Interestingly enough there's a good amount of friction between the MMD community/modelers and the VRChat community. Many MMD modelers tend to flip shit when people use them in VRChat, not unlike other internet artists who tend to slap 4000 DO NOT STEEL messages over their art. A forum post on a VRChat related site also mentions that some modelers will actually send DMCAs to VRChat over people porting models. In particular if you look at the NicoVideo 3d model section you'll find a lot of models will have "do not use in VRChat" in the description (an example, just ctrl f the 3d section for VRChat and you'll find examples) and some linking to blog posts on why they feel that way.
I can't blame people for wanting to use MMD models with VRChat. Hell, I've even downloaded a few models specifically for that purpose. MMD modelers' strict rules regarding model usage are annoying, but I won't use a model in VRChat if the creator forbids it. Partly out of politeness, and partly because I don't want some random modeler going apeshit on me or other users for using that model.

This community...

Been a part of it since 2000's. It's gotten progressively bad... They have... rules. It can go as nuts as "You can't use my model If you're not in Japan/not Japanese" like what the fuck. Popular people even had a few people working for them, trying to make people to use the models within those... rules. Also, Japanese people had/have/will have those passwords that makes you feel like you're a contestant in Wheel of Fortune, but Japanese and It's 3 alphabets get in the way. I get it, they're making quality models without making anything from them but... That's not a way to do things, and more often than not, that's what spawns a ton of drama.
I think the rule regarding "don't use my model if you're not Japanese" relates to the language barrier. Japanese modelers who don't speak English won't be able to articulate their rules to an English-speaking audience. They can be really particular about who has access to use or even see their model, e.g. forbidding users from posting pictures/videos of that model to non-Japanese sites. As for why they're so particular about this, I'm not sure. Maybe it's a cultural difference?

To add something to this inactive thread.

It's a bit of a personal story from a buddy of mine who used to be in the MMD community.

there was this one MMD person (Let's call them uh Autisi) who made their own stylized assets through editing previous existing ones that were mostly ripped from the Sims 4 game or modding community directly. And that one buddy of mine drew a character with a few distinct features, hairstyle, or accessory that apparently existed as a trait on autisi's models too, note autisi still takes prefabricated stuff to make their "Original characters".

and yeah, autisi caught wind of the designs my buddy made and attacked my buddy who was a minor at the time they were 15 at the time, and autisi was at the end of their 20s but apparently, autisi did a whole ass witchhunt and slandered them just because of a stupid design trait that this one person had also on their designs which they mostly drew btw because they only used MMD to fuck around or make some sort of comics I guess. Autisi and that buddy were friends too so basically autisi ended a whole ass friendship over a stupid design trait that was not even that special, to begin with.

all of the witchhunt and drama apparently because Autisi was defensive about their characters which weren't even that special and had lame-ass basic designs.
