Well... he tried. By the end of R1 when it was clear that he wasn't on Yan's striking level, he started shooting his TDs, but Yan just stuffed them.

The thing about Merab is that his TD isn't all that great either, most of them get stuffed, but his trick is that he doesn't get tired, he can just keep going, eventually he breaks through.

But Merab is also a pressure wrestler, he needs to scrap and push people to the fence so he can TD and position hold, and for that he needs to trade.

Problem is, Yan was hurting Merab bad, he turned his face into paste and liver kicked him, The result was that Merab was hurting, and when your are hurting you don't have the same strength to wrestlefuck people.

I think Merab bought his own hype, he was a lot more defensive before, in a way he fought much like islam, staying out of range and always defending, but Merab thought he could just endure everything.

Turns out he can't.
 
Going into the fight I had a feeling Yan would get it, but dismissed it as the less likely outcome.

Turns out he did.

My itching suspicion came from improvements he made to his wrestling defense, including uppercut counters to the takedown. It also came from Merab's suspect chin, which had been a problem ever since the fight with Moraes.

That being said, the clips I've seen so far seem to confirm part of my observations. Others don't. I'd like to get my hands on more clips to see. But whatever the case, this is was the turnaround of the year, for sure.

I am a Merab fan and he defended his belt so much this year. What a guy

Edit: betted against him because he had a huge segment with Nina Drama and it paid off big

Real weird series they might have. Came out of his first fight with Merab thinking "this is a nigh unwinnable style matchup for you, too reactionary, can't get things going, just behind all the time". 50-45ed.

This one, expected it to be more competitive but more or less the same dynamic, instead thought Yan won every round, and am now coming out thinking "wow this version of Yan is a nigh unwinnable style matchup for you Merab".

Both having weird factors as well - injury for Yan the first time, Merab maybe extending himself too much with 4 title fights in a calendar year.
 
Yan cracked the code on Merab. Dude who has insane mobility? Beat the fuck out of his body. Merab has insane cardio and maneuverability, and if you take that away from him, you can piece him up. Watched the fight sober and Petr put on an absolute masterclass in bodywork. It was really good to see.

Iwo v Ibo was so entertaining

A lot of people have been saying for a while, but it seems the answer to the wrestlefuck menace is just plain old violence.

For a while fighters have been trying different methods, training sprawling techs, submission defence, and while that is great, it doesn't change the fact that a wrestler has a time and skill gap that won't be closed in a training camp.

It seems now that people are just accepting the fact that they won't stop being taken down, but instead of gameplay around range and avoiding TD, the solution is get on their faces and bring the hurt.

That is what Pereira did to Ank, who in their first fight was way too concerned about the counter punch and TD, on the rematch, Alex just marched, destroyed Ank's legs and dropped him with a hook.

That may be the thing, don't give wrestling guys any respect, just hurt them. Easier said than done, for sure, but that's seems to be the only working plan.

I suspect he would also beat Umar if he gets thrown in there.
O'Malley I think everyone is going to be testing that wrestling from now on. Even Song Yadong, who is a plodding power puncher can mix in the wrestling if he needs to (though again, the UFC have gifted O'Malley with a favourable style matchup in the form of a guy who can't cut the cage and needs to plant his feet to punch well).

I'm not a fan with O'Malley but I hope he KTFO of Yadong, that chink just got gifted a win via fucking eyepoking. It would've been a NC or even DQ if he wasn't a chink but Dana just love mogoloids too much.
