It’s a bit different since with Dale it was like if Michael Jordan died on the basketball court of a heart attack or something. The greatest to ever do it dying while doing what they loved. It’s one of two times I’ve ever cried while watching TV (granted I was 11 at the time) the other being when Greg Moore died two years earlier in 1999 at Fontana in CART. And I saw both of them happen live. Seeing my favorite Indycar and NASCAR drivers respectively die in a relatively short period of time basically made me reevaluate why I love racing and while I love stick and ball sports, nothing can match the prestige of racing of watching ordinary men do extraordinary things conquering both technology and nature. You never know when it will be your favorite driver’s last win, and you never know when it will be their last time behind the wheel. Kyle was never favorite driver and that’s mostly due to me falling out of love with NASCAR, but I always appreciated the insane natural talent he’s always had. Feels fucking surreal seeing a guy who I’ve basically watched his entire career from when he was making truck starts as a 16-year-old in 2000 and now’s he gone.
