It really depends on what you're fighting, tempered and arch tempered still rape but just very slightly less. How did they configure elemental damage, I feel like it's been changed?

I wound up going through the weapon trees I didn't bother to do in World because they didn't lead to max rarity weapons initially. But they seem like the only viable things to upgrade now because what was endgame in world has all the mats be from endgame stuff in iceborne.

Mind you a basic bitch iceborne weapon has like 100-150 more base damage than an endgame world weapon.
A few I've noticed have new moves like Tzi-Tzi's added jukes to his flash attack allowing him to bounce backwards quickly though you still can't stun that which has steadfast so he's still a joke.

Lucky for me I played enough of the game to make every max weapon for my 3 main trees (and a few of the bowguns) so I'm better prepared than most people for it.

As for armor I'm still using my old gear mostly. Anja only needing 2 pieces for stam cap upgrade is nice but his skills are meh. Those Barroth greaves are lit though, level 2 stun res and 4, 2 & 1 deco slots. Gonna be using those a lot from now on I think.

I'm hunting for rare pets since they upped the amount you can place down in a single space in a room from 1 to 3, and fucking Velkana keeps interrupting me in the expeditions.

I'm dying in 1-3 hits I'm not sure what kind of gear I'm going to need for him unless they've intentionally made the expedition ones with special stats. He's either room filling huge or the size of a large dog and I keep trying to kill him for crowns but he flies away after 5 minutes and doesn't return.

Someone datamined a limited quest where you're going to be facing off with an Anjanath, Anjanath Alternate, Jho, Savage jho, and Glaive in the arena map. There's a chance that they're going to fuck with their size so they could all be forced to be Super Tiny or they will all be super huge. Usually that amount of monsters has forced size extremes.

Also I'm pissed that I can't abduct Baby Aptonoths, I want one for a pet for my room.

This is the first MH game I've played and I got really into it and used to it insanely fast. It's all the fun of an mmo without the mmo imo but I wanna ask for some advice.

I'm HR89 and I just got a controller. I started with dual blades and made it a little habit to learn the basics of each weapon every other week. Right now I'm using gun lance and trying to learn charge blades. Fuckin love charge blades but do any of you have any advice or tips for gun lances? They're a little weak and slow for me probably because I'm using the bare basic combos for it but any advice is appreciated.

if you want to understand Iceborne gunlances watch this:

you need to know the difference between Normal, Wide and Long.

Hot Monkey Dick fighting preview. Also worth noting is the cats fighting with them as they've never joined in normal arena quests before. Wonder if that's a new thing they're introducing.

Hey I have to balance this game with a ton of others, so is there an advantage to the steam mini game?

Just don't bother with it unless it's full. You get a decent number of mega potions, dust of lifes, max potions and other shit each time along with the king armor spheres or the coveted celestial prints.

Fought Rajang a few times, he's a lot of fun. His turf war with Savage Jho is pretty crazy too:
Nice to finally have a monster that doesn't get booty clapped by jho every time.

Hi y'all, just got into the game after getting it last Winter Steam Sale.

I like using the Long Sword and have successfully got to mid-HR with it but am trying to diversify my playstyle into Hammers.
I know the basic combos for it but does anyone have any advice for approaching the monster with the Hammer? It always feels like I'm in goddamn pocket knife range for my hits to connect compared to the LS.

Savage Jho's bugged. had two instances where he picked up our monster we where hunting and was unable to drop him.

The monster would be free from Jho's jaws but still attached to his face. So basically in the process of trying to kill the monster stuck to his face jho wound up dying from getting hit from both attacks. He was a silver crown and this was a 20 minute time limit. Half the time we couldn't reach the target monster. But his Dragon breath would hurt the monster on his face so he was also doing damage to it.

We had roughly 1 minute and 23 seconds left by the end.

That's the risk of being a hammer bro, you're always at risk of getting vored. It's a small trade-off for all that raw disorienting power.

Look for stuff with skills that support your style: divine blessing if you tend to eat hits a lot u til you're better at seeing the attack patterns, slugger if you're on stun duty, skills that reduce stamina drain or increase recovery speed, or skills that up your damage. All work well enough.

Hammer is my main weapon of choice. Yea, your range is way shorter. You need to get super close and mainly focus on the head because that's where you're gonna get those orange colored damage numbers, plus it's adding to a KO bar that will knock the monster down when it reaches a certain threshold. So hitting a monster anywhere else is mostly a waste of time. "Can't hit the head? Clutch claw onto it instead" is a good motto to remember. Don't waste time doing minuscule damage to the tail, get in a better spot and get the head.

Part of playing the hammer is reading the monsters moves so you know how long you have to pull off a combo. My "go to" attack when approaching is to power up the hammer (hitting B/Circle while charging the hammer), and then while running, hold down the trigger like you are going to start charging it up (Trigger/R2) but immediately let loose with Y/Triangle combo that ends in the golf swing. It's one of the easiest combos to do and also hits pretty hard, and the upswing has pretty decent range, and almost every monster put it's head in a good spot to smash it at some point. After two taps of the Y/Triangle button you can also switch to hitting B/Circle and end with that combo too, I recommend this if the monster is knocked down.

Another good combo that's easy and quick is (with a powered up hammer), run toward the monster and when you get to the 2nd level of charge (you will know from the sound and the flash), let it go and you do a very quick upswing that will actually carry you forward a bit and has a tendency to induce a satisfying knock down. As a bonus, you can immediately follow this up by tapping B/Circle, and clutch claw onto the monster, even if you miss the monster with the upswing. The fact that this combo doesn't involve any slow start up move makes it a favorite of mine.

Some general advice:
  • Always hit the head
  • Always have hammer powered up
  • Use your ability to roll liberally, it will save your life. It's one of the best moves a hammer has. Use it to cancel combos, at the ends of combos (where you stand around uselessly for 2 seconds), or to get better positioning. When in doubt, roll out.
  • Only use the B/Circle combo when the monster is stunned and down, otherwise it's not worth the time since the last hit is what deals most of the damage.
  • Clutch claw is a hammers best friend. Tenderize that monster all over and your team will love you. Tenderizing the body will make the fight go quick since you are essentially buffing everyone else.
  • Golf swings and upswings will send other players flying, be mindful of them. Yes you do most of your damage to the head, but many players instinctively go for the head too. Don't send the greatsword user sailing off into the sunset because you wanted to upswing the head. Also, a Brace 3 deco will save you some trauma too.
  • Never build or use an elemental hammer, elementless out damages them in all situations.
  • Slopes are a hammer's 2nd best friend. While your hammer is powered up and you are charging, you can slide down a hill and do a neat spinning attack that does a lot of damage, and has a decent mounting chance since it's many separate attacks. You can also clutch claw in the middle of this attack.
  • Ledges are the 3rd best friend. If a monster makes the mistake of fighting near a ledge, you can spam the ledge hopping attack for a lot of damage, and usually a mount. Don't forget it has follow up combos when you land.
  • Skills to focus on: Critical eye, critical boost, Weakness exploit, elementless and flight. Don't put slugger in, it's not good, it only slightly lowers the KO threshold. I also recommend vitality and divine blessing since hammers tends to get hit a lot as they target the head.
  • Spinning bludgeon (where you maximum charge the hammer while running and then spin around for ages) is a bad move but it has some good combos when you cancel it, depending on how long you've swung it for. Keep in mind it's the only move you can't cancel by rolling, but you can stop by immediately hitting Y/Triangle to do a short side swing.

My God, really appreciate the time you took to type this whole thing out. Will try to apply these, thanks so much!

To tack more onto the hammer talk: there are times where hitting the head is too risky (on 3rd cart, perhaps) or just not possible due to height, rage mode, flight, whatever. In those times hitting other body parts isn't bad because blunt type damage has the added effect of building up the monster's fatigue and flinch meters too.
