So Iceborne is coming out on Thursday and I haven’t booted the game in months. Anything I should know? What weapons got the coolest new shit? I mostly did IG and GS, but dabbled in CH and GL.

Made it up to Guiding Lands and Yian Garuga on PC and it's been a pretty good time. I feel a little aimless now other than trying to get the two rath from Guiding Lands. Feels great to see Zinogre and Brach in HD, they seem huge compared to the older games.

Crown events are starting to trickle in.

on the 13th you get to do a crown event with Rajang, Yian garuga, and Nargacouga. Rajang is not needed for the achievement.

Also Yian garuga and Scarred Yian garuga are separate crowns. Scarred is just the tempered version of YG.

If you're crown hunting and not wanting to save scum 80 fights in a row, the current wisdom is to just focus in on the elder dragons and Scarred Yian garuga.

Since yian garuga is one of the secret monsters like Brute Tigrex, Gold Rath, and Silver Rath, more than likely all of those guys will be getting crown events.

Also the reward types dictate crown chance

2 purple rewards are no crown
3 and above purple rewards all have a crown chance
Any quest with all silver or silver and bronze is no crown
Any quest with more than 1 bronze is no crown
One exception is 1 bronze, 1 silver, and 1 gold which are are no crown
3-4 silver and 1 gold are crown chance
1 bronze and all gold are a crown chance
Any variation of a quest reward with 1 bronze and any make up of gold and silver together is a crown chance

You need the crowns of Lunestra and Original Deviljho for iceborne. Deviljho is easy on the PS4 since there's a high rank event with both. Lunestra can also get crown chances on High Rank quests and events. I got my Lunestra crowns from the arch tempered event and she's way easier to fight on high rank than at Master Rank since the one shot kills are given to more moves at MR.

Sleep Balloon, Viper Tobi, Ruiner, Scarred, Velk and Nami were all massive hassles to get crowns for. Even measuring them you're still going through dozens of investigations and silver crowns. The Guiding Lands ended up being a lifesaver, got the giant crowns for Velk, Nergi and Scarred by hunting them there after burning through all the investigations I had. Giant Balloon and mini Nami came from expeditions but the odds of actually getting anything useful from those are incredibly slim.

Even with crown events you're still gonna need the Elder dragons so I still wouldn't recommend actually wasting your time with it but if you must put on something in the background to watch to keep you sane from the mind-numbing tedium that is chasing monsters down and measuring them. I'd recommend just hunting most mons normally until you've acquired the mats to make all the armor and weapons you want since you'll most likely get at least one crown that way and if you've temp invests run through those since you can always use more decos.

And then of course I got the Monkey and Stiggy Zino crowns within the first 15-20 hunts without even sniping them because why not.

I didn't realize you could grind steam for decos, and now that all events are gone, I've basically lost all interest in playing MHW. I've made 3-4 full endgame builds with Rajang pieces and all, and I can't even remotely play them to half their power because of decos. I'm like 300 hours in, majorly being end-game World.

I get the "hunt to hunt to hunt" mentality but man is it not appealing. I've given lance a shot though and it's really fun, but knowing my hunts last 16 mins because I don't have critical boost or whatever is pretty disheartening. It's weird how much the game has going for it during events and how little afterwards. It was sheer luck I unlocked a bunch of event layers and items out of randomly doing them; unable to figure out which were new or old events.

Why isn't there a punching weapon like oversized gauntlets or something?

Also, just beat Velkhana, fuck that stabby piece of ice-encrusted shit.

I've heard about them. I just want to be able to shoryuken giant fire breathing dinosaurs.

So what is the likelihood of them releasing a 15th weapon?
Palico was the "15th weapon" in Generations and I'm still a little sad that it wasn't included in World. The last new weapon class added that's stuck around was the Charge Blade in MH4U.

It's been a little while since then but I would suspect that the Monster Hunter team is going to let World and MHXX fade out before trying to wedge a new weapon class in the roster.
I'd expect a new game before a new weapon.
Maybe the Medium Bowgun of MH3 fame will make a comeback, who knows?

Edit: Also consider that MH: Frontier fans are some of the worst in the series. They pitched a mighty shitfit when Hypnocatrice was added to MHFU in the then new G Rank. They really don't like it when Frontier content goes to the main games. People have wanted Espinas, Rukodiora, and the Orugarons in the main games for a long time but the devs remember the tantrum the Frontier players threw so they don't.

IIRC Tonfa were introduced and are exclusive to Frontier. I wouldn't expect them to be added to the main series.

Played 200 hours of World before getting a switch and MH:GU and dear god I can see why people prefer it. You can actually learn the movesets and rush down the boss. Worlds you got so many fucking variables you basically can't rely on effectively dodging monsters, and half the combat is ramming things into walls. You know what I want from combat? Actual combat. Not this tactical bullshit about putting dinos into walls.

That said, Rise doesn't look promising. The "invisible hook" mechanic looks terrible and I can't even tell if it's open world? But nonetheless, more classic MH which I can appreciate. I'd love if they finished MH:W with a singleplayer-only option two palicos and never be able to co-op with anyone. I keep being tempted into replaying it solo but I realize it's just not feasible. And not til Iceborne did they add those "second palico" allies that honestly suck dick.

How did you even get the impression Rise is going to be open world? They were open from its announcement that it will work like every single other MH game with a hub city and a variety of maps to visit. And if you didn't like World's combat you aren't going to like Rise since World set the standard for MH going forward. Rise will just swap out the clutch claw with wire bugs and some new moves using them and some new terrain traversal. Also if you think GU is "classic" MH you are horribly wrong. World was the main team and GU and Rise were the side team.

By the way World was already designed to be played solo. There are only like 4 monsters that were designed to be fought with a group and I've seen people solo at least some of them. The reason you only have one Palico is because of how potent the gadgets are and having two gadgets of your choice would be horribly overpowered. You only want two Palicos because GU has two but those are way weaker than World ones. Also tailriders were in the default game. The only difference in Iceborne was that you could earn a tool to call them to you instead of having to find them in the map.

You can solo both Xeno'jiiva and Shara Ishvalda with the proper loadout and Palico tool. I did.
It's possible to solo Safi'jiiva, Kulve Taroth, Alatreon, and Fatalis but most players aren't skilled enough to do so thus need another player or two to help out. Hell, most of those monsters only have 4 player scaling so solo hunting them is a very specialized endeavor.
To be honest you could consider Ruiner Nergigante the last "story boss" for Iceborne and that just needs the grind to MR100+; Safi, Alatreon, and Fatalis are unnecessary to get there. I consider those monsters "endgame" content that not every player will see.

I don't own a Switch so I can't talk about MHGU but I did play Generations on 3DS and it was very different from the games that preceded it. Sure the combat was similar and the animations intact but that was with Guild Style. Hunter Styles really changed things. I mained Adept and it played extremely differently than MH4U. I could easily take care of deviant Narga with Adept and got walloped constantly when using Guild.

Has anyone managed to kill Fatalis in MHW yet?

He has gotta be the most artificially difficult monster in the game. 60k HP solo, almost 200k in a team. He one shots or two shots you with most of his attacks. And you only get 30mins to do it.
