That's the entire premise of MK1. Every character got reboot/reset with the new timeline, although I don't think anyone's redesign has been nearly as drastic, unless you count different characters wearing different hats, like Scorpion being Kuai Liang (normally Sub-Zero from MK2 onward) instead of Hanzo, but he still does Scorpion things and wears yellow so you wouldn't have any idea unless you played the story mode. Although technically those names are just titles and anyone can be Scorpion or Sub-Zero.

I want MK to die, and never be touched again. Tobias moved on from MK, and his post MK games were also failures (Tao Feng and WWE: WM21). MK Mugens with some of the worst OCs are somehow better than Woke Kombat 1, and there are Mugen MK games that just stick with MK1-3 (there's also a 2D version of MK4 if you look around).
I'm so pissed how dirty they did Shujinko in this game.
From a revered, humble, sagacious master that was one of the most OP characters in all of Mortal Kombat (killed super God Onaga btw, saving everything), to a cheap & basic sassy martial arts master that's blatantly ripping off Pai Mei from Kill Bill, he even does the same fucking "mustache flick" as him (even his fatality is stolen from KB!).
Complete character assassination of this guy, he doesn't even fucking look like him anymore, when I first saw him in the trailers, I thought he was MK1 92 Shang Tsung. Literally one of the worst re-designs I've ever seen, WHERE TF is his baggy sleeves?? Current technology would be so good for them! so many problems wrong with it, the only fan-fare they did right for him is his meditating & move stealing. Even then, his meditating is comically dumb for no reason (makes a weird face and overly-animated hand gesture when he finishes?). At least they didn't make him black or trans.
In Kung Lao's ending for MK1, it is shown that Shujinko is now a ego-fueled narcissist instead of the young impressionable student that was taught humility and respect by Bo' Rai Cho, if the evil Shujinko shit wasn't done already, I could almost forgive this ending, but him still keeping the "sassy" shit even after getting his brain-wiped from Liu is retarded. And arent kameos supposed to be nostalgia?? I remember Boon saying they were supposed to be the perfect representation of them from that era, wtf?
I also feel personally attacked as he is my nostalgia character, soooo much time playing Konquest mode as a kid, sure it was my kid autism, but I felt like I grew with this guy personally in the story mode, it truly was something special, & I haven't experienced anything else like it in a game. And then the grand-reveal that his entire life was a lie was fuckin' crazy to me, even though its pretty obvious when you replay it, especially not as a retarded child.
People shit on Shujinko too much, he's personally one of my favorite characters and portrays Earthrealm/Mortal Kombat in general perfectly, he gave me more of an outlook on how that realm is more than Liu or Lao ever could. And as I said, he solved all the shit he caused, even as a old ass man, killing the strongest character in all of Mortal Kombat (keep in mind Shao Khan poisoned Onaga to kill him, showing how powerful Onaga was, that Shao had to be a pussy and poison him.) even with literal God-powers, his ladder ending is Canon, alongside Nightwolf's and Ermac's.
He still doesn't have a fucking brutality by the way, he is the only Kameo to not have one, even after all his buffs/changes and the game being out for almost a year now.
Sad to see them gut one of the most important & powerful characters into generic "martial arts master" filler for goyslop bros to be like "OMFG HE'S PAI MEI!!!!". Its obvious they did it because they had no clue what to do with him besides grift off nostalgia bucks and repeat the "evil Shujinko" plot that's ALREADY BEEN DONE, alongside 3D era Shujinko being way too powerful for the current timeline.
Also on a side-note, where the fuck is Blaze or Taven/Daegon? They have references in the intros, despite how little they are. You would think these extremely lore important characters would have been explained more or mentioned at least once in the story? Onaga was, but not Blaze, the fucking dude who ended an entire time-line, or the children of Elder-Gods? Are they just rice farmers now, lol???
I also really fucking hope they do Onaga right, he is a relatively unexplored and unknown character that comes from an also unexplored older era of MK, alongside being credited as the most powerful character in the entire franchise.

If they really want to hype the old-fags & fix this story for the next one, they need to have the old era Onaga somehow return and fuck titan Havik's shit up taking control, then successfully doing his cut Deception ending, letting us abandon this garbage new-era and have them start fresh again or go back. But viewing the new trailer I can do a safe bet and assume Onaga is going to be a nothing burger alongside Shao's revolution, and we'll have extremely predictable infinity war/end game slop.
NRS loves to fuck everything and drains the charm of MK away time-by-time whilst Tobias has already moved on. Not a single burning passion or hunger to keep the nostalgia faithful and charming were there; and Boon is probably a soulless hack swimming in burning moolah, because he does not genuinely love MK like him back when he was still in Midway. As MK11 releases in 2019, this is where NRS falls hard.
I prefer if Shujinko is similar to Gen in Street Fighter and his entire character development in the 3D era instead of the shitty retcon Boon and Dominique tries to keep in order for it to be more “comprehensive” for newfags to get in. MK nowadays itself is a soulless cash-making machine by Boon and NRS, and it is beyond repair at its breaking point. The only good last MK that was out to me is MK9, maybe a bit of MKX. MK1 is jobber paradise now, and the only one that would pay for this trashfire are newfags, fujoshits, shills. Deception's Konquest mode is still easily the best single-player mode in any fighting game, and it kicks the shit out of any of NetherRealm Studios attempts.

That sucks, we need Taven to come back and be completely oblivious to everything going on while he just goes around beating the shit out of all the crazy weirdos who keep attacking him for no reason again. That would be a peak single-player campaign right there. Taven being a normal guy (aside from the demigod status) was one of the best things about Armageddon. People just kept popping up to suddenly fight him and give him shit while he could not care less about anything they're doing.
Honestly, I don't mind the gender swapped Cyrax and Sektor as much, because I've already accepted the fact that this is an alternate timeline, and MK1's story ending has accepted the "multiverse" way of explaining why so much shit has changed (either by Liu Kang's interference, or just natural factors exclusive to this specific timeline).
The one thing that I CAN'T accept is how they did Noob so dirty. What the fuck is that head? Why is he neon green now? Also, the guest characters are getting out of hand. I can accept a couple here and there, but at the rate they're going, the DLC will be nothing but guest characters by the time the game's ended. If this is a new timeline, we should be seeing new versions of Kano, Sonya, Jax... They're ignoring their main roster, and instead peppering people with guest characters. The expansions should be all about adding this timeline's versions of characters, not wasting spaces adding Conan or Ghostface (who don't even belong in MK in the first fucking place).

See, if it was a Sub-Zero -> Frost situation, I think a lot less people would care. I personally wouldn't. But they are just taking established characters with their looks and their abilities and affiliations and stories, morphing them into girlboss orgies, and calling it a day. Multiverse or not, the changes are weirdly radical or sanitized and inconsistent.
