It's the end of an era for Netflix. While the service has long been praised for its total lack of ads and commercials, Netflix is reversing its course on the matter. On Tuesday, Deadline reported that Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings said that ads will soon be incorporated into the service.

Hastings' comments come shortly after Chief Product Officer Greg Peters acknowledged that there would be differences in pricing for subscriptions in different territories. Both Hastings and Peters discussed the current state of Netflix, and its future, during the company's first-quarter earnings call, which was posted to YouTube on Tuesday. During the interview, the CEO noted that they will begin to implement advertising on Netflix in the "next year or two."

"One way to increase the price spread is advertising on low-end plans and to have lower prices with advertising," Hastings said. "Those who have followed Netflix know that I've been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription." Even though he has been against the incorporation of advertising in the past, he acknowledged that this would be a necessary step for the streaming platform. He also said that this would be a positive for Netflix subscribers, as it will give them "consumer choice" and the ability to choose a cheaper subscription, albeit one with advertisements.

"But as much as I'm a fan of that, I'm a bigger fan of consumer choice," he continued. "Allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price and are advertising-tolerant get what they want makes a lot of sense. So, that's something we're looking at now, we're trying to figure out over the next year or two. Think of us as quite open to offering an even lower." Hastings was asked whether Netflix would be testing out advertisement-laced subscriptions options before they roll it out to the masses. But, he stated, "I don't think we have a lot of doubt that it works," he said. "I'm sure we'll just get in and figure it out as opposed to testing it and maybe get in or not. … I think we'll really get in."

It's unclear when exactly Netflix will implement this change. However, as Hastings stated, it could come as soon as 2023 or 2024. Netflix would be following suit with other streaming services, such as Peacock and Disney+, that allow users to choose whether they would like to pay more in order to have an ad-free experience. The Netflix CEO did stress that there would still be an ad-free option if subscribers wish to utilize it.

I'll be honest, this seems like a Walls Street Bets-type situation where I wonder if it's a good time to buy before the stock steadily rises again against all common sense. I still regret not doing so in the Spring of 2020.
Being a contrarian always pays off. Think about it. Where would people go if they didn't have Netflix?

Those crickets you hear mean you should ~~~buy the dip~~~

Something is gonna have to change in the dynamic of the entertainment marketplace soon enough
"Free" services are unsustainable. Only a subscription model can work in the long term.
YouTube only survives because it is being propped up by (((people))) who recognise its value as both a propaganda dissemination machine and an information gathering apparatus.

so only cheaper subscriptions are going to have ads?
this just seems like a slippery slope until the regular subscription has ads, then we're back to cable.
anyway, would ublock origin evade it?
if it does, just get the cheaper one and watch on that, or better yet don't and just stream illegally.
you'd be better off with a nordvpn subscription rather than a netflix subscription.

lol, lmao

Realtalk, I have no idea what got everyone so horny over The Witcher, but I'm glad CD Project Red has destroyed all their credibility with Cyberpunk, so I'll never have to hear about their shiny graphics again.
They're going to do new Witcher games.

I don't think they could even if they wanted to - They are still squarely in the "growth and customer acquisition" mindset, not the exploitation mindset. None of their leadership at any level is picked for their ability to capitalize on the available customer base. They, like so many other silicon valley darlings, are living the infinite customer growth dream and just assumed they'd have plenty of time to figure it out later.

Netflix can't make better content because of how woke companies work. This is how any conversation about it would go:

Naive fool: Okay, so about this upcoming miniseries adaptation of a Tale of Two Cities we're making...
Woke overlord: Yes? We're almost done with casting.
NF: What if we don't reimagine Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay as Black transgender lesbians?
WO: Why wouldn't we do that? Do you have a problem with representation?
NF: Well, it's just that the book is set in revolutionary Paris, so it seems out of place.
WO: It's fiction. The characters can be any race or sexuality, and representation is important. DIckens was a racist, and we don't need to carry his bigotry forward into the 2020s. Audiences are different now, and we need to be inclusive.
NF: Yes, but, well, the last 273 times we did this, the ratings were terrible. I just don't think the audience is going to like it.
WO: Well, we don't cater to racists or change our content to meet the demands of transphobes. Do you understand?
NF: Oh...um...yeah, I get it.

This has to be some kind of corporate espionage shit, Disney or Time Warner had to have somehow weaseled some saboteur in as a CEO or paid off someone on the board of directors to undermine what made netflix great.
I call this Eloping.

Fuck you Microsoft, you destroyed Nokia Mobile basically overnight and not only that, you lost to fucking Android in its infancy while having a superior mobile design that both Google and Apple now draw from years fucking later.

They don’t need to do anything shady or underhanded to sabotage Netflix, they just needed to pull their content and watch Netflix panic.

It’s funny because Cobra Kai is basically Netflix getting Youtube Red’s sloppy seconds. If it had started on Netflix it probably would’ve gotten cancelled after Season 1.
most of Netflix's "best" content is like that, You was a lifetime original and it only got huge on netflix,
They do have weird originals in the sense that they seem good at picking up shows which were popular but had no exposure, but never actually put effort into maintaining the series. I do check it every once in a while and there's no new content besides Ozark.
when you actually look at the list they really don't have that much original tv content, they put all their eggs in the film department, spent hundreds of millions on crap people forget about right after airing. its crazy how the stuff netflix says and what they spend their money on is so absurdly different. they say people love those 200+ episode sitcoms and its the most watched content, yet their median episode count of series before cancellation is less than 20. they say people loved X film yet they rarely make sequels to any of those $100 million movies they make
This could kill their company, depending on how they implement it.

People are already pissed that they hiked their prices multiple times while losing content.

The second most normies start seeing ads on their Netflix, they're going to start wondering why the fuck they pay for this instead of going with free, ad-supported streaming services.
fuck you're right. can't even air commercials inbetween episodes because that will give people time to stop binging and fuck their metrics harder. but they can't really do it during episodes because people will be mad too.
Even worse. These are targeted personalized ads

Come on that's a low blow. Even YT Red cancelled dope shows like Wayne in their first season
Wayne was just the American version of End of the ****** World right? also fun fact those stars are replacing the word Niggers not fucking.
Yeah, but Netflix isn’t competing with cable anymore, it’s competing with other streaming services, which all have way more desirable content libraries for the same cost or less.

In the “brainless content” sphere, they are competing with YouTube and Twitch, which are free to use, for the eyes of people who just want something, anything in the background while they veg out after work.
the biggest problem is that everything else you mentioned is backed by a huge company willing to let the fucking things run at a loss, Netflix doesn't have a sugar daddy which is why it has to do dumb shit like this to have revenue.

Now of course the next question is why they don't just decide to work within their means, become profitable and decide to be a Starz esque high quality streaming service? and the answer to that is 6 million jews died in the holocaust so shut the fuck up goy.
One of the worst series of decisions from a corporate giant I've seen in quite a while.

You're forgetting Facebook put all their chips in VR, a technology as silly and outdated as the powerglove. its also a trillon dollar company and has roughly 10x the capitulation of netflix and if it fails will literally guarantee a global depression.
Youtube already has more commercial time per 10 minute block than cable networks, especially on channels that also have to do their own sponsorships because YouTube keeps stealing their ad revenue.

The entire internet is getting greedier.
adblock is still free my friend.
Its so Microsoft can purchase them. Honk honk.
that makes sense, its either microsoft, tesla, or meta. Honestly hope Nvidia decides to buy them.

exactly, and if you don't go with the flow the kikes will just decide to get the payment processors or courts involved. its like how the unions won't allow illegals onto film sets. everyone on a production has to be part of the unions and if one part isn't you get fucked hard.

just read the entry. i can't believe someone would fail so much at doing their duty, its like they were scared and spineless. I think i remember hearing Steve would just post anti-apple and google comments too as if that might help the situation. could you imagine someone doing that?

In terms of their original movies Netflix also produces a lot of for lack of a better word I'll call Oscar bait even though I don't think a Netflix original has every won an actual Oscar. Pretentious boring films about global warming and how white people suck.

I've always thought it was strange to put so much time and money into that since awards do not translate into revenue. Lots of past Oscar winners were critical darlings but massive commercial failures.
