While I myself wouldn't go that far, I do enjoy reading /r/wallstreetbets from time to time, and I think Shkreli has pulled some clever stuff, like the art show he did with Milo.

People love to paint him as some kind of villain, but hey, if we can't laugh at and exploit AIDS victims dying of of parasitic infection due to needlessly hyper-inflated drug prices, who can we laugh at and exploit?

Ever since her infamously disastrous appearance on Tucker Carlson's show, pro-Trump alt-rightists have been nonstop spamming her Twitter and social media with personalized memes and jokes. Shkreli is just the most notable person to indulge in the practice. And Lauren keeps stoking the flames by regularly responding to the trolls, it's like the Leslie Jones Twitter slapfight all over again
 
On one hand Shkreli is a fucking horrible human being, on the other it's hilarious seeing people like 'diversity Eric' arguing with him, it's sorta like live Jerry Springer with rich people.

One thing leaps out of that image immediately.

Genius Martin Shkreli is smugly posing at a chessboard to make sure everyone knows that he is a Giant Brain.

One problem. The board is set up incorrectly.

Notice how the farthest square on black's home row is a dark square? It should be white. At the very least, setting up the board in this manner puts all the bishops on the wrong colors. If he follows the "Queen on Color" mnemonic (after ignoring "White to the Right" when setting up the board), the kings and queens will also start the game on the wrong squares -- and based on the position of white's castled king, it looks like that is exactly what he did.

When you don't know how to set up a chessboard, it's a bad idea to use one as a prop. What a buffoon.

EDIT TO ADD: Never mind. The frame grab that displays before the video starts is flopped. If you look closely, you can see that the lettering on the T-shirt is a mirror-image, and in the actual footage, the position of the guitar is the opposite of what's in the frame grab. How the hell does that happen?

Yep, there are two bishops and they're arranged symmetrically, so it'd be impossible to arrange them incorrectly short of misplacing them at spots where they don't belong.

If the board is set up with a black square as the last square to the players' right on their home rows, the bishop to the right of the king and queen will be on a black square instead of a white one. And the bishop to the left of the king and queen will be on a white square. Both are starting the game on squares of the incorrect color.

But you're right. The frame grab that displays before the video starts is flopped. How the hell did that happen?

Also, it seems that, if it's Black to move, Qxe1++. If it's white to move, Rxa1 and Black is down a queen for nothing. Terrible position.

He has the money, the time, why shouldn't he indulge himself in petty squabbles? It may mark him as a shithead, but if he doesn't care about being ostracized by the good peoples of the world, and instead he seeks validation with teh troolz, what's to stop him? Salute, Mr. Shkreli, the world needs a couple of rich people doing it for the lulz.
 
It'd be nice to think this was Shkreli going full tinfoil hat on us, but from the rest of the thread he comes off as a bit too clever for that. I'm sure this is just more trolling/publicity seeking.

It's actually pretty short-sighted, because the one thing you don't particularly want to be, if your career requires persuading people to make questionable investment decisions, is a well-known or controversial figure. One of the reasons Bernie Madoff got away with it for decades was that he wasn't that well-known outside Wall Street or people wanting to invest there. It's the same reason that the best-known gangsters are usually the ones that end up dead or in jail the first.
