The Big Boss clones weren't cloned for leading men. They were cloned because Big Boss was thought to be the perfect soldier and, in that sense, Solid and Liquid were both a success
I'm pretty sure Zero cloned them because he wanted his Figurehead to stay with the Patriots, and if he couldn't have the real deal, he'd have his literal Clones, Zero didn't care about sending them into battle fight nigga's, he wanted his own Cap'n America and by god he was deadset on it.

Philanthropy is funded by the Patriots
its stated that her book money went to starting it, now maybe the Patriots funded it after that, but still.
either way they were always a completely known quantity by the Patriots.

You'd think that if you were manufacturing an army of soldiers, you'd want them to be of average or somewhat lower intelligence. You don't want them questioning their mission and getting all philosophical about shit, just operate gun properly and clean your kit.
have you seen Dr. Clark/Paramedic? she's a fuckin retard who only wanted to do Dr. Frankenstein shit.
I'm so glad my Nigga Frank cut that bitch down.

He cloned Solid and Liquid because he wanted to use them as pawns against Big Boss, and because he wanted soldiers who were the equals of Big Boss. He cloned Solidus because he literally wanted another Big Boss

Solidus was cloned after Zero was put into the Comaland, he was the Patriots little slave the entire time.

Sometimes I have to just remind myself that Kojima always cared more about "the message" or "the theme" and a lot of the lore was just shit he was throwing at the page without thinking much of

Was that one of the retcons from MGSV? Because I generally ignore that

Well, yeah. Every new game retcons the previous one.

always the case, Solidus is significantly younger than Solid/Liquid, despite his appearance.
they put him to work quick, had him running child PMC shit, then off to be President, all likely because the Patriots are told to extoll Big Boss as part of their hardcoded shit, so they kept making him the face of shit.

He's younger but I don't think significantly. Keep in mind that he found and 'adopted' Raiden during the First Liberian Civil War, which began in 1989

Dr. Clark is a major cinephile.
This really highlights just how flawed the Cloning angle was from Zero, neither Liquid or Solid were anything like Big Boss, even Solidus wasn't close at all, all he cared about was Revenge against the Patriots for making him infertile and age fast, and for taking over America.
Liquid was just a rabid animal, in his youth he was deadset on killing John, and in his adulthood he adored him, and was then deadset on just being a violent nuisance to everyone he could think of.
meanwhile, David had zero of Big Bosses trait of wanting to lead men, and was a complete loner.
They were partially fuckin' around with Liquid and Solid; what happens when we try different parts of Big Boss?

Solid was useful because he was a functional Ultimate Soldier as far as sneaking around and killing dudes, but he didn't have that troublesome ambition that made Big Boss occasionally tell the Patriots to get lost, and have a whole army of dudes following him as he did it. Side effect: asocial, probably pretty depressed.

Liquid was also good at sneaking/murdering, but unfortunately (for the Patriots) the experiment did great at discovering Big Boss' "get a bunch of die-hard followers, earn their loyalty and follow your dreams" genes. That's not what you want in a puppet--you can still reverse-psychology and figure out how he's going to ricochet, but it's not full control.

Solidus cared about revenge because they raised him from birth to be a perfect copy of Big Boss, and that's got to be a lot of hands-on "no you can't play violin" etc. Solidus wasn't on the "soldiers need a purpose" train because that was BB's experience, so that was BB's cause. Solidus was working against the world being manipulated by the Patriots because that was his life.

aside: I enjoy sharing in this retardation but my friend, you gotta learn to multiquote

Nobody does retcons like Metal Gear though. They're generally accepted and their lore implications are discussed in depth.

The only retcons I really don't like are from MGSV, specifically everything regarding the parasites and Skullfaces role in MGS3. I prefer to think The End has weird photosyntehis powers because he just does, like every other boss in the game. My wife watched me playing once, I went on a tangent explaining all the different boss powers and she says "so you're basically fighting the X-Men?", and that stuck with me. Yes, I am.

IIRC they gave Solid the dominant genes and Liquid the recessive ones, which is what caused Liquid to be a seething pile of resentment by being given the "inferior" genes.

this is flipped in actuality Solid has the recessive, they just told him the opposite as a mindfuck and to see what would happen.

realistically, genes don't "work" like that, but lol it sounds good.

That's one of the things Kojima retconned straight off. Subsequent games make no reference to Liquid or Solid being 'dominant' or 'recessive', and I think in MGS4 Naomi simply says that Liquid and Solid are just different. Neither one a perfect match for Big Boss or each other. That's why FoxDie killed Liquid but not Snake.

In reality, whichever one was the 'recessive' one would have been more desirable, because your recessive traits are the ones less likely to get passed on to your natural offspring, unless the other parent also has the same recessive traits

A couple of sketches from MGS Flash Collab Disk 01, published on Newgrounds in 2008 (Link to the full collab, login required)(Some of these sketches are very NSFW).

There's a lot of stinkers in there but some of them are gold. It was a different time. "Metal Gear! I'm such a loser" said in an egregiously gay voice was an in-joke with some friends of mine for a long time.

There's a few recognisable names in there including Harry Partridge, Egoraptor and StamperTV.

Here is a censored version of most of the collab uploaded to YouTube, though it seems like some segments including Stamper's were omitted. This is no surprise as it featured full nudity as well as Para-Medic pissing on Snake's face, a foreshadowing of Stamper's gross batshittedness that is obvious today.

It always bugged me how when Otacon is explaining the Big Shell's true purpose he says, paraphrased, "Don't you think it's strange that they still haven't cleaned up the oil in two years?" I mean, not really? Given the size and complexity of the Big Shell, I'm impressed they even erected the thing inside two years, let alone done any cleanup. Another example of the S3 plan being really, really stupid if you think about it for five minutes.

Also, I wanted to find out how big the Big Shell actually is, and DuckDuckGo's AI gave me a funny answer:

The entire cast of MGS2 are ants, who knew?

I wanna know how the fuck they built Arsenal underwater and why they needed to hide it under a fake oil rig.
The Patriots were too clever for their own good. They wanted to put a stop to Snake's anti-Metal-Gear activism, steal the Marines' pet project AND create the S3 plan all at the same time. This culminated in a massively overblown, hugely wasteful project. Even Solidus pointed out the sheer resources and manpower it would take to operate Arsenal.
