It's the end of an era for Netflix. While the service has long been praised for its total lack of ads and commercials, Netflix is reversing its course on the matter. On Tuesday, Deadline reported that Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings said that ads will soon be incorporated into the service.

Hastings' comments come shortly after Chief Product Officer Greg Peters acknowledged that there would be differences in pricing for subscriptions in different territories. Both Hastings and Peters discussed the current state of Netflix, and its future, during the company's first-quarter earnings call, which was posted to YouTube on Tuesday. During the interview, the CEO noted that they will begin to implement advertising on Netflix in the "next year or two."

"One way to increase the price spread is advertising on low-end plans and to have lower prices with advertising," Hastings said. "Those who have followed Netflix know that I've been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription." Even though he has been against the incorporation of advertising in the past, he acknowledged that this would be a necessary step for the streaming platform. He also said that this would be a positive for Netflix subscribers, as it will give them "consumer choice" and the ability to choose a cheaper subscription, albeit one with advertisements.

"But as much as I'm a fan of that, I'm a bigger fan of consumer choice," he continued. "Allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant get what they want makes a lot of sense. So, that's something we're looking at now, we're trying to figure out over the next year or two. Think of us as quite open to offering an even lower." Hastings was asked whether Netflix would be testing out advertisement-laced subscriptions options before they roll it out to the masses. But, he stated, "I don't think we have a lot of doubt that it works," he said. "I'm sure we'll just get in and figure it out as opposed to testing it and maybe get in or not. … I think we'll really get in."

It's unclear when exactly Netflix will implement this change. However, as Hastings stated, it could come as soon as 2023 or 2024. Netflix would be following suit with other streaming services, such as Peacock and Disney+, that allow users to choose whether they would like to pay more in order to have an ad-free experience. The Netflix CEO did stress that there would still be an ad-free option if subscribers wish to utilize it.

Other than Squid Game and some other South Korean shows, what other Netflix Originals do we even know?

If you absolutely insist on using these services instead of pirating like a normal person, try to get a prepaid card from a country where netflix/HBO Max is cheaper like Mexico (about 50% cheaper compared to America). So long as your payment method comes from the country of origin you can enjoy the Burger version at a discount forever.
Normal people don't pirate and services like Netflix are a big reason why, at least in the US. Normal people don't even know how to pirate anymore.

Bojack Horseman, Ozark, House of Cards, Cobra Kai (Youtube Red Original), Castelvania, Dear White People, Big Mouth, Inside Job and I guess the anime they licensed the right to broadcast.

80% are shit
95% are shit if you want to take their last seasons into account with Ozark being that one 5% that eases out of the shitpile

I'm not including the anime stuff because that's not really Netflix.

cant wait to be netflix and chilling. dicking down some chick on my sofa and as im about to coom, i get some personalized ad straight to my tv.

@Kramer on the phone does AdBlock even work on YouTube? Cause I know it doesn’t work with their stupid app when I want to watch YouTube on my iPad.
it semi works, you don't see ads but it just blanks out the screen for 5/15/30 seconds instead. but at least any ads that would play during the video just get skipped. vance is a legit blocker though.

That's why Ublock Origin is better, videos start and play seamlessly.

Don’t forget Stranger Things. You know, the shit they spend $30 million an episode for. Why would they even do that to themselves, and give other shows their sloppy seconds? They’re not Marvel here.

I've been reading about video game development lately (the boring shit I do...) and this really steams me. No pun intended. Forget funding starving kids or building schools or whatever. Think of the games they could've made!

My completely tech illiterate 58 year old coworker came up to me not long ago and said he'd teach me this cool trick for watching free movies on my phone.

Proceeds to go to Google and type in 123movies.

Can't wait for torrenting to come back in vogue with Netflix and the rest of the streaming services getting greedier.

1. Rehaul the ui, remove the clumsy season tree
2. Brink back the rating system. Who cares if amy schumers show is thrown somewhere to back shelf
3. Drop the "netflix originals" branding. Start a new category "netflex pro" or whatever and just carry the top unwoke cream in it. Not even stranger things
4. Fire the current creative heads who made the current batch of crop
5. Have regular polls on which cancelled show to resurrect and give closing arcs to the already sunken cash
6. Suck my dick
7. Acquire a plex like product to help people pirate non-netflix shows easily but require the most expensive netflix account. Block piracy of netflix shows though. What's Disney gonna do? Sue? Prepare the program as home media management software
8. Release the fucking shows weekly and have on site discussion forums to create an ecosystem
9. Have 2-3 non scrubbable live tv like stream for bars playing absolutely random /tv/ tier obscure+popular but sfw stuff AND HAVE FUCKING ADS IN IT LIKE REGULAR COMMERCIALS. who's gonna outrage over that?
10. Wanna stay in news? Just propose the rumors you are considering to hire Alex Jones Show or Donald Trump for a special. Cancel the plan that never existed. Make account on gab, have an ama on 4chan. Think wild

Congratulations, Netflix. You have now reduced yourself to the same category as cable TV networks after years of being one of the biggest catalysts to the philosophy of "cord-cutting."

I remember when AMC (American Movie Classics, not the theater) added commercials. Then they stopped being a golden age movie channel. At least there's still TCM.

I feel like instead of sinking all this money into terrible series that mostly get cancelled after two seasons or less they should try to acquire more movies people want to watch. I shouldn't have to scroll through dozens of Syfy level trash films all trying to be the next Sharknado to find one good film.

Just look at Cowboy Bebop. A colossal waste of cash for something that got cancelled right away. All the get woke go broke stuff isn't helping either. And then we've got Cuties and Euphoria for the groomers.

Time to clean house and reinvent yourselves. But you won't.

Illegal streaming sites have gotten a lot better in recent times. Hell, I can even find Disney shit and you know the Rat's been guarding that like a hawk. I don't know what the solution to this would be other than "offer every movie and TV series ever made on a single streaming website that you pay a small fee per month for," And then make that small fee zero dollars.

Just report every add when they come up. It takes two thumb taps and less than 2 seconds. Immediately ends all of the ads and starts the video. If you tag enough of them as "inappropriate" you stop seeing them.

At least I hope thats why I never see ads for mobile phone games anymore ans not that they've just temporarily lulled.
