I finally got around to playing Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain recently, and it really bummed me out. I knew that Venom Snake is actually Big Boss, but a lot of the other details I never got spoiled on. How the game's development was all fucked up and it's basically incomplete, the jarring ending, how Eli's story never gets resolved unless you watch a bonus DVD, how David Hayter got replaced for no real reason. Such a sour note to end the franchise on, and it just kind of made me sad.
The gameplay is great, but the story is an absolute mess, it is a shame that's the note it ended on.

I had hoped it would be the Metal Gear equivalent of Symphony of The Night, breathing new life into the series and we would actually get a MGS6, 7 etc.

I don't think David Hayter got replaced for no reasons, he got replaced because the main character isn't the character that he voiced...
The trouble is that Kiefer was miscast, they should have cast Richard Doyle or someone that sounded more like older Big Boss.

No you see Ground Zeroes are the false memories that are implanted to you to make you believe you are Big Boss or something. My dick is actually Metal Gear. Now if you'll excuse me I need to make a video games about Norman Reedus being a postman delivering babies or some shit" - Hideo Kojima
BIDEO KOJIMER

Kojima seems to have a horror-boner for biomorts if you also consider Policenauts. (There might have been another example I'm forgetting.)

I seem to recall that Japan was late to come to a legal definition of braindeath (in the context of organ donation) for cultural reasons that supported the "warm and breathing = life, duh" viewpoint, and the late 1980s-1990s were when this was discussed in Japanese news/society as transplantation became more feasible as well. (I think you can still elect, in Japan, whether you want to be an organ donor at brain death or at cardiac death only. Not a bioethicist or a weeb, though.)

Mechanical undeath at the mercy of bureaucracy is objectively pretty creepy, but that'd put it on a creator's mind while he was building his near-future dystopias.

When Raiden beat him in MGS2, he didn't technically die? He was left brain dead and his body was kept on life support? Mama just crème brûléed him and Liquid so she could reconstruct Big Boss?
You know, something just occurred to me reading this: why did Eva decide to dedicate her entire life to Big Boss? Didn't they know each other for like a week? They spent barely any time together during that week and BB acts like an awkward doofus whenever she's in the same room. Hell, I'm pretty sure he spent more time with Ocelot.

I really want to know now what BB said or did that made Eva think, "I want to spend the rest of my life with this man and have his babies."

They all hung out together (plus Zero) for years when they were the Patriots, so it was either that something happened then, or Eva really made a promise to The Boss.

She didn't get to spend her life with him, though, because she (and Zero) whoops'd Big Boss with the clones; dude was not down.

The baby she threw on a bonfire, got it.
Eva only incubated Liquid and Solid. Nobody loves Solidus Snake.
And what was Mama's plan in case someone noticed the wrong eye was missing?
Unzip her shirt a little bit more, I think.

I wonder: if they were rehabbing Big Boss with the extra pieces from his dead clones, how come they didn't plug Solidus' undamaged eyeball into BB so he could apologize to Solid with good depth perception?

I mean, if they're doing this part of the endgame out of Ocelot's decades-long thirst for BB, and using Ocelot's stolen half (fourth?) of the Philosophers' Legacy, you gotta assume Ocelot wants to say sorry about his eyeball mess-up, all those years back.

Oh, yeah. Good point. Solid really was the favorite child.

To be fair, Solidus losing an eye and Solidus "dying" were hours apart. The only people who saw him with one eye were either killed by Raiden or probably killed when Arsenal smashed into Manhattan. I guess the witnesses weren't that close either?

I'm more interested to know how BB is walking around and fully cognizant after fifteen years in a coma. How long passed between Act 5 and the graveyard scene? Meryl and Johnny had long enough to plan a wedding so I guess a little time had passed. I know Venom was in a coma for nine but it's still silly.

Come to think of it, I just remembered an old comic I saw like a decade ago. It had Les Enfants Terribles as actual children and BB as an overwrought and incredibly strict father. I'll have to see if I can dig it up; I found it kinda funny at the time. Anyone know the one I mean?

Are you thinking of hiimdaisy?

She has pretty much has disowned it (fans quoting shitty memes over and over), but there are comic dubs on youtube.

My experience with Metal Gear is that you need to take that little piece of you that says COMAS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY and just put it over to one side.

I mean, there's a gun with infinite ammo because the magazine is shaped like a möbius strip; that doesn't bother me as much because I'm not a gun person.

(Venom wasn't truly comatose, just variably sedated for almost a decade while he got his mind messed with. Big Boss was the one in an actual coma.)

I think the oldest one is the one on DeviantArt:

I can't keep up with these time-skips.:stress:

At least the gothy synth is good.

It keeps you wondering... Jacob's Ladder is rich in clues about what is happening to Jacob. Ishmael has been watching over Venom for 9 years, but he's bandaged still? The hospital is raided just as Venom wakes from his coma? Part of his mind is literally missing. Can we really believe Cipher is out to get him, or is he hallucinating?

I guess the truth isn't out there. Phantom Pain pretty much straight-forwardly says that Venom is another son of Big Boss (albeit not birthed by EVA). The amnesia plot is okay, but it's spread much too thinly.

We see a lot of the cutscenes repeat with elements changed in them, so I figured Venom was not supposed to be a reliable narrator, and the player realizing that was supposed to be part of the mindfuck. The character customization that leads to just looking like BB ends up having been a fever dream of his own face, and then BB is wearing bandages. At first you think it's connected, but it's more likely Venom's frantic confabulation, plus "hey Boss, do something about your face so he doesn't bluescreen" / "OK, OSP engage, here's some bandages lol."

No reason to wake the tranq'd meat puppet up until after the asset gets up on his own.

Poor dude's been MKULTRA'd for nine years, plus he's got helicopter sticking out of his head. Venom Snake is having a rough time with his personal issues and yet he still has to go to work and put in a full day of CQC-ing dudes. Maybe the game is really all about how major corporations provide shitty EAP for their employees.

akchually the first Mother Base was originally a research station studying ocean thermal energy; Mother Base East was an old oil rig. It's weird that the first one wasn't an oil rig, so maybe the failure of an optimistic attempt at non-petrochemical energy vs. embracing the refuse of Industry was a ~theme~

--or maybe Kojima saw a magazine article with cool pictures around the time of Peace Walker and decided to run with the research station idea.

Always thought it was super uncreative of Kojima to basically do Big Shell THREE FUCKING TIMES

Because Kojima.

(although, wasn't it implied that he saved her from China or something? After Kojima retconned Portable Ops I mean)
