I am completely baffled by the kid characters. Chico, Eli, that third child … Big Boss has child soldiers, that’s a thing in his world, but by the end of 5 it’s like the series is quietly endorsing child warfare? Chico was happy with Snake, and Eli’s evil for not accepting Snake’s help.

Also, we get so many young versions of major MGS1 characters, even a knockoff Sniper Wolf, but young David is nowhere. :stress:

Stop doing drugs. The story of portable ops is "hey remember psycho mantis now this person has psychic powers too, oh and like 5 other people too" and then you kill them all and that's the story. There's also a little side bit where they say Grey Fox isn't actually named Frank Jaeger but is called that because he killed french people or something. It's an awful story and it's gameplay is just snake eater in blocky maps.

There was a whole lord of the flies reference third chapter that got cut from the game due to Konami wanting to pursue pachinko and crap out a live service asset flip MGS game (survive) and basically just cutting the games development before it was 100% complete. A lot of the weird shit with mgs5 is likely due to the fact it's basically unfinished and will forever be unfinished.

As if pseudo-superpowers are unusual for the series and it didn't become even more crazy in PW and V. I thought it far less absurd than the bikini clad little girl piloting a metal gear more advanced than any of the future ones until V, and the lesbian romance causing the mech to skin walk as the Boss. Peace Walker was dumb. Still a great game but come on.

It has nothing to do with absurdity, it's unoriginal. Psycho-mantis was a popular moment so they just made 5 of him and basically nothing else. Every time a character announces they also have psychic powers my eyes just rolled at how blatantly uninspired it all was.

Fair, but my point isn’t even that Snake needed to be in 5, it’s that Liquid and his Fun Size FOXHOUND have no business being there. I could maybe chuckle at Eli popping up but when you had everyone from MGS1 hanging out in the past, that's the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. Just dumb.

why would he be, we know David's backstory and it doesn't involve running around with Big Boss till he already served a bit. and right after that is Metal Gear 1.

and yes, lol Big Boss has always endorsed Child Soldiers, he's a fucking VILLAIN my guy, always was, he lost any and all sensibilities by the halfway point of Peacewalker where he essentially renounces The Boss as a person.

while V is happening he's running around setting up Zanzibar land, which involved essentially taking over an entire South east Asian State and killing everyone in power there.

I mean this just isn't true, Big Boss is great, but Raiden's entire story in 2 is top notch as well, initially he's just the Players avatar and also the living critique of Solid Snake worship, the character is presented as this great fanboy of his and is handpicked by the Powers that Be to go through a complete recreation of Shadow Moses in the Big Shell Incident, but then the game peels back and reveals just how fucked up he really is, and how much control his masters, the Patriots have over him.

They outright tell Raiden, to his face, that he will fight and kill Solidus because they insured he would by utterly manipulating his entire life up to that point, and Solidus himself also tells him of it, and his plans.. and on cue he does it, by cutting down Solidus, he "proved" to the Patriots they could control everyone, insuring the entire experiment was a success.

Its a great story about control and free will, and the lack thereof, and ended on a brutal cliffhanger that wasn't resolved for many years, but for Raiden, he never really escapes the Patriots, he's forever their little killing machine, even if the Puppetmaster is dead.

eta: per the MGS1 novelization, Snavid spent his early years in a small town in Oregon. So if that's canon, imagine "Solid Snake Works at Taco Bell" except learning to pump his own gasoline.

While I think that Hayter shouldnt have been removed at all by that point (I think the chance to do so was back in MGS3 as it is indeed a stretch that David and John sound exactly the same). And despite his work with the character being rather short, Richard Doyle did great with what he was given (playing Big Boss as a regretful old man, speaking from the heart as his time on this world is coming to an end). As for Kiefer, I actually do not hate his voice work but he seriously needed more material to work with (nvm there is the confusing fact that Snake kept the same japanese VA from MGS 1 to 5 and yet it was changed for english?).

The "You are all diamonds" is powerful stuff that Kiefer does a good job with and it makes you wish we had more of that as Venom goes into long periods of time without talking, even when it would make sense for him to talk (nvm that Big Boss and Solid always had a lot to say and ask).

MGS5 just feels inconflict with itself and the series as a whole. Its not a bad game even at its worst but it feels like outside of gameplay, the game doesnt stand out in terms of plot and characters much.

The funny thing is, its implied that Big Boss was off playing out the backstories mentioned by Gray Fox, Naomi and Sniper Wolf. It would have been neat to see these three and foreshadowing what they've become.

The funnier thing is that something I have noticed is people hating Kaz for not being ok with child soldiers, sort of simplifying it as "Kaz doesnt like children" when the cutscene where that started has him saying "There are no place for angels in our Outer Heaven", implying the angels are children and that this was no place for them.

its kind of fucked up, really lol. Big Boss is so charismatic he is able to make THE FANBASE start to unironically nod at the prospect of child soldiers. Its not at the level of Walter White fanboys unironically defending cooking meth but still...

MGS2 was my first Metal Gear, so I’ve got blind, cult-like devotion... if you’re willing to mentally redact several scenes like the Epstein list.

I don’t care about that Romanian fruit or Otacon banging his stepmom (then you pile on his stepsister acting like his ex-girlfriend and suddenly I feel like I stumbled into some Japanese incest RP. Are they daring me to turn this off?)

But I like Raiden. He starts out trying to cosplay as Snake, and ends up cutting “FOXHOUND” loose and becoming his own man with a sword. They knew there was no topping MGS1, so they took a side-step.
