Got 8 episodes in before I found out I'm supposed to watch a movie/special called "Mazinger Z vs Ankoku Daishogun" first before moving on to Great.
Despite several pirate sites listing it, they're all dead files. Fucking typical.

EDIT: Watched it. Man were the subs terrible.
The movie is optional. The final episode of Z does actually bridge straight to Great and the movie is just a retelling of it, albeit considerably better since it takes it's time and isn't just Mazinger Z jobbing to some randos.

Also you haven't seen subtitles that are truly ass until you've watched Space Battleship Yamato III.

Tale of Neo Byston Well only has crabsticks.
That still doesn't say much, because the subs for Yamato III from what I can tell are a really sloppy attempt at scrubbing crabsticks and consequently end up being more confusing, because they not only got the names wrong, but they fixed it about halfway into the series because they realized the names they were using weren't working...and then never bothered fixing the first half to correspond to the new ones.

I know it sounds backwards, but I think actual crabsticks would've been preferable to whatever the hell is going on in Yamato III.

Not to mention because the subs appear to be ok at a glance, no fansub group even wants to bother making new ones because they're not bad enough.

Also they're burnt into the video stream because of course they fucking are.

there's times Japan gets their subs (or attempts thereof) on the release, like a million years ago that was the subs on Robotech Perfect Collection on VHS, and less anciently the REALLY shit Zeta TV DVD subs from the first set

Watched all of Getter Robo, now 23 episodes into Getter Robo G. The show gets considerably better in G now that it looks like Toei is actually putting a little bit more manpower into the production, and it helps how Benkei is a really fun character and one of the main antagonists is Hitler with bull horns.

Gun x Sword was such a fun show. It had its flaws (weird sex stuff but to be fair a penchant for sexual assault ought to be expected from the founding population of a planet that's space Australia, and agonizing character "quirks") but I love the mechs. Storywise I appreciate the uncommon thematic high concept that living for vengeance and for your own wellbeing is cool, actually, and that radical utilitarian altruism is a facade for cultlike control freaks who think they know better than everyone else.

You forgot that a man saving himself for his One True Love in marriage is based as fuck and doesn't make him any less manly for turning down every skirt that throws herself at him.

Van is a Chad. Nigga didnt fell for the villain speech and just sliced the villain and fucked off. That whole scene was brilliant and having the mech stare inside like that was awesome.

Man, they don't make shows like Gun x Sword anymore. Taniguchi is one of my favorite directors, regardless of Code Geass being shit. On the bright side, Back Arrow felt similar to Gun x Sword, but it felt more Xenogears to a degree and I ate it up.

I liked back arrow but that ending was crazy for me. Did enjoy the massive combination sequence near the end of the serie where they made the comedic character peak like no one else in that serie.

Would be cool to add Back Arrow to Super Robot Wars.

I want Back Arrow, 86 and Fafner (Beyond/ Exodus) in the next SRW but that's never gonna happen. At least they put Godzilla in Y to compensate for putting G-Witch in.

Watching Vifam thanks to @XYZpdq Jr. reccing it earlier in this thread. Requisite apologies for still being on the topic of Tomino.
10 episodes in, and man, this feels like it's actually managing to be the kind of show Zambot, Ideon, F91 and possibly Garzey's Wing wanted to be about, but without any of the usual issues the drama-heavy Tomino shows tended to suffer from in writing people as human beings instead of interchangeable warm bodies. A bunch of variably-sized kids trapped in a war they want no part of who can barely use any of their machinery or weapons, an enemy whose motives and identities are clouded by total absence in communication rather than just being dispassionate destroyers or fucking space samurai, and any hopes of relief are getting mulched in the background rather than being made malicious by circumstance. Plenty of terror and tension to go around, but without the show being all doom and gloom, and I'm liking it.
