Minecraft is officially hitting the big screen on May 24, 2019.

Warner Bros. announced the release date for its adaptation of the hit game on Monday. The film, which is being directed by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney, will also be released in 3D and IMAX.

Mojang, the company behind the game, also revealed the release date in a statement on its website. “That might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?” it reads. “That’s it for now, but as time goes on we’ll share loads more. Loads!”

Not many details of McElhenney’s plans for the film are known, but when his involvement was announced last summer he posted a tweetsaying, “Hey Mojang let’s do something weird and wonderful.”

Minecraft first debuted in 2009. When it arrives in theaters, it will join the roster of recent game adaptations that also includes The Angry Birds Movie, Warcraft, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film, and a planned Fruit Ninja project.

>Fruit Ninja movie

Angry Birds was already one hell of a stretch, but what is there in Fruit Ninja- oh wait, money, nevermind.

I honestly thought Battleship and Angry Birds were stretching it. What's next, a "Don't Spill the Beans" movie? "Sorry"? "Scrabble"?
battleship should have just been a fictional naval battle movie, that's all the game is about
angry birds only had enough plot for a short and that's it
minecraft has no plot

inb4 the play doh movie is done in CGI

I sort of understand what the plot could be, it could be the "story" in minecraft that supposedly exists but is so difficult to find without a guide that most people just build stuff and never learn of it

I'm more curious as to why they're planning for it to be PG-13 I mean it's fucking minecraft what could they put in there

i don't even know how you can make a whole movie out of block diggems. even the telltale game existing surprises me.

I imagine they will try to mimick the lego movie, and make another kids film for "adults." I wonder how many more people will be sick of minecraft in 2019 when this trash hits the theaters.

Well it is 2016, and there's still a legion of people behind it. Sure it's not as big as it was, but people are still making lives as "Minecraft celebrities."

They ought to make a movie of Dwarf Fortress. It will be longer than Erich von Stroheim's director's cut of Greed and not a bit of it will make sense to anyone.

It'll pull another thing like the telltale game and feature some Minecraft youtubers, because putting youtubers in films always goes so well
