Metroidvania General - An overcrowded genre with recycled themes and muddled mechanics.

This is one of those games that look decent, with a lot of details in the environment which is nice, but it looks so busy that i can't see what's happening half of the time, maybe it's the color scheme but everything seems to blend together at times.

It's very messy, and to me it seems to be a lesson on how creating extremely detailed environments can make your game worse, rather than better.

They really do not.

I am sick of melee-based MVs and "souls-like" mechanics though. Where are the Axiom Verge (the first one) and Metroids knock-offs?
If you're talking about ranged metroidvanias I can't really think of many 'recent' ones outside of
  • Souldiers as the ranger class, but it's a very flawed game
  • Blade Chimera, but it's a very short and up until the secret true boss a very easy game
  • Guns of Fury, but it's a flawed game
  • Ghostsong, but it's a game I really disliked on account of leaning heavily towards the soulslike elements
Upcoming metroid knockoff Moadra(Release date: never ever) could be something that's up your alley, also Crowsworn(Release date: also never ever) could be interesting to you if you like the Hollow Knight artstyle which I do.

I don't think Blade Chimera will do it either, it's clearly still very sword focused.

There is a very good early-ish game grenade weapon that does wonders, but it's a rare drop.

There's always a gun balancing problem. Either they are too good, which defeats the point of melee much like real life, or they suck. There is no inbetween.

A good example of this is Mega Man ZX. Model X's X-Buster is so powerful it trivializes the supposedly hard optional superboss Omega. That's why they take it away from you early and put it behind beating the game with both characters.

I bought Ghostsong a while back and got filtered by that ogre with the gigantic flail. Worst part is, I got the save point behind him backwards and apparently that save point is the reward for beating him. The game's too grindy. I'll probably finish it eventually but I won't be doing repeat playthroughs.

I'm playing through Gal Guardians Servants of Darkness. It's nothing too special but I like the sprites, your abilities and your subweapons. I like how you can get all the collectibles just by going around the areas filling your map.

I just unlocked the last area so now I'm backtracking through all the previous areas to get the collectibles for the True Ending but they gave you basically the Metroid Shinespark so you can backtrack quickly but it also insta kills all the enemies from areas you've already explored which kinda makes the backtracking through previous areas suck since you no longer need to fight enemies with your weapons and subweapons just insta kill them with the Super Dash.
