In light of Erdogan's recent activities, busting his balls (to put it mildly) should be something every nation ought to strive for.

It is that sort of thing, which is exactly why we aren't going to step up and lead the way. Much better to just sit on our hands and let some asshole fuck over his people because he has something we want (military bases in the neighborhood; territory abreast of Russia, ME; etc.). Way better than upholding our stated principles and beliefs--by a mile.

Hillary has already said that her policy with regard to Turkey will be more of the same--simple enablement.

Sadly Turkey is just too important to NATO for anyone to fuck around with them. If they left NATO and sided with Russia it would change the dynamic of all of Europe.

There is a small reason the US might not be so terribly worried at the thought of the departure (or expulsion) of Turkey from NATO on some level do to the problematic relationship between Turkey and Israel.

Theoretically, if Israel and Turkey's relationship deteriorated to such an extent that Turkey invoked Article V of NATO's governing treaty, the United States would be in a very difficult situation. Article V obligates NATO members to recognize an attack on one member nation as an attack made against all member nations. If Israel bombed Turkey and Turkey invoked Article V, the US would be sandwiched between its commitments to its NATO allies and relationship with Israel, which the US has been cozy with for decades.

Turkish departure/explusion from NATO would prevent this situation from ever being a chance. Nevertheless, I imagine you're probably right that the US wants to have all of its cake even at the expense of the locals due the relative unlikelihood (for the moment) of a Turkish-Israeli conflict of some sort.

Unless Erdogan is successfully impeached by parliament, loses reelection in 2019, or new fed-up people within his circle attempt to sack him are successful, he has until 2024 per term limit to fuck everything up in the only Westernized Muslim country in the world, and clear a path for a Sunni Iran. Until then, he will continue receiving support from bumfuck mongoloid Turkmen, taking Arab mafia money, constructing his pet projects, cutting down the internet, shutting down newspapers, and sticking his name everywhere, all not to return to Ottoman days, rather replace it with his "legacy."

ISIS was part of Al Qaeda, but it isn't an evolution of Al Qaeda. Al Nusra is Al Qaeda.
That theory hasn't worked well so far. The US keeps on accidentally arming terrorists.
Assisting Kurds and backing them up with air strikes has been successful.

ISIS started as AQI during the occupation. They only split from Al Qaeda proper in the past few years. A major mistake people make about Al Qaeda itself (and ISIS for that matter) is that people assume it's some sort of Hydra-esque multinational organization that's totally under the control of some small cadre of masterminds. In reality it's just a brand name. The guys hiding in caves in Afghanistan were its ideological guiding force but other than that did not really control anything. By the end of the war AQI had basically stopped giving a shit about that brand's PR, scooped up some former Iraqi generals in American prisons, and by the time the Arab spring rolled around they were ready to take advantage of it. In the meantime the differences between them and Al Qaeda proper had reached a breaking point and they started shooting at each other.

Moral of the story here is don't fuck with the middle east, because the middle east will fuck with you even harder
