Amid repeated protests during the playing of the national anthem over the past two seasons, the NFL on Wednesday passed a revised policy that mandates players and team personnel present on the sideline “shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.”

The revision, which was unanimously agreed to, allows players who would not wish to stand to remain in the locker room. Also under the revision, each franchise will have the power to issue their own policies, which could include fines for players protesting the anthem, under the conduct detrimental provision of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The league also now has the power to fine any franchise that has personnel that does not stand or "show respect" while present on the sideline for the anthem.

The policy was passed Wednesday in Atlanta at the spring league meeting.

The NFL Players Association has already taken issue with the policy, which was reached without the union present.

The new policy reads in full below:

POLICY STATEMENT

The 32 member clubs of the National Football League have reaffirmed their strong commitment to work alongside our players to strengthen our communities and advance social justice. The unique platform that we have created is unprecedented in its scope, and will provide extraordinary resources in support of programs to promote positive social change in our communities.

The membership also strongly believes that:

1. All team and league personnel on the field shall stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

2. The Game Operations Manual will be revised to remove the requirement that all players be on the field for the Anthem.

3. Personnel who choose not to stand for the Anthem may stay in the locker room or in a similar location off the field until after the Anthem has been performed.

4. A club will be fined by the League if its personnel are on the field and do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

5. Each club may develop its own work rules, consistent with the above principles, regarding its personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

6. The Commissioner will impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.

And then the salt flowed.

And if you don't like it, maybe you should start your own Football league.

What a bunch of gay bullshit. They should have fined Tim Tebow under these rules, if this has anything to do with reality. Frankly, if I were an NFL player, I would just never, ever show up for the singing of the National Anthem, one of the dumbest, gayest songs ever written.

I couldn’t give a shit either way, but I guess this is the only option considering every time a person kneels, it holds up a livestream for 30 fuckin’ minutes while the streaming service jerks off about how brave they are

Fucking France has a cooler anthem than the US. Think about that.

I doubt such an attempt could ever surpass the infamous salt that followed from Donald Trump's rigorous battle with the NFL to create the spring football league USFL. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Football_League
Really though who could blame him. I was just as frustrated when the NFL went international with bullshit teams like the “Nova Scotia Rough Riders”, the “Toronto Swamp Donkeys”, and the “San Francisco 49ers”.

Note: National anthem during NFL wasn't a policy until 2009.

THANKS OBAMA!

Literally, THANKS OBAMA!

Kneeling during the National Anthem isn't a big deal. It's neither brave or unpatriotic. It literally doesn't matter and it definitely shouldn't be worthy of a fine.

Yeah I disagree with this ruling. Personally I’ll stand for the anthem, but what makes America pretty cool is being able to choose whether or not you stand. The whole “I disagree with what you say but will defend it” bullshit. It’s their choice to do it, that’s fine, Expressing ideals without getting tossed into the gulag is nice. I dunno, there’s not really a black or white answer. Though I feel as though most people don’t give a shit and just wanna watch the game.

The NFL was losing revenue and dropping in ratings. Instead of focusing on what’s really the culprit - over-saturation, shitty primetime matchups, terrible refs, too many commercials - they pointed to this. Sure, a bunch of people were turned off about this but it’s not the quick fix to bring in the Benjamins. The NFL product, since the mid-2000’s (what a coincidence that’s when Roger Goddell was made Commish) has gone downhill slowly but surely. Mark Cuban of the NBA predicted this downfall years ago and he was laughed at. Somewhere right now he’s laughing while his Dallas Mavericks tank season after season, and he’s still raking in cash.

BUT, it was aggravating having a bunch of outlets focusing on who knelt and who didn’t. For heaven’s sake ESPN would have a front page article on game day about it instead of providing what the fans really wanna see: millionaire fat guys giving each other concussions. They, and others, wanted to fuel the hate fire to get more clicks. I pay damn good money to see obese black guys hurt each other and that’s what I wanna see god damn it.

The damage has been done. This is the same league that told the Dallas Cowboys they couldn't wear stickers on their helmets as a tribute to the five cops killed by a BLM supporter and threatened to fine another player for wearing 9/11 memorial cleats.

It’s safe to say that their more patriotic fan base is thoroughly pissed off.

My Country Tis of Thee is much more worthy of an anthem tbqh. It has a better tune and even if it rips off the UK's anthem, it's got an infinitely better message behind it. I mean, come on, which would you rather sing? About how awesome it is to be free or do you want to sing about how great some inbred slacker is just because, by mere chance, they were the product of the previous set of inbred slackers from another huge line of inbred slackers.

More on topic, unless the Patriots aren't getting their shit kicked in like they deserve, I don't give a rats ass about some over commercialized and over regulated show of a bunch of rich meatheads concussing each other over a ball.
