To be fair, that happened with Mulan too in the cartoon. She had the chance to leave when Sheng said Ping wasn’t suited for war, but it had become a matter of proving it to herself that she could do it. And wanting to bring honor back to her father.

The remake doesn’t have that excuse.

I'm really torn here.
I despise Disney.
I despise China, their overlord.
But I also approve of the imprisonment and castration of Muslims, wish they'd just let the women be.
Though now that I think of it, the women are probably better off being raped by the Chinese than letting them be with their "spouses".

I remember reading this somewhere, and feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, that China has had so many wars and revolutions over the course of their history, that actual historical records and scarce and unknown. Each “revolutionary” new leaders practically erase the previous rulers history in order to make their own rule more important. As such, China can say that they have 4000 years of history, but don’t ask for any real details.

That is very simplistic reduction of what actually happened. In the violent transition between dynasties, a lot of books might be burned and a bunch of scholars put to the sword by the founding emperor of the new dynasty, but it's always been a big country with too many duplicate books and too many scholars to completely eradicate, thanks to a value system that encouraged the promulgation of a literate society. It helped a lot that they had printing presses and mass book ownership relatively early in their history, so even when entire cities got looted or razed by barbarian invasions or civil wars, nothing was ever lost for good.

Even during the Cultural Revolution, when the iconoclastic communists tried to physically destroy every cultural and historical relic of the old civilization, there was enough hidden away or taken abroad or just plain neglected by the Red Guards to survive for posterity and allow for a complete study of the old civilization by later scholars and historians.

The modern historical revisionism is very much a product of the Communist Party's attempt to craft a self-image of Chinese civilization that suits their vision for the future development of the country.
 
“There aren’t blacks or faggots in it” is not the diss on this movie that all the gamer gate relic e-celebs think it is.
 

This former Chink national reviews Mulan and compares it to the animated version.

His conclusion was that it was tailored for the Chink government and not the general population. I guess they had a Chink "advisor" that made sure the movie was acceptable to Winnie the Pooh and his cronies as several key scenes were altered to deliver a different message then the original.

So no shock it went over as well as a wet fart

A lot of millennials are delusional narcs because social media harbors cliques that will say how great you are and pat your ass forever if you make a sad enough sob story about how shitty your life is - getting grounded for smoking pot isn't as dramatic as being locked in your room and starved by your parents because mom and dad found your prescription to treat your depression and they don't want you to get better or whatever. So they revv up the helicopters and grab the participation trophies because "FUCK YOU MOM AND DAD, YOU BIGOTS, I CAN DO BETTER."

I accidentally came across late night horror movies- which gave me years-long nightmares, learned what trespassing and vandalism was, and got bullied a lot as a kid. Sure, maybe having my parents around at those times could have made my life less fucked (because they wouldn't have happened in the first place), but I know now that there was no way they could, as much as I know they tried to do as best they could- which was a fucking lot. And sometimes you just got to learn why you should never touch the stove when it's on, anyway.

I was given trophies and awards and praise, but that was because I had the opportunity to earn it and I was taught that I had to work hard to get them...and I did. My parents didn't complain about how it's not fair I didn't get the same amount of bowling trophies and patches as my teammates did during summer little league - "You're just going to have to practice more", was their reply if I or my brother pouted about it.

They did their best to protect me from bad things, but they didn't put on a bike helmet and roll me up in bubble wrap, either. And knew what the word 'No' was lol. Oh yeah, and they never used me or my brother as a prop make themselves look better (ie, "My daughter wanted to go to the BLM protest so badly, I couldn't say no! She didn't even cry when the tear gas was deployed UwU")

...Or something like that. Again, I'm not a parent, or someone who has had horrible parents or makes my parents out to be horrible, so I could be wrong.

It's definitely a product of helicopter parenting, which precedes social media.
It's often suburban parents who fear it's their duty to make their children successful by removing any hardship. it's pretty much children being raised by Karens who think they know better or are too stupid to believe any charlatan who claims to be an expert on children.

I can look past it if they only do it for once, Disney needs to cater for everyone after all, but they keep doing it, for the second third fourth fifth time! What's the point of watching it? #BoycottMulan"

This Mulan wasn't just somehow magically awesome, she had to work her ass off. The song itself even shat on her- "You're unsuited for the rage of war, so pack up go home you're through. How could I make a man out of you?"

The fact that Mulan persevered through all of that, and does actually end up becoming legitimately awesome by the end of the song (and so do the rest of her platoon for that matter. The original film saw no reason to make them all suck just to make her look better.) is really pretty damn inspirational. I'm not even a little girl, and have obviously never been one, and even I found myself being inspired watching that clip again, just from one song.... And Disney saw fit to cut all of that out of this one, because Xinnie the Poo wouldn't like it or whatever.

I hope this film fails spectacularly.

I think I love how Nu-Mulan has united everyone from any nation, creed or politics to hate it. I watched the reviews of the aforementioned Accented Cinema and TheCriticalDrinker back to back and I was sorta of surprised in how they managed to agree on pretty much everything, bit by bit, but used radically different rhetorics.
For those that do not know Accented Cinema is a former chinese national that does video essays that are pretty good while speaking like a baizo with an accent while Drinker is a scottish published writer, also very good, that is in the same overall mindset as Mauler (anti-sjwish). Both come from obvious different backgrounds and allthough both like the original they have drastically different perceptions of importance about it.
"Representation this", "Mary Sue that", yet both of these men could probably, begrudgingly, sit down and found common ground on how much this movie sucks and how fucked up it is. Cuties easily stole the spotlight in showing who is "the America that matters" but dear lord Nu-Mulan does a very good job too.
