social change in our communities.

The membership also strongly believes that:

1. All team and league personnel on the field shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

2. The Game Operations Manual will be revised to remove the requirement that all players be on the field for the Anthem.

3. Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the Anthem has been performed.

4. A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

5. Each club may develop its own work rules, consistent with the above principles, regarding its personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

6. The Commissioner will impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

This was an anti-bullshit measure to keep advertisers and team owners happy. Don't like it? The player is the one who voluntarily signed up to work for a billion-dollar entertainment industry and make more in 5 years than 99% of the fans will see in a lifetime, the cries of "unfair" are muted by the pile of money they seem to be coming out from under......

What a bunch of gay bullshit. They should have fined Tim Tebow under these rules, if this has anything to do with reality. Frankly, if I were an NFL player, I would just never, ever show up for the singing of the National Anthem, one of the dumbest, gayest songs ever written.
You are just mad that the song is about defending Baltimore.

Also, we should change the anthem to Louie, Louie.

Battle Hymn of the Republic is the best US themed patriotic song. Just try to kneel to that. You will stand erect (in both the platonic and sexual sense) and find your arm saluting by itself.

An R&B song turned rock and roll that mentions Jamaica? Sounds like a darkie plot tbh.

They're obviously scared of the XFL.
Didn't Vince or a rep of the XFL say that players would be forced to stand during the anthem as well?

Back in the 80's when Seattle was a working-class city (pre-invasion of California douchebags) a local comedy tv show almost got the state anthem changed to it as a goof.

It has since become an unofficial state anthem and always turns up at Washington sporting events.

I hadn't even thought of that, although it's a good point. Nobody should die defending Baltimore. It should be razed to the ground, really.

Getting worked up over national symbols is gay. But if your employer says you've got to stand at attention for a stupid tune or you're going to get NJP'd, then that's what you're payed to do. Same with the NFL. If they say stand or you're fined/fired, then that's what you do or you get another job. This whole thing only started because that Kapernick tool was being a sulky bitch, and when he got called out on it he stumbled into a "cause".

Fuck professional sports, fuck the athletes, and fuck the fans.

I've often said that we need more parity in sports, so why not cut off every NFL player's legs? Then they'd all be the same speed and solve the kneeling during the anthem issue too. Two birds, one chainsaw.

Let it never be said that I am not a problem solver.

It could violate collective bargaining agreements. But really, these millionaire sportsball players have their own lawyers so they can make that argument themselves. They can simply not show up on the field.

But frankly, even if I were a white guy and a sportsball player, and had to make that call, I'd refuse to show up for the anthem, even if I ordinarily would have stood up for it, just to side with my teammates over management. Someone who sides against their own team is shit, and I am pretty sure that this bullshit play by the NFL is going to backfire for exactly that reason.

The NFL can go eat shit as far as I'm concerned.

(And incidentally I think this kneeling shit is fucking retarded but that's completely not the issue.)

It's news articles like these, where i really miss the salt mine.

I am fairly neutral on this subject, but if salt can be gained of it, please proceed.

Dude, running the table isn't an accomplishment if you're a tryhard about it.

I’m betting this is ass covering because orders for season tickets are low. So now they’re trying to court back all the people who burned their season tickets last year and vowed never to buy again.
